KIDDING and LAMBING PREP!

1) have you checked inner eyelid color and body condition scores of your does and ewes? Run f***l egg counts as needed, check for diarrhea, and deworm (with a safe product) only as needed? Proper dose and administration?
2) make groups based on body condition scores and nutritional needs, avoiding unnecessary competition and stress?
3) emergency birthing kit prepared? Missing any supplies? Thermometers, lamb / kid coats, gloves, l**e at least
4) do you know when to call for help? The 30 minute rule for progress / helping a kid or lamb be born! Timely intervention is 💯 🔑

PRELAMBING / PREKIDDING vaccines is a must ! 30-45 days before birth! Timing is everything ‼️

Monitor for KETOSIS- subclinical and clinical. Know how to best prevent pregnancy toxemia! Do you have ideal protocols in place?

Make this year the best one yet! 🐑 🐐

Yearly reminder! 🦕 🦖 💉 🚨
We know animals sometimes require emergency care ‼️ You never know when, it’s a fact of life and unpredictable 🎱

Make sure you have a veterinarian you use for routine care. A NON-EMERGENCY once or twice a year visit for your animals is important and necessary. Wellness exams, herd check, pregnancy checks, protocol discussion, nutrition consult, dental checks, f***l checks, vaccinations, drug cabinet management, first aid prevention check lists, facility upgrades / design strategy, help with problem solving 🔍……. If you don’t do a once or twice a year routine visit, your animals are not current on their routine care, and you may not be able to get a veterinarian out to your farm in case of emergency….. unless you’re extremely lucky! 🍀 Establish and maintain a VCPR (vet client patient relationship- necessary to approve prescriptions too!). If you’re not current (one year is a good guideline), this is a reminder to get on schedule!

Twisted Uterus in a dairy cow! A pretty common occurrence / reason a cow may have trouble calving. The uterus twists on top of itself (for an unknown unlucky reason in late gestation) and prevents the calf from simply exiting through the dilated cervix when it’s time. In this case, the cow had to be rolled with a plank on her flank to hold the uterus in place and twist the cow around the calf to align / flip the calf in the birth canal - super simple! 🍀 and lucky when the procedure only involves one roll of the cow. 🤞 🐄

Pics in order:
-casting rope around cow to help her lay down on the proper side (clockwise twist, right side down)
-cow lays flat and plank placed on flank just in front of udder
-large calf delivered right after untwisting the uterus (first sign after properly untwisting = the water breaks!)
-calf already standing up within minutes of birth

FYI Changes to official cattle identification are being implemented November 2024. RFID official button tags are required - no USDA metal tags should be applied anymore. Ask your vet if you need order forms for official ID tags!

Learn more here:
https://agriculture.ny.gov/animals/cattle-bison-other-bovidae

Some examples of cattle that require official identification: cattle going to a livestock
dealer or through a market, cattle moving out of state on a health certificate, cattle coming to a New York farm, all animals traveling to a New York sponsored fair. Please note that this includes all young calves that arrive at markets for sale as feeders (which currently are receiving little metal tags at markets). All cattle (including dairy, beef, heifers, and steers) that already have a NUES tag or another grandfathered form of official ID in their ear by November 5, 2024, will be considered officially tagged for life. These cattle will not require an RFID-capable 840 tag applied. You can choose to add an 840 RFID tag to them, but it is not required.

🌾🐄 **Bloat in Ruminants: Heads-Up!** 🐑🌾

Bloat can be a serious issue for our ruminant friends! Whether it’s from lush pasture or certain feeds, keep an eye out for signs like a swollen left side, difficulty breathing, or mouth/nose froth / an off feed animal. Early detection is key! If you suspect bloat, don’t wait—contact your vet ASAP. Do not stick a needle in your animal without veterinary direction…… ⚠️ . With timely treatment, your animals can bounce back quickly and stay healthy. Stay vigilant, and we’re here to help at River Valley Veterinary Services! 🚑 🐄 🐐

Here in these bovine cases we placed a surgical bloat whistle for one free gas bloat in a thin heifer (predisposing factor = respiratory disease / pneumonia), and one frothy bloat in a lactating cow that got into a batch of moldy / ye**ty / improperly fermented feed 🌱 🦠 The whistle stays in place until the bloat is resolved and the good GI bacteria and function is restored.

📝 Reminder! After a fair, show, or travel, think BIOSECURITY and DISEASE PREVENTION! 🥇 Keep animals that are just arriving home separated from others for 10-21 days quarantine without nose to nose contact, and no shared food or water or supplies. We also have a new respiratory vaccine available for small ruminants! Discuss with your vets if you’d like to implement this into your protocols.

New equine news 🐎: make sure your horses are up to date on EEE vaccine! Lots of cases reported this time of year
