Welcome Gustavo! 💚💙🩵

June also happens to be National Zoo and Aquarium Month 🐾🌊! We’re excited to celebrate by highlighting our partners at the Roger Williams Park Zoo 🎉 Your commitment to animal care, conservation, and community involvement inspires Rhode Island every day.

Someone new to the Zoo is sticking their tongue out at the world (and it's adorable)! We are ecstatic to announce the birth of a male southern tamandua pup named Gustavo!

Gustavo was born on May 3rd to parents Carina and Salvador. Both mom and baby are doing great! He is currently weighing in at just about 2 pounds. Gustavo is a little adventurer, exploring around his habitat while mom takes a nap. They will be hanging out and bonding behind-the-scenes for now, but we will be sure to share updates on when he can be seen roaming around the Faces of the Rainforest mixed species habitat.

Attention Veterinarians! The Rhode Island Department of Environmental Management (DEM) and the Rhode Island Department of Health (HEALTH) would like to remind veterinarians that they should be aware of the threat of cyanobacteria (also known as blue-green algae) toxicity in pets and livestock within the state.

Veterinarians who diagnose these toxicities in their patients are often the sentinels who bring awareness of the presence of these toxins to public health and environmental officials so that these officials can take appropriate actions to mitigate the risk of additional toxicity in people and in animals.

Please report suspected cases of Blue-Green Algae toxicity to RI State Veterinarian, Dr. Scott Marshall via email or at 401-537-4281.

CDC Pet Travel Rules - Please Note Changes Effective 8/1/24!

New rules for bringing a dog into the United States will go into effect on August 1, 2024.

Starting on August 1, 2024, dogs entering or returning to the United States must meet new, specific requirements depending on where they have been in the 6 months before entering the U.S. and where they received their rabies vaccines (if required).

As you know, the RIVMA Companion Animal Foundation is the first veterinary-based assistance program in the nation.

In 2023, the CAF distributed more than $120,000 throughout our state to aid in the treatment of hundreds of pets of low-income owners through the annual allocation and voucher programs.

The support of RIVMA member practices is incredibly important to the CAF. RIVMA members know that these dollars help provide treatment to our neediest patients.

To raise funds for these important programs, the CAF will once again host the Golf Classic event at the Misquamicut Club in Watch Hill. This year the tournament will take place on Wednesday, October 2nd.

All proceeds from the Golf Classic are designated to directly support pets in need.

This year is particularly special for as we celebrate not only the 20th anniversary of the CAF but also the anniversary of the beloved Golf Classic.

These milestones reflect decades of community support and dedication to access to veterinary care and the welfare of pets in Rhode Island!

Dogs can bite for many reasons, including improper care or a lack of socialization. All dogs, even well-trained, gentle dogs, are capable of biting when provoked, especially when eating, sleeping, or caring for puppies. Therefore, it's vitally important to keep both children and dogs safe by preventing dog bites wherever possible.
