SCENARIO: You just found a healthy, happy stray dog wandering around your neighborhood! You've asked your neighbors and no one knows who he is; what do you do now?

ANSWER: Register them on Petco Love Lost! Since switching to this platform back in May, we have seen some incredible reunions. It uses facial recognition technology to help match photos of lost and found pets, getting you directly in contact with the owner once a match is found. AND, did you know you can toggle between English and Spanish?

We recently saw an AMAZING reunion with a kind gentleman and his beloved dog; he didn't have a phone, but he borrowed one, used Petco Love Lost in Spanish, and found that his dog was at PACC. He was at the shelter the same day to pick her up.

We know 1 in 3 pets will be lost some time in their life; help them find their way home. 💙💙

We need dog fosters TODAY!

PACC is receiving an impound of 17 small to medium dogs today, and because we already have 515 dogs in the shelter, we have to get some dogs out to make kennel space for them. Can you foster or adopt a dog TODAY? We especially need help with small and medium dogs as well as puppies.

🆘 𝐂𝐑𝐈𝐓𝐈𝐂𝐀𝐋 🆘

That is our current status. Here's a bullet-point recap of the week so far:
▪️ On Monday, we had 599 animals at the shelter;
▪️ On Tuesday, we took in 47 dogs which was 15 more than we got out;
▪️ On Wednesday, we took in 59 animals, leaving us with 517 dogs in the shelter which is putting us at our breaking point once again;
▪️ We have 89 cats and kittens available for adoption at the shelter;
▪️ We have 1306 animals in foster homes, many are currently available for adoption;
▪️ We have 5 nursing moms with puppies or kittens needing a foster home;
▪️ We have 5 dogs needing a Safety Net Foster and many more asking for help so we can keep them with their families.

We need your help, friends. We can't do this alone.

Adoptions are 🆓 through the end of August for ALL animals at the shelter or in foster AND pets that have been at the shelter for 30 days or longer come with $50 to spend at the Central Pet store for collars, food, toys or whatever you'd like thanks to the Click Family Foundation.

Fosters are also needed. All medium-to-large adult dogs, adult cats, and young kittens (not yet at adoptable age) are eligible to go to foster. If you can provide a place for as little as two weeks, you can help! Learn more or sign up at www.Pima.gov/foster

PACC took in 88 dogs and 43 cats since Saturday morning and is now using pop-up kennels to house incoming dogs.

ACTION NEEDED:

In the event that your pet does go missing this weekend here are some steps you can take to improve the odds of finding them.

🕵️‍♀️ Keep looking: Most lost animals are found within a mile of their home and within the first 24 hours of going missing. Begin your search for them in your neighborhood and places they may be familiar with and slowly expand out from there. Ask neighbors if they have seen your pet.

📋 File a report: Filing a lost animal report will make it possible for us to identify your pet if they get brought it and notify you. There are multiple places to file reports on our Lost & Found page, www.pima.gov/pacclostandfound

🖥 Notify microchip company: Make sure your pet’s microchip company knows the animal is missing using this link, https://www.petmicrochiplookup.org/

🐾 Check the list of animals in our shelter: You know your animals better than anyone else and may be able to identify them before we are able to notify you of their presence. You can check the list of animals in our shelter at www.pima.gov/adopt

🚸 Flyers and Signs: Passing out flyers and posting signs in the area near your home can help strangers who might find your pet get in touch with you. Signs should be large and colorful with a clear picture of your pet and a reliable phone number to contact you at.

WELL THEN..... stay tuned for more posts in the near future with additional ways to keep pets out of shelters!
Day 4- THANK YOU to our out of towners for bringing up 7+ ways to prevent pets from going to shelters. Can we get a pima county resident to come up with 3 more for a free microchip? Hint- they dont all have to do with lost pets, though there are even more ideas about lost pets as well.

Next day: OK was that too hard? Is that why we have too many animals in our local shelters? How about naming 4?

PUBLIC PARTICIPATION!! The first person in Pima County (who doesn’t work/volunteer at a shelter/rescue) who lists 5 ways to PREVENT dogs/cats from going into a shelter gets a free microchip (for your own pet or for a pet owner of your choice).

Help! Foster, volunteer or adopt!!

UPDATE: the good news we got 34 dogs out of the shelter yesterday, Friday. However, we did take in 31 dogs. BUT 3 more dogs got out than came in, so it’s a win for us. We need to open up a minimum of 24 kennels, which is about 48 dogs. Our goal is to send out 50 dogs each day this weekend to accomplish. So please come Adopt, Foster, or Reclaim. Fees are waived.

As of today, Friday, May 20, PACC has 552 dogs in kennels with no additional kennels open for incoming dogs. About 500 of those dogs are large breed dogs. 22 more dogs came in this last week than left. We are in Code Red, which after being in it for almost a year, seems "normal". But, we are teetering on going "Code Blue" which means deadlines will be given to the dogs we don't have room for. PACC does NOT want to do this!

We are once again asking for our communities support to keep us from having to make the difficult decision of euthanizing healthy dogs. We are confident we can keep from getting to that point, BUT WE NEED EVERYONE'S HELP!

Here's how you can help:

ADOPT - if you are looking to add an additional family member, specifically a "big" dog. Come to PACC 12p-7p weekdays and 10a-5p weekends, so we can help you find a pet. Adoption fees are waived for available pets.

FOSTER - we know it's hard right now to commit to another pet long-term. Fostering is the perfect way to help. It gives us homes notes to better match dogs and it gives the dogs a much needed break from the stressful shelter. We need fosters for large breed dogs, with unknown histories with pets and children. LOOK FOR THE OWNER OF FOUND DOGS - if you see a healthy, friendly loose dog please look for its owner. Taking a dog out of it's neighborhood dramatically decreases the chances of reunification. 85% of the strays brought to us were picked up by someone from outside of the dogs neighborhood.

LOST A PET - post throughout your neighborhood, on https://lost.petcolove.org/, and file a lost report at PACC and HSSA. PACC is waiving reclaim fees in most circumstances. So please come get your pet if we have it!

PROVIDE PEER SUPPORT - help your neighbors with finding a lost/found pet, rehoming a beloved pet, or with needed supplies so they can keep their pet.

DONATE - to www.friendsofpacc.org, PACC's non-profit partner, so we can continue to provide resources to the community, and provide for those pets who need extra medical or placement help.

Holy Moly! Yesterday PACC took in almost twice as many pets as we got out (64 dogs and 60 cats)!!

We need foster or adoptive homes for large breed dogs and foster homes for moms with litters and orphaned neonatal kittens!

We had 7 litters of neonatal kittens brought in yesterday!

is almost here, and many people may be decorating with lilies. But if you're a cat parent, please keep lilies out of your home and away from your cat!
If a cat eats even a small amount of a leaf or flower petal or licks a few pollen grains off its fur while grooming, or even laps at the water from the vase, it can result in fatal kidney failure in as little as three days. Keep your kitties safe this Easter - share this with fellow cat parents who may not know.

Rabbit owners, read this!

Pima Animal Care Center is urging owners of pet rabbits to get their outdoor-housed rabbits vaccinated against Rabbit Hemorrhagic Disease Virus now that the disease is appearing in rabbits locally.

Rabbit Hemorrhagic Disease Virus, also known as RHDV2, is an introduced virus causing rampant, swift death in domestic pet rabbits and wild rabbits in the U.S. and Europe.

“This is the third year that the virus has been detected in Southern Arizona, but it’s the first time rabbits coming through PACC have tested positive,” said Director of Veterinary Services, Dr. Jennifer Wilcox.

A group of 15 pet rabbits were recently surrendered to PACC. Despite rapid vaccination, all rabbits from this property died. RHDV causes fever, lethargy, hemorrhage, seizures, and acute death in rabbits. The incubation period is 1-3 days.

This disease is not contagious to other animals or humans. RHDV2 has been detected in pet rabbits, rabbit food and wild rabbit populations throughout the United States and Europe. Southern Arizona now lists the disease as “endemic,” meaning it can’t be eradicated.

The virus lasts for months in contaminated environments, even in extreme heat. It can be spread by any secretions of infected rabbits, plus via contaminated food, equipment, insects, native predators, and boots and other husbandry items.

Dr. Wilcox said the time to get your pet rabbit vaccinated is now.

“So far, the number of infected rabbits has been fairly small, but we want pet owners to take precautions, because this virus is deadly,” she said. “We have not seen any rabbits survive RHDV2. Ideally, all pet rabbits should be vaccinated twice and housed indoors.”

Monica Dangler, Director of Animal Services, said the disease is temporarily making an impact on operations.

“Right now, we aren’t able to take in rabbits due to RVDV2,” she said. “We are working swiftly on our vaccine protocol so that we can begin to take them in again.”
Rabbit owners in need of assistance should reach out to the PACC Pet Support Center for help.

“Bottom line is that all rabbit owners should get their pet vaccinated twice as soon as they can in order to prevent heartbreak,” Dangler said.

Select private exotic animal clinics have the ability to vaccinate pet rabbits for RVDV2. Cost will vary depending on location.
