A Dog's Dilemma Petsitting A Dog's Dilemma offers pet sitting and a variety of other pet care services in CT. Even worse were the countless stories of abuse and neglect. An animal lover.
(57)

I’ve always been an animal lover but, when I moved to Newington, CT in 2011, I decided it was time to actually get involved. As I researched local shelters, I became deeply saddened over just how many animals were homeless. Being a pet mom to seven dogs and four cats (yes, that's 11 pets!), I felt a deep desire to get out there and make a difference in any way I possibly could. So I began to volun

teer for an organization called Dog Days, which hosted a variety of amazing adoption events. Feeling inspired through my work at Dog Days, I kicked up my search for even more volunteer opportunities. A DOG NAMED GEORGE

One day, through a friend’s Facebook post, I read about a dog who lived his long days and nights outside. I placed numerous calls to the Animal Control Officer of the town he was in until something was done to help this forgotten pup. Eventually he was taken into safety by the Wallingford Animal Control. An American Bulldog Mix by the name of George … this little guy stole my heart. During his time at the shelter, we developed a very special connection … and I made it my mission to find him a home! When the day finally came, I was overjoyed and knew that I wanted to take on a more personal role in the lives of the animals I helped. I deeply enjoyed my time at the shelter … it felt like home. I eventually began assisting with their page and even took the lead on performing home visits to ensure each animal was placed in a safe and caring environment. Sadly, George is no longer with us … but his memory is a constant reminder that my work is never done. THE NEXT CHAPTER

After my Dachshund, Daisy, was diagnosed with cancer I decided to explore the field of veterinary medicine. I enrolled in a five month course at Middlesex Community College and participated in rotations at Pieper Memorial in Middletown. It was during this time, I received more devastating news … another one of my beloved Doxies, Bandit, had developed cancer. After completing my coursework to become a Certified Vet Assistant, I put any further aspirations on hold in order to spend as much time as possible with them during the final months of their lives. The grief and heartache I felt over losing my pets was indescribable. However, it helped me validate a purpose I always knew I had … to love, cherish, and save innocent animals. A DOG'S DILEMMA

A Dog’s Dilemma encompasses everything I am at heart. A helper. An extremely hard worker. And a trustworthy friend. Whether it’s taking your dog for a long walk while you’re at work or making sure your cat gets TLC while you go away for a long weekend, I will take the absolute best care of your pet(s) at the times when you can’t. If you’re in need of in-home pet care, I’d love to chat. Because taking a trip or working an extra long shift should not have to create a dilemma.

THE BIGGEST MISTAKE THAT PEOPLE MAKE WITH RECENTLY REHOMED DOGS…

Is showering them with “love.”

That’s right. The biggest mistake that people (adopters, fosters, shelter/rescue staff, etc) make with recently rehomed or rescued dogs, is giving them an abundance of (inappropriate) physical love and attention.

Why?

1. The physical displays that humans give when offering “love and affection” include behaviors such as kissing them on the face, leaning over them, hugging them, excessive prolonged petting, and constantly interacting with them. These behaviors are all naturally threatening to a lot dogs, or at best, annoying, particularly when the dog is interacting with someone new to them. What we think of as “love” is often seen as discomfort from the eyes of a newly rehomed or rescued dog. This can sadly push the dog to displaying aggression in defense of the perceived threats.

2. The dog’s entire world just turned upside down. They are removed from EVERYTHING familiar to them. They are stressed. Studies have shown that stress levels in dogs from big events (such as relocating) can take up to three days to even begin to start to decrease. Add to that all of the excessive interaction and you’re preventing the dog from being able to relax.

3. Some dogs don’t know what it’s like to have a ton of attention and interaction. Lots of dogs sadly grew up neglected or living outdoors, etc. Therefore an over abundance of attention stresses them out because it’s not normal to them and they don’t know how to respond. They never had the chance to grow up developing positive associations with it.

4. Giving more than the average amount of time and attention to the dog in the beginning sets a precedent for later. At some point, the dog will get less attention when they’re no longer brand new, when the owner goes back to work, and when life just carries on in general. This can harm the dog later by predisposing them to developing separation anxiety type behaviors.

5. Decompression, i.e. time to chill out, rest, and recover is way more important than an overload of attention. Giving the dog some space while implementing predictable routines will help stress levels decrease faster and allow for better integration. Those are things the dog can really understand and appreciate.

There will be plenty of time to bond with the dog without being excessive in the amount of attention you give. Show them love and build trust appropriately and in a long lasting way via daily care, training, and overall time spent together. THAT’s the kind of love you want to shower them with.

With fireworks starting in some towns I am already seeing posts of lost dogs!

For some reason people insist on taking their pets to firework displays! There is no need!!!!
Most pups don't like them and would rather be safe at home...
so let's go over this again:
(some tips so your pups have a safe Sunmer)

1. Please leave your dogs home during a fireworks display.
You never know when your dog will get spooked and take off.

2. DO NOT for any reason leave your dog in a car during the summer months. I don't care if your window is cracked and you are parked in the shade.
Leave your dog at home!

3. If the pavement is too hot for the palm of your hand, imagine what that feels like on your pups feet? Take them for walks in the early morning or late evening once the sun has gone down and the pavement has had a chance to cool!

4. For the love of god - stop leaving your pets outside for hours on a hot and humid day without protection from the heat and water to drink! Limit their time outside to short periods.
3 dogs died last year (that I know of) because of this!

5. Make sure your pets have a name tag with your current number on it!
Make sure they are registered with your town and have them microchipped as well.
These are the best ways a good samaritan, an Animal Control Officer, a Police Officer or a Veterinarian can make sure your pup finds its way home to you!!

Rant over ...

Let's talk about this photo. It's cute, except it's not. I see a dog who cannot get up without telling the child to get off. How do you think a dog is going to do that?

The 7 Golden Toddler Dog Rules:
#1: If a dog walks away from you, you DO NOT FOLLOW.
#2: Always leave room for the dog to walk away from you.
---that right there is 90+% of dog bites eliminated---
#3: We do not climb on the dog.
#4: We do not grab or pull on the dog.
#5: We do not hit or throw anything at the dog.
#6: We do not touch the dog's food.
#7: We do not go into the dog's kennel.

I promise these are not overly difficult concepts for littles, nor will they rob a kid of their bond with the family dog. It will deepen that bond, while keeping everyone safe.

"Oh, it looks like Moose is walking away from you. She is saying she wants a break. Let's play with this instead!"

"It's Moose's dinner time! Let's give her space to enjoy her yummies."

"That is Moose's room(kennel) and only she is allowed to go in there."

"If Moose wanted a break, could she walk away from you right now? No she really couldn't. Let's move away from the play house. You can keep playing but now she can leave when she wants a break."

In conclusion, ***parent your child or your dog will do it for you, and you will not like how they do it.***

“I walked around your garden, there was a lot of food scattered around for the birds, a lot more than they could eat. I was really hungry and thought maybe I'll eat something. " "
I came back the next day and again the next day; you kept putting so much food out for me.

Then you notice me
"What a disgusting, filthy mouse!" ” I heard you say. Then I saw another man coming with black boxes.
I heard you said I carry many dangers if you don't kill me I carry many diseases.
Truth is i would never hurt you.
Think about it: how many people do you know who got sick from me?

I took food out of these boxes but it was poisonous. I didn't know and ate it.
Feeling really sick right now stomach hurts The pain is getting worse, it's unbearable, I feel like dying. Who's looking after my puppies now? They are still young, they will slowly starve, cry and wonder where their mom and dad are.

After several days of immense agony, I died.
I heard you say someone poisoned the cat and how cruel that was. But u poisoned me too Is my life less important just because I'm smaller and different?
I'm nobody's pet, but I also feel pain, I also suffer, I also fear... So why do you think poison is right for me?

You know your actions don't only concern me, Mr. Owl caught my little brother poisoned him and fed him to his little ones.
Now everyone is slowly dying because of you. Do they also deserve to die?

The man in the black boxes says I must die but he makes money killing my kind. How honest can it be in your opinion?

Think about it now what will happen?
I'm gone, y'all keep putting food out, my friends come over and it all starts again. What has changed ?

"Smaller animals" you define us without realizing we are creatures just like you. We respect you and we don't hurt you, why do you hate us so much?”
