Attention! Attention! Adoptable Pups!

As you may already know, the shelter is limited on space until they rebuild. Space is prioritized for the dangerous/aggressive animals the staff gets calls about however they've had a few dogs that came in through abandonment cases and those pups are now cleared for adoption.

Adoptions are appointment only for approved applicants. YOU MUST SUBMIT AN APPLICATION to be processed prior to meeting the dogs. The shelter is utilizing foster homes and have limited staffing so you will not be able to show up and request a meet and greet. The link to the online form is below:

https://form.jotform.com/SJBPAnimalShelter/adoption-application

Adoption fee is $130.00. All animals are sterilized, vaccinated, microchipped, Heartworm tested, on Heartworm and Flea Prevention and have had a wellness exam. Please share and lets try to find these great dogs new homes!

Quick little update on Riggs.....

He sleeps in his little girl's room every night and is a total couch potato during the day. He has one week until he's hopefully released by his surgeon. His mobility is great and he's super happy with his foster family. They love him as much as he loves them and he's staying there forever.

Went in for the last bandage change. 10 more days and he gets radiographs to see how his bone is healing. Considering he thinks he's perfectly fine and should be able to do what he wants we are hoping the 10 day rads show a callous and we can take his splint off. Keeping this boy calm and confined has been a challenge to say the least!

Would anyone be willing to foster kittens for 9 days? The shelter has an amazing transport opportunity and so many residents have kittens that need to go. If anyone can foster temporarily please send us a message or comment here. Supplies will be provided.

Today is the day. Stella will have surgery. If you have a moment please send this girl a prayer or some good vibes. This is her only chance and we are praying for a successful surgery and perfect recovery. Thank you to so many for giving her this chance. And a big thank you for Mardi Paws, South Paws and her surgeon for jumping in without hesitation!

📣Where do your donations to Scott's Wish x Mardi Paws for go❓ They go toward saving lives of critically ill shelter pets like Stella. Dr. Newton held off on surgery today to get her a little stronger, she's scheduled for surgery Thursday!💗

This precious pup surrendered to the St John Parish Shelter critically ill, will get her much-needed surgery very soon by boarded surgeon Dr. Jenifer Newton and her team at South Paws Veterinary Surgical Specialists. They are getting her hydrated and a bit stronger- we'll keep you updated. 💗

We're grateful a supporter reached out on behalf of Friends of the St. John Parish Animal Shelter who were desperately trying to raise the funds for the lifesaving surgery. They are such a compassionate and dedicated group, but raising thousands of dollars twice in a week was difficult and they were coming up on a tough choice.

They did have a supporter make a very generous donation towards the angel's care, but it wasn't enough.

This 9-week-old puppy was surrendered when her owner took her for emergency care and she was diagnosed with Persistent Right Aortic Arch (PRAA), a congenital defect where an embryonic branch of the aorta wraps around the esophagus and puts pressure on the tube.

This requires surgery or she will die. Her food is unable to pass the obstruction in her esophagus and trachea. She weighs only 4lbs and should weigh at least 10lbs.

Unfortunately, none of the rescue's they contacted were able to step up to take this puppy due to the cost of the surgery, and we're grateful they reached out to us!

There is not a day that goes by that we aren't helping an injured angel, thank you for considering a gift to Scott's Wish for GiveNOLA Day.

With everyone a volunteer, and no office overhead, it goes directly to helping dogs like baby Stella.

We aren't able to share posts from other pages here .. not sure what the technical issue is there but please see below for the update on the sweet 9 week old GSD puppy we posted about this weekend!

We are so thankful for the people who made it possible to give this girl her only chance at life. ❤️

****Update: 05/05/24 7:30p.m. Stella is being admitted tomorrow to South Paws. She will have surgery there thanks to Mardi Paws and a very generous anonymous donor. We are blown away by being able to save two very critical animals our local shelter stepped up to help. Thank you all so much! ***

This 9 week old puppy was surrendered when her owner took her for emergency care and she was diagnosed with PRAA. This requires surgery or she will die. Her food is unable to pass the obstruction in her esophagus and thrachea so she's now being fed frequent small meals of critical care and water mixed into a aludge. She weighs only 4lbs and should weigh at least 10lbs. We have found a vet who has generously discounted the surgery from $5,000 to $3,000.

Unfortunately none of the rescue's contacted were able to step up to take this puppy due to the cost of surgery so we would like to help her. We didn't cover the surgery for Riggs so we would need to raise the funds to do this surgery. Please consider donating.

Checks can be dropped off at the shelter, made payable to FSJAS or we have PayPal: [email protected].

Riggs says, Happy Sunday. He's not the best at taking it easy and insists on standing on his own and roaming the house unless someone is sitting close enough to touch. After being abandoned he has a slight case of separation anxiety that will have to be worked through. But, he's happy to be alive and loved!

This boy is doing well! His foster dad has named him Riggs and he had a restful first night. He has two teenagers and a younger child to love on him non-stop which has been food for his sweet soul. They say he is so grateful and gives unlimited kisses. Thanks to Traci Musso for the sling that is now making potty walks MUCH easier!

Again, we couldn't have saved this boy without the love shown by so many of you, the shelter, veterinarians, and techs who jumped right in and started him on his path to wellness and those who chose to donate. ❤️ Without your donations saving these harder medical cases would be impossible. Thank you!

He's been discharged and is waiting to go to his foster home. He'll be in a splint and bandages for 3-4 weeks. Multiple vet visits. Then physical therapy. So far he's been an excellent patient and very kind no matter what type of pain he has experienced. Poor guy still looks worried and a bit shell shocked but hopefully that passes as he settles in and realizes he's finally safe.

If anyone has an x-pen they could donate or loan please let us know. We didn't raise all the funds needed for surgery and that would help keep him confined to a smaller area at his foster home.

Does anyone have an exercise pen or would want to donate one for our guy? He needs a confined space and a wire crate won't work bc he needs to be walked with a sling and getting him up and out of a wire kennel would be impossible.

04/25 morning update: Sweet boy is doing well. He's already trying to get up and walk. He will be monitored until around 3:00 p.m. then will be picked up from the clinic. We'll get some new photos sent to us and make a new post with more details on surgery, after care, etc. once we have that afternoon update.

2:45 p.m. update: Surgery is finished. He is in recovery. There was a lot of damage so it will be 3-4 months before he's healed. He will also need PT so we will get a quote for that and go from there. We will make a post tomorrow with more details. A huge thank you to everyone that made this possible!!!

11:00 a.m. update 04/24/2024:

We are just shy of $2600.00. He's in surgery now. Will update as soon as we get the call that he's in recovery.

$2220.00 raised so far. Thank you to those who have donated and an extra special thank you to Mercy's momma for her extremely generous donation! 🥰

Update: $3800 to plate his broken left femur and to get the right hip back into socket as it's dislocated. He is also on antibiotics and pain meds for the open wounds and abrasions. If we can raise some funds today he can have surgery tomorrow. Please consider donating!

We'd like to help the shelter save this boy. He was dumped at the boat launch in Ruddock but disappeared before the ACO's could get there. This morning someone spotted him curled in a little ball against the guardrail of I-55 at mile marker 7. He has a clean break and a dislocated hip. We are waiting on an estimate then will post an updated goal for fundraising.

Our PayPal is linked at the top of our page. Please consider donating. ❤️

When you dump a dog in Ruddock this is what happens. They search for you and make their way onto the bridge, get hit, and lay there and suffer. We can and should do better than this.

Good Morning!

We wanted to take a moment to educate everyone on how you get your animals back after it goes to the shelter.

We've seen quite a few posts regarding a dog that was recently trapped by the shelter and thought we would share what we learned from the staff when we called to ask for specifics on how someone can get their animal back. You may need to call the shelter and speak to a staff member if you have additional questions.

When a dog is "impounded" or picked up for being loose in the community the hold starts the day it was picked up. It does not matter what time of say. Day 1 is the impound day.

There is a 5 day hold including the date of impound. If your dog is picked up Sunday you have until Thursday to complete the "redemption process."

To claim ownership you must have proof the animal is yours. The ordinance also states you must also have a rabies vaccination through a licensed vet for your pet.

In addition to the above you must pay impound fees which were set by the Council. Your animals running loose is actually against the law and paying the fees at the shelter keep you from getting a summons for court.

**** This is the important part: All of this must be done before close of business on the 5th day of the hold.

All appointments are scheduled prior to 4:00 p.m.
After 4:00 the few workers at the shelter are finishing up tasks with the animals, locking buildings, etc. They are not typically in the temporary office trailer in the front of the location.

Staff has no idea you called unless you leave a message.

With limited space shelter staff is continuously working on transfers to other groups locally and nationally to safely move animals out in order to avoid euthanasia.

There are only 3 employees that handle the calls, cleaning, etc so again, you will need to leave a message otherwise they do not know you have called.

All parish ordinances are available on the parish website for anyone to review.

Please put an identification tag on your animal or have them chipped this way you can be called the moment someone finds your pet. This can prevent your animal from going to the shelter in the first place.

Also, leash walk your pet. Do not let them run all over your neighborhood thinking they will come home. Anything can happen. They can get hit by a passing car, be attacked by another dog, stolen by someone with bad intentions, or simply get turned around and lose their way home.

We hope this helps. There are a lot of state laws and local laws that are in place for your pets and the shelter staff is required to follow those laws. Everytime we ask questions we learn something new and we've been working with the shelter since the hoarding case in 2017.

Introducing Kamali, which means having divine protection. Kamali was hit by a car on Airline Hwy. She was picked up and appeared to be so severely injured that she wouldn't make it to a vet clinic for evaluation. But, here she is a few days later with deep lacerations, swelling, and some soreness. Kamali is shy. She especially loves one shelter employee who initially had to hand feed her to earn her trust. She is curious of new people but hesitant. She has not once been aggressive or even grumpy when being examined or handled following her injuries.

The shelter would love to find a foster home for Kamali. She is on oral medication for her wounds that is given twice daily. She needs a quiet place where she can recover and gain confidence. Prior to being hit Kamali was running loose and couldn't be caught so we have no idea how long she has been on her own. She is approximately 1 year old.

Please contact the shelter if you are interested in fostering. 985-651-7387. You may need to leave a message as there are only 3 staff members and they have no way of knowing someone called while they are out of the office if a message isn't left. There isn't a receptionist so please, please leave a message when you call.
