Fiona has proven that rescue dogs have so much love, loyalty, and kindness to share if only given the chance. We are so proud of her and her mom, Angie—one of our amazing staff members—for this incredible achievement. Together, they’re an inspiring team!

Special thanks to Kelly Alderson St Marie, the dedicated trainer, tester, observer, and volunteer, along with the Alliance of Therapy Dogs for providing the exceptional training and guidance Fiona needed to succeed. Here are some golden nuggets from one of our favorite training throwbacks: 1️⃣ Treats as a Compass: Guide your furry friend by placing treats where you want them - by your side. This encourages them to stay close without the need for a tight leash. 🍖➡️🐾 2️⃣ Practice Makes Perfect: Choose a familiar, low-distraction setting for initial practice. Our star pupil began in his own front yard, focusing on the walk rather than new distractions. 🏡✨ 3️⃣ Leash Etiquette: Keep the leash slack at all times. The goal is for neither you nor your dog to pull on the leash, creating a stress-free walking environment. 🎗️➰ 4️⃣ Start with Short Successes: Even walking a few paces back and forth is a big win. Celebrate these small steps and keep the energy positive! 🎉🚶‍♂️ 5️⃣ Pacing with Your Pup: Dogs naturally move faster than we do, averaging 4 mph. Calvert Dog Academy was started in 2019 by Elizabeth Ashley. We love all dogs here and want to meet yours! We offer classes, private coaching, and hands-free daily training!

We are also serious about staying up-to-date with the latest in the science of animal behavior and learning. We are the only dog training business in the county to hold certifications from: Fear Free, Doggone Safe, and the Academy for Dog Trainers. In addition, we offer certification for the AKC Canine Good Citizen test.
