Annie's Orphans - Durango, CO Durango Colorado's only no-kill dog shelter. 🐶
Providing a safe haven for dogs until their forever homes can be found. 💜🐾

We began our work in 1985 as a home for retired sled dogs, but quickly turned into a full-fledged, all-breed rescue incorporated as a not-for profit foundation in 1997. We have a maximum capacity of approximately 70 dogs, but try to keep our numbers under 50 in winter so that we can give all our residents the care and attention they each deserve. We are a safe haven for the abandoned, neglected an

d abused dog population from throughout the greater Four Corners area. Our mission is to offer these dogs and those labeled as “difficult-to-adopt” by typical shelters, a refuge were they can live safely, comfortably, happily, and healthily until each can find his/her special person and forever home. Since opening our doors, we’ve found homes for approximately 2,000 dogs. Durango is a very dog friendly community. Someone once said “it’s not IF you have a dog in Durango, it’s how many dogs you have”. In caring for, readying for adoption and adopting out dogs, we believe we are doing a great service to the Durango community - human and canine alike. We also help reduce pet overpopulation by spaying, neutering and providing medical care for all dogs prior to placement in their new homes.

Please helps us find a foster/home for this loving (likely dumped) pup!

A wonderful woman working at a hospital in Fort Defiance was befriended by this sweet guy. In order to keep him safe and warm she has been sharing the cab of her truck with him at night. She has 6 dogs of her own and can not keep him for fear her dogs may attack him.

She wants to give him a chance at a home and will bring him with her back to the Cortez/Durango after her last shift.

Best guess is he is 6months old, very loving and has been good with other dogs in the area (she has video).

Meet Freya!

Freya is a sweet, loyal, playful girl that has lived in a home all her life. She is well trained (sit, stay, heel) and is leash trained and easy to walk. She loves other dogs and people.

Freya is currently a roommate te with Teddy (our Rotweiler mix also for adoption) and they love each others company, playing and relaxing.

Freya does follow her herding instincts and when left alone would jump the fence and chase deer and neighboring cattle. This of course put her in danger and her previous owner did not want to see her shot. Freya came from a loving home but they did not have the resources to keep her due to this issue.

Freya has not made any attempts to jump any of our kennels or yards so we think she just needed the company. She is a wonderful dog!

She will be 5 years old on Valentine’s Day 2026.

Just what we wanted for the holidays…a warm loving home for one of our dogs.

But that’s not all…make that 2! Cagney and Lacy now wake up in a warm house, a handmade breakfast and lots of love from their new parents. Best of all, they are together.

Thank you for adopting!

Lavinia - 1 year old female (medium size)

This girl is so sweet, is easy to walk, loving, shy at first but warms up quickly. She loves to run and has the cutest floppy ears that bounce when she walks.

She deserves a warm and loving home. Come meet this sweet girl. Text Annie’s for an appointment 970-759-8811.

This Sunday, join us at the Christmas Market at Durango Pet Resort. Stop by our table, ask about the jewelry, and see if you can find your favorite breed captured in these timeless designs.

These aren’t just pieces of jewelry. Each one was hand-carved by Annie and cast by Bill, created with love, patience, and a shared commitment to helping animals.

This jewelry played a real role in keeping Annie’s K-9 Orphans alive in its earliest years. It helped pay vet bills, put food in bowls, and bridge the gaps during times when there was simply no other option. Handling each piece feels like touching the history of this rescue and the dedication that built it.

It has been years since this incredible collection has been brought out and offered for sale. As we celebrate 40 years of No-Kill rescue, revisiting these pieces during the holiday season feels especially meaningful. Every single one carries a story of craftsmanship, sacrifice, compassion, and hope.

You’ll also find our creative display of adoptable dogs and be able to speak to our volunteers about any of the dogs that interest you.

Ways to support Annie’s K-9 Orphans:
• Sign up to volunteer
• Fill out an adoption application and schedule a visit
• Make a donation to support the dogs still waiting
• Take home a one-of-a-kind piece of jewelry that shows your love for animals and helps carry this legacy forward.

This isn’t just a sale.
It’s history, heart, and 40 years of rescue still shining.
