We've just listed Zeus as available for adoption, and this boy has a bit of a complicated history with us. He's a five-year-old Shih Tzu who came to us 2 1/2 years ago as an owner surrender, and we pretty quickly noted some concerning behaviors. Specifically, Zeus is very affectionate, but only on his own terms! He had a traumatic experience with grooming and doesn't tolerate being touched or cuddled unless he initiates it. He works closely with our trainer and thank goodness he found someone special who adopted him and gave him a fabulous life, but when his owner became sick he was returned to us. He was quickly adopted, but then returned again after a bite incident. We knew then that Zeus needed intensive training and evaluation before we could adopt him out again.
For the last few months, he's been working very hard with our trainer and with a foster mom he knows and trusts, and his sweet and wonderful side has emerged again! Zeus loves walks, outdoor time, adventures in the car, cuddling on the couch with his favorite people, and playing with his doggy friend in his foster home. Zeus doesn't like to be surprised! Or touched by people he doesn't know.
We're confident that in the right home, Zeus will thrive! He does well with dogs that are larger than him, but he is not cat friendly. We also will not be adopting him to a home with children. He really is worth the extra time it takes to get to know him, and he promises to give his love and loyalty to a special person who will respect his limits and give him the life he deserves.
