📣 You notice that your dog has started to exhibit a certain behavior that you don’t like and doesn’t benefit the dog’s state of mind. So you work a few sessions here and there to try and desensitize the dog or familiarize it with whatever it’s reacting to or redirect it, etc. That takes an hour here and there in your day. But, what is your dog doing the rest of the day? Is it able to continue to react to whatever you’re trying to correct? Is it able to make choices that are not going to benefit it and your training plan? Is it able to run around the house with full freedom bouncing on the couch, at the window barking?
These are the things that we as leaders need to ask ourselves so that we can set the dog up for the success. If this sounds familiar to you, and you’re not making any progress with your dog, then you may want to reassess your management throughout the day. Once you’re able to create a path where you are in charge of the experience, then you and your dog will have a better outcome. 🫶🏻🐾
If you need more information or if I can help you with you and your dog, please let me know!

Today was a day where I had a training plan. A plan where I was going to take Quincy to a quiet park and see how she was on leash, in public settings etc. but, my plan wouldn’t have been a positive experience for Quincy - so we pivoted. Instead - we tailgated and watched as the world went by, where she was comfortable, all while getting rewarded. Positive until she’s ready to experience it with better coping skills that she will learn in training.
Sometimes it’s ok to have a change in plans. 🫶🏻🐾

🐾 This is a great read on how important hormones are for the development of dogs, both male and female. Please check it out and know that there are alternatives to the common spay and neuter, HSS (hormone saving surgery) so that your pet can live their healthiest and happiest life!

***
FOR THOSE CONSIDERING CASTRATION OF THEIR DOG:
This is from a Canadian vet, and his saga with his own dog post neutering at ~4-5 years old, and his eye opening experience, AND regret at doing it.
"Pax grew up as a healthy and strong puppy, and I thought I had natural health nutrition dialed in. However, life always has something new to teach us about dogs, especially when we "should know everything"
As a service dog for my sleepwalking, Pax had to be neutered to be officially certified. Six months later, he started getting injured, which I now know was due to the absence of testosterone and related muscle loss.
It took me a couple of very frustrating years to figure this out. I was worried and knew there was a missing piece of the puzzle.
But I never give up!
After a relentless search, I came across the research of two amazing colleagues, specialists, and scientists, Dr. Linda Brent, PhD, MBA, MS, BS, and Dr. Michelle Kutzler, DVM, PhD, DACT, and it all clicked!
Pax was getting injured as a result of having no testosterone, which we now know is crucial in the muscular-skeletal health of male dogs.
For decades, we have been causing damage by taking our dogs' hormones away which has led to many health issues. Just thinking about how many dogs have been affected by the same problems as Pax makes me feel like I have no choice but to sound an alarm!
What problems are caused by this issue?
Based on research, the absence of s*x hormones in dogs can affect muscles and joints, lead to cruciate ligament tears, thyroid gland dysfunction, organ failure, fearfulness, and aggression (due to brain inflammation), and increase the incidence of some types of cancers, such as lymphoma, hemangiosarcoma, and osteosarcoma.
How can we prevent this from continuing?
As a community, we need to promote hormone-sparing sterilization and inform people that conventional neutering and spaying procedures are no longer viable methods of preventing dog homelessness.
About a month ago, I met with Dr. Michelle Kutzler and Dr. Linda Brent and decided to organize an information campaign to make the necessary shift.
Tens of thousands of dogs are neutered and spayed conventionally every day, and suffering from the consequences of lack of hormones.
I really believe we can change this together with you and all the open vets out there. Our dogs need our protection to live many happy and healthy years by our side.
Thank you for considering being a part of the solution.”

Alright if there is one movement thats annoying the crap out of me its the:

“When we go walk its my dogs time and he gets to do whatever he wants and I just follow him. Its super enriching and fullfilling so its okay if he pulls.”

There is a time and place for sniffaris 100%, dont take this post as me saying “dont let your dog sniff”.

But it is a post about me saying that there is nothing wrong or selfish or mean about you putting some rules and boundaries on your dog to stop them from dragging you around, into the mud or endlessly stopping at every single tree.

You are 100% absolutely allowed to say “not now, lets go”… without being a “bad owner”.
As with everything moderation and context is important.

Ill post the video in the comments but I basically explain WHY putting rules in your walk is actually super beneficial for your dog, great for your relationship and their sense of security especially if your dog has impulse control issues, reactivity or tends to ignore you..

What do you think? Am I wrong? Right?

What kind of lifestyle training have you added your dog in lately?
Place/bed while folding laundry? Down stays while doing the dishes? Recall on your long walk? Tell me!
I always like to remind my clients that training is a lifestyle - not just an hour or so with me. This is such a great share! ☺️✌🏻🐾

Great read!
Put your pup in a buggy until they are safe to be on the ground (only time you’ll hear me say that!). Take them places so they can take in sights and sounds. Reward them lots! You’re not there for everyone to say hi to your cutie but rather for them to desensitize to things and learn to *not* get overly excited. This will be huge as they get bigger. You should be more valuable than any other thing or person or dog. I’d love to work with you and your puppy, give me a shout!

MYTH: "Don’t take your puppy anywhere until they're fully vaccinated."

FACT: "The primary and most important time for puppy socialization is the first three months of life. For this reason, the American Veterinary Society of Animal Behavior believes that it should be the *standard of care* for puppies to receive such socialization before they are fully vaccinated. Behavioral issues, not infectious diseases, are the number one cause of death for dogs under three years of age." (AVSAB Position Statement on Puppy Socialization)

FACT: If you wait until your puppy is full vaccinated, you've missed their critical socialization period.

Vets, rescues and breeders who are clinging to the outdated belief that dogs should be prevented from socialization until fully vaccinated are not keeping up with the current research, literature and recommendations from behavior professionals.

Great advice!

Great advice!

The goal of training is to build a relationship, a bond… A connection. It’s beyond doing an exercise right or wrong. It’s about creating a communication and a connection. That’s why I love training with my dogs.

Go out and do something with your dog. Connect with them!

Congratulations to this crazy boy! We started off with a whirling dervish, a dog who had no regard for boundaries, pulled on leash and ended up with a dog who is engaged and ready to do the next thing that you asked them to do!
His mom worked tirelessly every week to build that relationship with him so that each week the struggle was less and less. Before we started training, she would come home from work and have to change her clothes before letting Buddy out of his crate because he would jump all over her and bite on her arms. 😱
We did a complete reset, and now he understands his boundaries, he loves to work and loves to learn, and most importantly loves to be a good boy.
Congratulations to all of you! I hope to see you in the future for some follow up lessons around town. 🥳 🐾🫶🏻
