We often get contacted by people who have found a dog or a cat and are hoping that we will take the animal into rescue, but we need to remind everyone that the law in every New England state is that any found animals must be turned over to the local animal control authority. We often take dogs and cats from local shelters after they have served their legally mandated stray hold, but we are unable to take in found animals unless asked to do so by an animal control authority. Please, if you find a lost dog or cat, your first step is to contact animal control in the community where the animal was found! And this is important – if the animal control officer is off duty or if it's after business hours, please call the nonemergency line at the local police department rather than leave a message with animal control.
