ARE YOU WORTH COMING BACK TO?

I often cringe when I watch people trying to get their dogs to come back when they call.

They call and call and get increasingly angry and frustrated as their dog keeps ignoring them.

When their dog eventually does come back, or has been chased and "captured” by the now really angry person, they get screamed at, yanked about, smacked or punished in some way for taking so long and not listening.

Why on earth would a dog want to return to someone who does this to them!

Genetics may play a big part in this when an environment is far more stimulating and exciting.

Coming back to you is often the last thing a dog may want to do when genetic instinct is triggered.

An exciting scent or seeing something to chase can all override a response to recall.

Genetics aside, the most common reason that dogs don’t come back when called is because it’s not a positive experience.

Make coming back to you worth it by always making it a rewarding experience and keep practicing this throughout a dog’s life.

Have a little patience if it takes longer than you would like, let your dog finish what they’re doing before calling them, practice in different locations and environments and never reprimand or punish them for coming back.

There is never a guarantee of a perfect recall each and every time, but making it a rewarding experience will greatly improve the rate of success.

"If you're bundled up, and you find that it's too cold and you can't handle it any longer, your dog probably can't either," one veterinarian said.

Tarameg is proud to have multiple Goldens involved in the Morris Foundation’s Golden Retriever Lifetime Study, including four at the farm in Pennsylvania and a few with our beloved families as well.

Scientists are studying golden retrievers, both to help the dogs and to learn more about human cancers. Dogs and humans share most of the same genes.

Dogs are notoriously bad at dissipating body heat. Watch for early signs of heatstroke (also known as hyperthermia) in your dog to avoid serious outcomes.

A WORD ABOUT WAGS
Contrary to popular belief, a wagging tail doesn’t always mean a dog is happy. You may have heard - “I don’t understand why that dog reacted badly to me; his tail was wagging!”

Dogs communicate through so many different types of body language, but the wag and the tail position are probably one of the easier to notice.

As with most things dog behaviour related it depends on the individual dog. Some breeds naturally carry their tails in a different position and some breeds wag their tails differently to others.

Wags and tail positions should always be looked at in context and in conjunction with the rest of a dogs’ body language.

By taking note of how your dog’s tail usually looks or how that tail behaves when they’re really excited or happy to see you, provides a good base line to interpret other types of tail language.

I’m probably odd, but I often watch my dogs’ tails with fascination as they stalk or hunt for something, bark at something outside the gate or see another dog approaching while out walking.

The type of wag and position of their tails gives me so much information about their emotional state.

Although some people won’t agree, I definitely see wags to the right when my dogs are happy and wags to the left when there is arousal, uncertainty, predatory behaviour or other emotions going on.

Not only is the tail an important method of communication but it also plays a role in balance, stability, movement and counterbalancing when a dog quickly changes direction.

I believe that tail docking destroys an essential part of a dog's ability to communicate with other dogs by creating a distinct social disadvantage or misunderstanding as tail signals can’t be read.

People with working dogs believe that tail docking is necessary to prevent tail injuries or improve permormance, but many countries have banned this practice either completely or only under specific medical circumstances.

Start taking notice of what your dog is doing with their tail - you may find it interesting and it may open up a new way of understanding how your dog is feeling.

Did you know, just like humans, dogs also go through a teenage phase? My dog is nearing the end of this phase and it’s been very frustrating at times, but also rewarding to watch her grow and mature.

BRAIN UNDER CONSTRUCTION!
The challenges of teenage dogs
There’s a saying that parents who have gone through the teenage years with their off spring will relate to - “Parents with teenagers understand why some animals eat their young!”

Many dog owners are unaware that dogs also go through a teenage stage and are frustrated and unprepared for the changes this brings. It’s a sad reality that this is the age that many dogs are surrendered to shelters as their owners no longer “like” the way their dogs behave, can’t handle them and give up on them.

The teenage brain is going through many changes. Think of it as being “rewired”. The rewiring process can cause some parts not to work at all or only work sometimes. Some parts work too much with too much current and new wires cause unexpected results.

There are many similarities to the changing human teenage brain. There’s a valid scientific reason why car insurance premiums for young adults under 25 are more expensive. The brain is not fully matured – irrational decisions, risk taking, poor choices and accidents are more likely to happen.

Be patient, understanding and most of all consistent with your teenage dog. Don’t give up on them. They are feeling just as frustrated as we are. Being aware of what is happening in their brain as it develops to full maturity helps us to be more accepting. Remember that this is just a phase and it will get better.

WHOSE WALK IS IT ANYWAY?
Imagine going on a long-anticipated walk, through new scenery and enticing scents after being cooped up in the same place all day, but you have been fitted with a blind fold and are being dragged or yanked along at a quick pace.

I imagine that this is how dogs feel when we don’t allow them time to stop, sniff and explore the environment. Dogs largely perceive their world through scent and it’s how they collect and process information and make sense of the world.

Taking away an opportunity for sniffing on a walk really isn’t fair and as much as physical exercise is important, the mental stimulation that sniffing provides is equally, if not more important.

Allowing dogs to choose when to stop and sniff provides so many benefits – increases self-confidence, promotes calmness, lowers stress and anxiety levels, lowers pulse rates, reduces cognitive decline in older dogs and provides important mental and environmental enrichment.

Make time for a slow sniffing walk when you can, where your dog is allowed to choose which direction to go and allowed time to just investigate, interpret the environment and follow wherever their nose leads them.

It may take far more time and patience as we wait for them to finish smelling that particular blade of grass, but the benefits are well worth it – after all, whose walk is it anyway?

A CASE OF THE ZOOMIES
Why do some dogs seemingly out of the blue, suddenly start racing around like they’ve gone completely mad! Some dogs do and some dogs don’t, but it’s a normal canine behaviour that usually serves a purpose. The most common cause of the zoomies is when dogs are feeling happy, really excited or need to release pent up energy. A dog that has frequent zoomies may be a sign that your dog needs more mental or physical stimulation.
Zoomies are harmless as long as your dog is racing around in a safe space and there aren’t small children, older people or ornaments, furniture etc. that could be knocked over. It can be really entertaining and funny to watch.
I have 4 dogs, 2 of which have never had the zoomies. The other 2 will zoom around after having a bath or when a special person arrives that they have an attachment to. Does your dog get a case of the zoomies and what seems to trigger it?

NOW that we’ve got your attention, ball size is very important! One ball doesn’t fit all dogs. The last thing you want is an chocking accident occurring because of a wrong size ball. 🎾🏀⚽️🥎

Balls!
The size, texture, shape and the amount of time playing with them matters!

They can be the most exciting thing to play with and most dogs love them, but ......

Please be aware of the dangers

Size - Choking is a big hazard so please make sure the ball is too big to go down the throat
It should be just big enough to hold in the mouth, but to big to go down the throat

Texture- tennis balls are very abrasive so gradually wear the dog’s teeth down
This gradual wearing down of the tooth enamel is referred to as “blunting.” its irreversible damage

Shape - balls with no holes in (especially solid rubber ones that get slimy) can be a real choking hazard. I would recommend a "breathe easy" ball (pic in comments) as if it does get stuck the dog can still breathe, or a rope ball

And Time- you may think repeatedly throwing a ball for a dog to chase will burn off energy and wear it out right??

WRONG , to much hard physical exercise does more harm than good.

Apart from the obvious physical issues and injuries it causes in the joints, there are many other issues associated with repetitive ball chasing.
When dogs can get over aroused, their heartrate and respiration will rapidly increase, and they will have very poor impulse control.
They may jump around or on you, could have dilated pupils, chattering teeth, be mouthy, spin, pace or circle, or be very vocal. (Accidents happen very easily at this stage)
When a dog gets in a hyper aroused state the body releases adrenaline, then with the repeated exposure to this adrenaline from continued ball chasing, cortisol gets released into the body.
These hormones can hang around for hours even days or weeks.
Therefore if your dog is engaging in these activities daily, the body never has time to recover so dogs are over excitable or reactive.

All things should be done in moderation
Have fun but stay safe
