Rewinding to a valuable lesson that’s always worth sharing: successful leash walking is a dance of patience, guidance, and mutual respect. Here are some golden nuggets from one of our favorite training throwbacks:
1️⃣ Treats as a Compass: Guide your furry friend by placing treats where you want them - by your side. This encourages them to stay close without the need for a tight leash. 🍖➡️🐾
2️⃣ Practice Makes Perfect: Choose a familiar, low-distraction setting for initial practice. Our star pupil began in his own front yard, focusing on the walk rather than new distractions. 🏡✨
3️⃣ Leash Etiquette: Keep the leash slack at all times. The goal is for neither you nor your dog to pull on the leash, creating a stress-free walking environment. 🎗️➰
4️⃣ Start with Short Successes: Even walking a few paces back and forth is a big win. Celebrate these small steps and keep the energy positive! 🎉🚶♂️
5️⃣ Pacing with Your Pup: Dogs naturally move faster than we do, averaging 4 mph. Start with a quick pace to match your dog’s energy, gradually introducing varied speeds as you both advance. 🏃💨
