It's #ThrowbackThursday and what better way to #Throwback than to see a video of 12 year old tiny Tina throwing down with a 4.5 month old Zuri from August 2022. Tina was Zuri's first adult friend, and she loves her dearly to this day. Tina has never acted like the tiny old lady she is, and Zuri is surprisingly gentle with her ❤️

New friends 🧡
Barkley and Perry just met, and it took several minutes for them to get the measure of one another. They are both so fun-loving and goofy, they quickly became partners in play 😊

Dogs react to today's snack: celery with cheese whiz!
Update: after all the cheese was eaten, the dogs continued to work on the celery in short increments, until eventually it was gone!

All these dogs have done some service dog training with us! One of the poodles, Felix, is slated to go into an adoptive home to finish his training alongside his new person, who is a veteran. Marlow Grace lives with a family, where she has the opportunity to use her training to help with day-to-day life. Picasso (another one of the poodles) is in a short-term foster to help build his comfort and ability to work while living in a home. He and his brother Perry have awesome public access skills, but are less experienced with life in a home. Perry is ready to level up his training for specific tasks outside the home. Zuri (the yellow lab) was washed from service dog work because of her high drive and energy, and is training for detection work.
These dogs are all fantastic companions, and make great family pets as well as being working dogs! We work hard to make sure the tasks they are being asked to perform suit the skills and aptitude of each dog. Not only do the dogs need to be strong and comfortable with the job they are being asked to do, they also need to enjoy being dogs. Dog training is never a one-size-fits-all formula, and part of our work is to know what tasks and situations best suit both the dogs and their people, so that both ends of the leash can flourish 🙂

Who enjoys Friday playgroups more, Windy or the dogs? It looks like a toss up to us!

Do you think Rupert will notice Marlow Grace exchanging a tennis ball for the much-coveted squeaky ball?
It's tough to focus on cleaning the training center with this kind of help!

It's snack time for our Academy Drop Off Day Training students. Today's snack is carrot dipped in peanut butter!
Here's how they reacted 😋
Barkley (the bigger dog) is super expressive here, coaxing Joey to interact with him. He is learning to play gently with smaller dogs, and he's figured out that the best way to do this is not to actually touch Joey. Rather, he moves all around him and gets silly!
This is a nice progression from earlier in the day when little Joey was having to regularly demand a little bubble of space from Barkley's high contact antics. Now Joey is approaching his bigger friend in an interaction he's more comfortable with.
Learning to play appropriately is important! Nuancing play skills to match their play partner makes play more fun for both parties, and can help prevent misunderstandings. We're pleased to see Barkley learning new ways to play that includes reading the other dog's signals.
