If any facility you bring your dog to recommends or requires you to put your dog on a prong collar, don’t walk, RUN from that facility!

I don’t care if it’s your vet, daycare, groomer or some other professional making this recommendation. Chances are they are not a certified behavior professional and don’t have the qualifications to make this recommendation.

They may say it’s harmless but they are wrong. It can not only cause physical harm but also cause long term behavioral issues.

I don’t know about you, but I would not be willing to risk long term damage to my companion by advice given by someone unqualified to give that advice to begin with.

You wouldn’t let your family doctor perform brain surgery, would you? Same concept, they are in the medical profession, but they don’t know enough to cut into your brain.

There are plenty of other animal professionals out there who can accommodate your dog safely without the use of a prong collar.

It is still pit bull awareness month, we want to hear from you. Tell us what you’ve heard about pit bull type dogs?

One common thing we hear often is that they have locking jaws, this is a myth.

Lock jaw is a symptom of tetanus where a dog cannot close or open their mouth. It is not specific to any breed of dog and tetanus is rare in dogs.

The myth comes from the fact that bully breeds tend to be tenacious and therefore put extreme effort into everything they do including holding onto bulls once they’ve grabbed them.

A pit bull type dogs skull, teeth and jaw are no different than any other breed of dog in order to make lock jaw possible.

A lot of dogs want you to know this -

Instead of a fancy collar and bed? They’d rather have a fenced in yard - even if it has to be small and home made - so they can have off leash time to dog and dig.

Instead of daily neighborhood walks? They’d rather you drive to a dirt road and put them on a 30ft line and let them zig zag and smell as long as they like

Instead of twice daily meals in a bowl? They’d rather have food through enrichment activities that stimulates their brain and their nose.

Instead of basic obedience training? They’d rather have purpose driven training that feeds their genetic make up and needs AND helps them survive and thrive in todays world.

Instead of a human wanting something from them? They’d love a human wanting to understand them better.

Instead of focusing on perfect “heels” and “stays”? They’d love to learn how to be resilient and less stressed and cope with the outside world and our expectations.

Instead of harsh punishments and corrections? They’d prefer proactive management and rewards for good decisions.

We can’t change everything about the lives our dogs are forced to live with us in, but we can make these kinds of changes and see a huge improvement in their quality of life and wellbeing.
