🎄🐾 Help Thorpe Find His Forever Home for the Holidays! 🐾🎄

Prim & Proper Dog Boarding and Grooming is thrilled to be participating in a local “Adopt a Dog” for the holidays in hopes to find their long list of “long term” residents.

We’re honored to sponsor Thorpe, a joyful and loving pup who deserves a cozy home and a family to call his own.

Meet Thorpe:
At 9 months old, Thorpe is full of energy and personality! He’s a smaller guy (just 28 lbs) but has a big heart. Thorpe loves people of all ages—he’s currently living happily with kids ranging from newborns to teens, and he’s great with other animals, including a male pittie, two pugs, and even six cats! Thorpe knows his basic commands, is house and crate trained, and while he can be a little sassy when meeting new dog friends, he settles in quickly. Thorpe is fully vetted, and while he may pull a bit on the leash, he’s eager to learn and eager to love.

Thorpe’s favorite things include:
✨ Running around outside
✨ Getting his “zoomies” out
✨ Playing with all sorts of toys
✨ Snuggling up for a snooze, preferably right next to you! (Meaning he would love to co sleep with his owners🥰)

This sweet boy is looking for a family to call his own, and we’re hoping to help him find his forever home this holiday season. ❤️

Thorpe’s Christmas Wishlist 🎁:
• Purina Pro Plan Puppy Shredded Chicken Food
• American-made treats
• A new comfy bed
• Any fun toys to play with!

If you’re interested in donating items for Thorpe, please reach out to me! Wish list link here: https://www.amazon.com/registries/gl/guest-view/10V8M7BFKP0TU

Let’s give Thorpe the holiday love he deserves!

Thank you to everyone who supports this special pup! Please like, share, and help us spread the word so Thorpe can find his forever family this season. 💖

Let’s talk ear mats

As in.. impacted hair inside the ear. Most of the time it’s wax build up with ear hair. Typical in poodle or poodle mix breeds.

Why didn’t your groomer pluck the ears?

It is becoming more and more common for vets to caution groomers against plucking ear hair. It opens the pores to bacteria, commonly causing ear infections. Doodles and poodles get enough ear infections as it is. It’s a double edged sword though. If you don’t keep these ear canals clean, they’ll get infected. But if you keep plucking, they’ll get infected.

So what do you do?

When an ear clearly looks like this - a groomer will pluck the impacted mat out. What I specially won’t do… is pluck the rest of the hair out.

It hurts. It’s not a fun process for the dog. The worse it is, the more it hurts. If it’s red and stinky then it’s likely infected. I will not pluck an irritated ear. At that point it is a vets job 🙂

In a nutshell - these mats can be avoided by owners doing weekly cleanings in their dogs ears. The more they clean out, the less waxy they get which in turn means less impacted mats. Don’t blame a groomer for an infection by not plucking the ears, and then blame for an infection because of plucking too much 😉

The right ratio is the fix to everything 🙂

Sebastian realized how close we are to our Christmas photo time. We are missing our beloved Santa this year, but we will be offering a photo opportunity at Clover's Closet.

Starting this Saturday through Christmas, we will have a Christmas backdrop for you to bring your own pets in to take your own photos for a $5 donation. And some possible appearances by a Grinchy friend on Nov 10.

Hours until Christmas starting Nov 9:

Friday 11-7
Saturday 11-5
Sunday 11-2

*Clover’s closet will be closed this Friday, Nov 8 due to prior events.

We hope to see many of our 4-legged friends come through and snap a picture and maybe grab some goodies. 😉

❤️we are not accepting any more name suggestions, and we are also not accepting applications for this boy. This includes pre-approvals❤️

This sweet boy made his way to the Haven this evening after being surrendered to a Humane Officer. He’s a 2 year old reported Aussiedoodle. We know nothing else about him at this time so will not be able to answer further questions. He will spend some time settling into his foster home, starting his vet care, getting a much needed groom, and letting us know his personality and preferences. He will be added to our webpage and our “meet our angels” album here on fb when he is ready for a new family, but until then, we’ll be learning what he needs and what he enjoys. This means we are not accepting applications.

We do, however, know he will need a name. Would you like to help with that? If you’d like to send a name suggestion, a 5 dollar donation can be sent via CashApp, Venmo, or Zelle, and you can add your name in the notes or memo sections of the app you choose to use.

Stipulations—it can’t be a name we’ve already used (if using CashApp or Venmo, we’ll let you know in your comment section to submit another. Zelle does not give us phone numbers to contact back, so if sending Zelle, please also message the page with your name suggestion. We also would like to use a name coinciding with a thanksgiving theme. Since we’re thankful for the opportunity to give him a chance at a better life, and we’re thankful for all of you❤️

Tomorrow evening, we will post the suggestions we’ve gotten, and you can vote on what his new name will be.

Please do not comment suggestions below, they will not be considered.

For now, welcome to the Haven sweet boy.

Fleas are REALLY bad this year - I’ve had 21 calls in 3 days asking if I will treat them. 18 out of 21 was a poodle mix of some kind. Only 9 of 21 are regularly groomed. They really love that warm fur 🙂

No. I don’t.

If I do, I risk contaminating my entire shop, getting them myself, and infecting my own house with them. It’s hundreds, almost thousands to have a pest company treat for them.

What you CAN do:

-keep your dog on a monthly preventative chewable tablet, you can not miss the doses

- seresto brand ONLY collars are good for 6-8 months, other brands are not as effective

What happens if your dog already has fleas?

Two words: treatment vs preventative

A dog without fleas uses a preventative
A dog WITH fleas needs a treatment

Topicals like frontline will not cure a dog who already has fleas. At this point it is internal and they need a chewable.

Capstar lasts 24 hours. Vets can only give prescriptions to dogs who have been seen within the last year - you NEED a vet prescribed chewable to effectively treat and prevent fleas after an infestation.

If your dog has fleas, it needs a chewable from the vet and you need to wash all bedding in every room of the house. Spray permethrin all over the house and the yard. Everywhere. Vacuum 3x a day for 2 weeks to suspend the eggs and lifecycle.

And last but not least 🙂

Keep them on a chewable or get the seresto collar 🙂

Much love,

Taylor 🫶🏻

💝Friendly Policy Updates!! 💝

1. 🚫Flea Policy🚫:
We’ve noticed an increase in flea cases, and to keep everyone safe, we need your help! If we find more than three fleas or a noticeable amount of flea dirt when you check in, we’ll kindly ask you to pick up your dog. Each dog is checked upon arrival, but sometimes they can be missed. We don’t treat fleas on-site due to contamination risks, but if we discover fleas too far into grooming, we’ll finish the groom with an additional $50 fee. For future visits, please ensure your dog has been treated with a vet-approved chewable tablet. Unfortunately, collars or topicals aren’t effective after an infestation. If your pup hasnt been groomed on a regular 6 week minimum schedule, we will require proof of flea prevention moving forward. We appreciate your understanding as we work to keep our facility safe for all our furry friends! Our personal favorite vet Bracken Ridge Veterinary Medical Doctor occasionally has discounts for flea/tick treatment and preventives. 😃

2. 🦟Flea Prevention Requirement🦟:
To keep our boarding pups happy and healthy, we require all dogs to be on monthly flea chewables or a Seresto brand only collar. Please bring proof of treatment at check-in!

3. 🐕Double Coated Dogs🐕:
We love our double-coated friends (like Shepherds, Retrievers, and Huskies)! However, we don’t shave these breeds unless they’ve been previously shaved. It is harmful to their coats and is not something we like to believe in doing 🙂 Honestly, crushes me 💔

4. 💚Geriatric Dogs💚:
We want to ensure the comfort of our senior pups. For their safety, we will no longer shave geriatric dogs that take longer than two hours to groom (typically those over 25 lbs). Their well-being is our top priority!

5. 💲Pricing Adjustments💲:
You may notice some changes in grooming prices. We charge based on the work done rather than the time it takes, so you might pay a bit more or less than before.

6. 🗃️Software Update🗃️:
Exciting news! We’re switching to a new software system that will make things easier for everyone. I am SO excited at how much easier this new one is to use 🙂 Don’t worry—you won’t need to do anything. We’ll share more details soon!

Thank you for being a part of our business! If you have any questions, feel free to reach out!

I have some grooming spots open for tomorrow 08/15 and Wednesday 08/16!!! let me know if anyone needs in!! 🙂

Programs

Prim & Proper Dog Training is located in South Central Pennsylvania. We offer in home extensive and implemented dog training for dogs of all breeds and ages one on one. Quality care and time is exceeded with your dog throughout the entire course of it’s training. Your dog means a lot and it is important to ensure it receives the quality care it deserves. Have a puppy that you would like to get started on being a genuine dog? Look no further. We offer an inclusive 6 week puppy training program available for puppies age 8 to 16 weeks. Dogs are happy to please their owners and we like to teach young pups the importance of respect and structure. A dog with structure can be the vast difference between an over-reactive dog at the vet’s office constantly pulling on leash and barking to interact with others versus a trained dog that sticks to it’s owners side waiting on the next command. Starting in the puppy stage ensures a lifetime of a well behaved dog. Potty training help? No task too big or small. Typically, this is a 2 week training program. A recommended change in diet is the first change we will typically ask of you as the owner to do. Sorry folks, no Purina dog food :) Jumping on guests? Pulling on leash? Attacking other dogs to interact? We can help. Dogs are social animals. Playing is a natural instinct to them and their affection towards their owners is natural. However, it is also important for a dog to learn what is okay and what is not okay in an everyday situation. Food aggression? Aggressive behavior? Constant barking? Some dogs have their flaws. It certainly isn’t an overnight fix which is why the board and train program helps with a one on one interaction between dog and trainer. Hunting, Agility, Sporting or Dock Dog? We can train based on your needs. All dogs for this will go through an 8 week train and board. To inform our clients of training methods it is important to understand that harsh punishment is never advised or used. E-collars are lightly used during training methods on dogs of the appropriate age. Food motivation is used in certain situations and only for the first few training sessions. Food given is simply their everyday kibble they are fed. No milk-bones or puperonis :) Please call, message, or email us for any further questions. Our prices are competitive and affordable. Helping your dog is the main priority.
