Josie has become obsessed with barn swallows. This is after a few laps of chasing the ATV. You can hear the others are drinking while she’s busy chasing!
Blind grass retrieves. After about 1/2 hour of fetch we did some complete blind retrieves. Before playing fetch I planted to balls with pheasant scent and told her to find it. Video 1. I’ll take feedback and will add some of my own in comments later.

Josie has been doing great. Here’s a quick video of her struggling to pick up the scent on one of the blind retrieves. I seen a lot of great things here though. I liked her working, I like her circling and she’s clearly got a good nose as you’ll see towards the end when she picks it up. She’s gonna be a good one!
If I can tomorrow, I will try to get her on live birds, pigeons.

What to do… I know what to do in this case.
Josie excited, humans annoyed
I have had a very specific plan with our kennel and it's hunting/family/breeding concept. It is now time for the next phase.
I first starting hunting pheasants with my dad and his brother (Uncle Rick). Outside of my wife, kids and in general family, at the time it literally was some of the best days of my young life. The older I got the more I wanted to hunt... dad couldn't always be available to go and I was never as good without him as I was with him. So naturally, I got a dog! That dog was a field bred cocker spaniel. Dog drove me nuts but I LOVED hunting pheasants with him, man he was a tough old dog! Upon his passing and me getting older yet, I got my first springer. It changed my entire perspective on hunting.
Every single breed of dog, even the mixed, will bring a certain amount of joy and can legit hunt, whether hunting or companionship but none has done as much for me as a springer spaniel.
I had always wanted to start a breeding program but never to the magnitude that I wanted to not be able to hunt my dogs.
I soon, like many of us, fell in love with the roan dogs. Love them in all the shades to be honest, especially in tri. I of course was enamored with the lemons a little later. With the help of others I was able to incorporate it all together.
It is now time for the next "great visionary" step with our kennel. There are two things that I want to work on, while maintaining the work of our line as it is. By no means is my vision better than any other breeding kennel, this is what I want to do with my line. 1. Bring the size down some. So many springers that are of the "cosmopolitan" lines seem larger. I want to bring my line down to that 48-52 male size and 40-45 female size. Along with bring the legs down some as well, too many tall dogs out there. 2. I want to bring the intensity of a field springer to my line and yet keep it controlled. If you haven't ever see a 100% field bred dog work, you would be in awe. I truly encoura
The old lady still wants to get those darn birds!!! I picked up a few pheasants to mess around with and this is exactly what my wife said would not be very nice for these dogs!!! I’m like what’s not good the exercise????? Of course she thinks I’m tormenting them!
Gronk x Maple
The “HUNT”!!!
We have a visitor this weekend, Maple (Scout x Marley) also Storms sister. This was Scouts last litter. This pair created some very skilled hunting dogs and incredible diversified family members as well.
Maple, here on “business”, is being bred to Gronk this weekend. This pairing should throw a rainbow of colors in black and liver in tri, standard, roan and ticked. I would expect a good shot at some lemons as well. Both Maple and Gronk carry the lemon coat gene. Maybe even some sables in both black and liver.
You all know I think the world of Scout so here’s your chance to pull some genetics from him. Gronk is from my superstar Dixie line (out of Rivers Edge Kennels). That line has thrown me some of the best hunting dogs. Gronk has his grandmas nose and desire to please his family.
Upon confirmation of successful breeding there will be more info available.
Storm is also in preheat and I will announce if we make the conscious decision to have her bred as well.
