Brix, an 8 month old 82 lb Great Dane cross, was channelling his inner cat today. I've actually never had a dog jump on the counter before (exam table yes, counter no). I was impressed.

Is there a new respiratory disease in dogs?
It is in the news but the answer so far is: We don't know.
It could be that there really is a new bug in the mix, a new pathogen in the Canine Infectious Respiratory Disease Complex (CIRDC) - the medical term that replaced ‘kennel cough.'
It could be that some dogs are getting particularly severe forms of the common, community-acquired dog cold/flu infections.
Last summer, we had 2 cases of upper respiratory infection progress to pneumonia. Both were relatively young dogs and both made a full recovery.
Could these be related to the news? Maybe, but it could be confirmation bias - interpreting new information in a way that confirms something you already think. Respiratory disease is in the news and the worldwide covid pandemic is fresh in our minds. Dr Weese, a specialist in infectious disease at the Ontario Veterinary College, has been following the reports and investigations since at least this summer. His blog has his current opinion: Worms and Germs.
Notably, there has been no recent uptick in cases of CIRDC or sick-pet visits in our hospital. We'll keep you posted if we think there are additional risks you should be aware of or if there's anything else you can do to keep your pets safe. For now:
Keep up to date on vaccines as recommended for your pet.
Keep your dog away from other dogs if they are sick.
Call us if your pet isn't feeling well.

Keep your puppies away from dogs for which you don't know the vaccine status - dog parks, pet stores, etc.
The vaccine for Parvo (often included in the distemper combination DHPP) is a very good one but you won't have full protection until at least 4 months of age after at least 2 vaccines.

Veterinarians are encouraged to call the Laboratory if they have any questions about sample collection, submission, or diagnostic options and contact MDARD if unusual or reportable illnesses are seen.

PLEASE NOTE: PVSEC will not be taking ANY patients this weekend: 4pm today until Sunday at 4am... unless they are critical or life threatening illness. We recommend either MEDVET at 724-717-2273 or AVETS at 412-373-4200 as alternatives.
