Hello pet friends, I came across this pet health alert on the Nextdoor platform. A lot of our furry friends love to play in the water. However, there are toxins and algae that can harm them. Apparently, this was posted in early July. I didn't get a notification or I would have shared sooner. Enjoy the rest of summer.
PET HEALTH ALERT UPDATE (8/20/24): The Maryland Department of the Environment, Maryland Department of Health, and Natural Resources advise the public that algae mats detected in the Potomac River at the North Branch in two locations - at Cumberland and the area from below Williamsport to Riley's Lock - could be harmful to animals when ingested. Pet owners are advised to keep their animals out of the water in this area until further notice. The algae has the appearance of mats of fine, green cotton and can be found along the shoreline, attached to rocks or plants, on the bottom or floating downstream.
Monitoring will continue and the public will be advised when conditions improve. More information on protecting you pet is available at cdc.gov/harmful-algal-blooms/prevention/preventing-pet-and-livestock-illnesses.html
