EEE is a dangerous and deadly virus! Now is a great time to boosters your horses vaccinations. There have been multiple confirmed cases around the state this summer.

Cases of Eastern Equine Encephalomyelitis have been diagnosed recently within the Mississippi horse population.
Eastern Equine Encephalomyelitis is a virus transmitted by mosquitoes to horses from wild birds that are asymptomatically infected. Clinical signs of EEE include ataxia, fever, depression, behavior changes, and recumbency with inability to rise. Almost all horses infected with EEE will die or eventually require euthanasia. Humans may also be infected if bitten by mosquitoes, but direct horse-to-human transmission does not occur. Cases of EEE tend to peak in late summer to early fall.
Eastern Equine Encephalomyelitis is a recommended core vaccination (recommended for all horses) by the American Association of Equine Practitioners - along with Western Equine Encephalomyelitis (WEE), West Nile Virus (WNV), rabies, and tetanus. All horses should be vaccinated at least once per year against these five diseases. Vaccination against EEE, WEE, and WNV every six months is advisable in areas with longer mosquito seasons, such as Mississippi. The vaccine is highly effective in preventing EEE in horses. Mosquito control is very important to reduce horses’ exposure to mosquitoes and eliminate potential mosquito breeding sites. Your primary care veterinarian is your best resource for advice on what vaccination schedule is most helpful for your horses and farm practices.

We’ll miss Kelly so much! She’s been with us for three years and has been the friendly voice and face you hear and see first. We’re thankful for her time here and are wishing her well as she moves onto another chapter in life!

This week’s case of the week:

This sweet little puppy came in Monday with severe anemia and a significant hookworm infestation. She was anemic enough that a blood transfusion was required to give this baby a chance.

Due to the short shelf life and high cost of keeping blood on hand from a blood bank, we do not keep stored blood in the clinic. This is where Ruby stepped in. Ruby is Dr. King’s personal dog and hunting partner.

She played the hero role and donated blood twice this week and helped this little fluffy puppy get to go home to her family yesterday.

Blood transfusions play an important role is saving critically injured or sick patients. We don’t do them often, but when they’re needed, there’s no substitute for them!

One cool thing about dogs is, in an emergency, we can use blood from any dog for a transfusion without cross matching blood types, as long as it is the first transfusion for the receiving dog.

It’s always best to cross match the types, but in critical patients, there often isn’t enough time.

Our little puppy is happy and playing at home.

Ruby is just asking when she can donate again….she’s in it for the extra treats! 🤣
