Annie's Orphans - Durango, CO We are Durango's only no-kill dog shelter. We're located at 1630 CR 214, Durango, CO 81303. We are a Durango is a very dog friendly community.
(9)

We began our work in 1985 as a home for retired sled dogs, but quickly turned into a full-fledged, all-breed rescue incorporated as a not-for profit foundation in 1997. We have a maximum capacity of approximately 70 dogs, but try to keep our numbers under 50 in winter so that we can give all our residents the care and attention they each deserve. We are a safe haven for the abandoned, neglected an

d abused dog population from throughout the greater Four Corners area. Our mission is to offer these dogs and those labeled as “difficult-to-adopt” by typical shelters, a refuge were they can live safely, comfortably, happily, and healthily until each can find his/her special person and forever home. Since opening our doors, we’ve found homes for approximately 2,000 dogs. Someone once said “it’s not IF you have a dog in Durango, it’s how many dogs you have”. In caring for, readying for adoption and adopting out dogs, we believe we are doing a great service to the Durango community - human and canine alike. We also help reduce pet overpopulation by spaying, neutering and providing medical care for all dogs prior to placement in their new homes.

GIGANTIC THANK YOU!🙏🏼
We wish to thank the Greater Good Charity for supplying dog food, treats, and other pet related products to shelters world wide. 🥰 And we especially want to thank Angela for giving us the chance to get both dry and wet dog food and cat food for the animals in our shelter. ♥️ With donations significantly down and prices significantly up, it has been extremely hard to keep our animals fed with quality food. 😢 So without Greater Good Charity,Angela at Rez Dog Rescue and Aimee and Kegan Brennan, we’re not real sure what we would have been able to do! 🐶
These are photos of their very generous donations to us! 🙀🐕

We also, want to thank Aimee and Kegan Brennan for making the trips to Moriarity, New Mexico, several times to pick up the food. They have donated their time, gas and money to keep our dogs and cats fed. They are the best.

Thank you so much from the very bottom of our hearts. You are true heroes in our eyes! 👍

PLEASE!!!

Please do not hurt me or my mom. ♥️🦊♥️
We just temporarily moved to the neighborhood so we could be “safe.”
If you have suddenly seen a fox in the yard near your home, there is a good reason for this.
It is denning season. Between the end of March and early April, a mother fox will give birth to between 4 and 5 kits (a baby fox is called a kit).
A coyote will often find a fox den, dig out the babies, and kill them.
A mother fox knows this and will frequently choose a den site close to people, away from where coyotes generally go.
A fox will often den under a porch, shed, garage, barn, or side of a hill, trying to keep her little family safe.
Please offer them a short-term rental because this is not a permanent situation.
If you are lucky enough to see how beautiful an adult fox is, or witness the kits playing (at a distance of course), you will be glad you did!
It is not uncommon for Red Foxes to change dens several times during the season, so you may not see them for long.
Kits are slow to develop and will not leave the den until they are about a month old. Foxes do not live in a den year-round, only when a mother has babies.
During the summer as the kits grow older, you will see less and less of them, and by September everyone will have packed up and moved on. Please do not call a service to “relocate them”, they will often be killed.
If you see a fox during the day, it does not mean she is rabid. A mother fox works tirelessly to feed her kits and will often be out during daylight hours foraging for food.
Foxes are omnivores, generally feeding on berries, grasses, and small rodents. They are solitary and prefer to be left alone.
They do not want to hunt and eat your children, mate with your dog, or kill your cat.
A fox just wants a place to raise her family safely, please allow her to do that.

Meet Vanilla!!
He is actually anything but vanilla, he is such a sweet, happy dog. We’d love to get him in a home as soon as possible. 🏡
Vanilla is 7 months old. Good with dogs, not sure about cats, good with kids. 🐶 Being a puppy, he’s still on the rowdy side so we suggest no small children because they will be bowled over by his exuberance. 💥 He is such a great dog. We cannot say enough good things about him and his siblings for that matter. Vanilla would make a great hiking dog. He’s very social And he’s on his way to being potty trained. 🚽 We know one of you out there wants this sweet treat.
If you’d like to meet vanilla or his siblings, please text Anna at 970-759-8811 to make an appointment. You will fall in love. 🥰 That’s a guarantee.
Note: the first few pictures are of how he looks now. We also threw in some tiny puppy pictures so you could see what he looked like when he came into the shelter. There’s also a photo of him with his siblings.
Please share this post and let’s get this cutie pie adopted! 👍

Day one at Annies. We are now 6 months old and we don’t know why no one wants us. The one in the center and one hiding behind her are in their forever homes. Please open up your hearts and homes for these wonderful babies.

These are four of the six that Aimee picked off the side of a highway in New Mexico when they were about 5 or 6 weeks old. Katy has worked with them and they’ve got a good start on house training. They’re good with other dogs. I don’t know why anybody would dump these beautiful little babies on the side of the road. Unfortunately, two of the babies did not survive the traffic before Aimee could get down there to rescue them.
PLEASE TEXT 970 759 8811 for appointment 🐕🐕🐕💜

IMPORTANT - BEWARE - SHARE THIS POST!

Beware of foxtails while out and about with your dogs! Foxtails have barbed razor-sharp needles that are dangerous to your dog. If you are exposed, thoroughly inspect the hot spots (ears, nose, eyes, underbelly, between toe pads).
- Foxtails can go up the nose and migrate to the brain.
- Embedded foxtails can cause pain and even death in extreme cases
- Pets with long fur and long ears are especially prone to getting foxtails
- Foxtails move in one direction. They dig in, and they do not come out on their own.
- Foxtails love paws and can easily embed between toes.
- Foxtails can dig into any part of the body, and they don't dissolve.
- Foxtails pieces can easily be inhaled & puncture a lung!

We have an ODD REQUEST! 😁
We need a lot of these clean, thick plastic water bottles. 💧 we can’t use those really flimsy plastic water bottles. They need to be the thicker plastic. And these bottles have no ridges so the ice slides out easily. Let us explain why. With the incredibly warm temperatures we’ve been having, our dogs’ water bowls are warming up much more quickly than usual. And they don’t like warm water. ‼️ We plan on filling these with water, freezing them, squeezing the ice out, and floating them in their water bowls to keep the water cold as long as possible. 👍 Ice cubes melt too quickly, so we believe this is a good solution. We will cut the tops of the bottles off so the ice can slide out in one piece, then we’ll refill them and start freezing them for the next day. We’ve tried it and it works. If you have any clean bottles you can donate to us, we would appreciate it. 💕 Please text Anna at 970-759-8811 for pick up or drop off. You can also drop off in town. Please spread the word. Thanks!🥰
