For some they are just starting up after a long winter off. Take the time needed to get them back in racing shape.

Dr. Noah Grimes, DVM, of Athens Equine in Athens, Texas, shares his top tips for achieving peak fitness in barrel horses.

15/03/2023

Our horses are athletes and that means they need to be prepared to perform.

Coming into spring and out of winter months our horses may not be in the best shape. Depending on where you live and what kind of weather you have had this winter might not have been able to ride as much as you would have liked to. That means that you might need to take some time to get your horse into better shape before starting to enter barrel races and rodeos.

Typically it takes a horse 45-60 days to get in top condition. Remember to gradually work your horse up to more intensive exercises. On the first day of getting my horse in shape, I might just spend a lot of time bending and flexing, walking my horse, and getting them back in the groove of exercise. From there gradually increase their exercise to trotting, loping, and then for longer amounts of time.

If you rush a horse into too strenuous exercise too quickly it could risk injury. Take care of your athletes. A fit horse will help you win the barrel race!

If you want to learn more about my exercise routine and how to get a horse in shape check out my book "Run To Win With Me" available on barrelracers.com

Missy is a sweet 6 year old grey Quarab mare standing at about 14.3. She is very smart, curious and brave. She is such a cool horse with a lot of potential, but she does need a confident, intermediate rider as she can be stubborn at times. She is good for Arena or Trail. Goes out on trial alone or in small groups. Started on Barrels, handles most Obstacles, Opens gates, ect Would love Sorting or Roping job. She is not spooky, isn’t bothered by bikes, dogs or cars. She is easy to catch, stands for saddling and for the farrier. Like most 6yr olds she just needs miles to finish her up. Good enough to go in any direction you want. Finish her your way.

When you’re working with your horse, remember that you’re not trying to perfect every single lesson everyday; you’re just trying to improve each one a little bit. If the horse is doing better today than yesterday, quit – you’ve done your job. It’s time to move on to a new exercise. The worst thing you can do to a horse is keep drilling on the same exercise until he absolutely hates it and gets a bad attitude. Work on the exercise, make it better than yesterday and then quit. - Clinton

All my horses get put on Alfalfa. It’s a good source of calories, moderate protein and low Starch/sugar. I get asked all the time does it make them hot.

No, if fed appropriately. Alfalfa provides a significant amount of calories; however, an excess of calories in any form, whether from alfalfa, grain or oil, without the exercise to burn them, can result in an excessively energetic horse.

What feed makes horses hot?

Feed ingredients such as oats, corn, barley, alfalfa and molasses have been identified by horse owners as causing “hyper”, “fizzy” or “hot” horses. Grains contain starch and sugar that may result in large fluctuations in blood sugar and result in mood or behavior changes. So in this instance it’s the spikes in Sugar that cause the issue.

Feeding a low starch/sugar Hay is best. Most horses do NOT need grain. A simple mineral supplement works well. They make balancers for Alfalfa based diets or grass hay diets. Choose correctly to keep them balanced. Alfalfa has more calcium so a balance with Phosphorus is needed. The ratio of Ca and P is always important when looking at horse rations. A ratio of two parts Ca: one part P is ideal, with a range of 1:1 to 6:1 being acceptable. Because phosphorous competes with Ca for absorption in the gut, total diets that are less than 1:1 or contain more P than Ca should be avoided. When the balance is not right the body will take calcium from other sources. Your horses bones.

Look at your labels and if possible have your hay tested.

This 10-year-old off the track thoroughbred has had 60 days training with another trainer. But when I started to ride he was nervous, wanting to move forward, didn’t want to stay at a walk, could not even do a basic circle, did not know how to carry the bit and needed more contact than I like. SO we went back to basement. I am going to build him back from the bottom so he will be a confident partner for his owner.

So last few days have just been learning to walk on a loose rein. Horses on the track deal with contact and tight riens. When you offer them no contact on a loose rein they can get nervous and scared. They will try to move off faster. So very important to only use one rein. (If you pull with 2 reins he will learn to leverage on the bit and it will become ineffective. He will also become stiff.) Every time they move faster than your asking gently bring the rein to your hip. When the feet stop and the head is not pulling release the rein to your knee. Rinse and repeat 10,000 times if necessary. Might take 3-7 days of the same thing for the horse to walk on loose rein. Once they get it good at a walk bump them to a trot. Then to the canter. Don’t move to next gate until they master the one before on Loose rein.

FYI - I would probably prefer to use a O Ring Snaffle. But am using the bit he is comfortable in.

Don’t let Joe’s age fool you. He is full of energy and never takes an off step. Sound with no maintenance needed. This guy will pace all day long if you ask him. Smooth as butter. You will not spill a drink while riding Joe out on the trails. He is confident and will try to do everything you ask.

He is a joy to ride. Will go out on trail alone or in a group. Doesn’t matter if he’s leading in the middle or following behind. He is comfortable wherever you put him.

He was a husband horse. His owner passed away in September. Wife does not need him so he is looking for his next home.

Check him out on this video.

What a great day. I rode a clients horse and helped anoth client on her horse. Was her 1st real trail ride. She did awesome and so did her horse Tonto. Little Smoky Joe did great too. They all hesitant at the 1st water crossing but by the last crossing they were all pros. Joe didn’t care if he lead, was in middle or last. But when he lead his normal walk was faster than the big horses. When we paced he left them in the dust. 😂 Need more days like this.

Do you Tie your horse everyday? I don’t, but I should. I always tie for some time after a ride. I believe it helps them decompress and absorb what they learned. Added bonus if I Hose them down they get to dry before they roll.

I am setting a goal for myself to get back in the habit of tying even if I don’t ride. This helps so much with patience. With my horses that don’t tie well I will use a Tie-blocker and put them in the round pen so if they do pull back they can’t go anywhere.

Tie depends on horses level of training. I like the Tie-blockers but sometimes they not available. (Although I should just carry one in my saddle bags) Joe in the pics is hard tied in the wash/saddle bar. W***y is on a patience pole. Patience poles swivel and allow horse to walk around if they nervous. Zues is on the tie-blocker in the round pen as he will pull back if scared.

So I recommend tying your horse for an hour or more as many days as you can. Maybe when you clean stalls? Or weeding? Or just reading a book?

This guy just came in for a tune up. He will be for sale. His dad passed away last fall and he been sitting since. Today was his first lesson. He lunges, round-pens, did EVERYTHING in the Obstacle arena with very little Encouragement, EVEN the water box, teater-totter and curtain. Will get him under saddle Monday or Tuesday once we get a few days of ground work in.

I don’t mind if my horse gets frightened. What I do mind is when he gets frightened and then takes matters into his own hands. Instead of bolting, bucking or rearing, you want your horse to look to you for guidance. Prove to him that every time he gets worried, panicked and uses the reactive side of his brain, he can turn to you and you’ll help him survive the experience. You’re going to take control of the situation by moving his feet forwards, backwards, left and right until he calms down and starts to use the thinking side of his brain. Every time you take control of the situation, the horse builds confidence in you as a leader. If you punish him for being reactive, he’ll get defensive, more frightened and lose confidence in you as a leader. - Clinton

Have been legging this guy up for 6 weeks. Before that he was Marc trail mount so only occasionally riden on long trail rides. Still Marc trail mount but my barrel horse. Not often you get that kind of unicorn.

Well today. We did our normal exercises then we walk, trot, and slow lope barrels. We both were feeling good. No pain in my body. Odin doing everything asked of him. SO I lined him up and asked for speed. Kisses and kicks and off we went. What a nice pattern we had. Next Wed we going out to a practice arena to make a run with a timer. Then I am hoping to hit a real barrel race again. It has been over 3 yrs since my last race but I think we are ready.

How do you know if a horse is too much horse? (For you)

So you have a A horse and you’re not sure if it’s too much horse for you. You have to ask yourself a few questions.(more than a few🤣)

Is the Horse too much because it’s miss behaving? OK Then you have to look into WHY the horse is miss behaving. Are you over feeding? Too many calories lead to extra energy. Is the bit hurting the mouth? Do the teeth need to be done? Does the saddle fit? Is it pinching? Is it set to far back? How about ulcers? Is your horse anxious? It could be ulcers. Is he sore somewhere? Try fixing these things and see if horse is better.

Maybe the horse is too much because he knows more than you. Horses that are well broke have very light and sensitive cues or buttons. A beginner might squeeze and get more go than they expected. Or lean to one side off Balance and horse will move sideways off the added weight to one side. You might have heavy hands when your horse might work 90% off leg pressure so he will get confused and frustrated. A confused horse will “act up” because they don’t understand what your asking. Or why your getting mad when they did exactly what you asked but you did not know you asked it.

There is a reason beginner horses are so in demand. They are Broke BUT not super sensitive. So heavy hands are Okay, being off Balance is Okay, squeezing to hard is Okay, at least while you learn. These things take practice to get better at. You need to learn timing, balance and coordination while trusting your horse not to act up.

BUT the best horse for growth in your riding skill WILL know just a little more than you. Not 10 levels higher. Just 1 or 2 levels. He will push you to be better. Push you to find the answers. A good horse will help you learn and grow as a horseman. Those come around once or twice in your riding career. The Unicorn

There is a horse for everyone. You just need to find the one that will let you learn without getting hurt. That will tolerate your mistakes. You will make mistakes. We all do. It’s how we learn. Enjoy the journey.

Thank you Hot Rod for being my best teacher.
