Dream TEAM Show Update:

Entries have opened and are coming in – THANK YOU FOR YOUR SUPPORT! We have received some initial questions so wanted to ANSWER them here. If you have additional questions after reading all the comments and responses, please add it to the comments and we will answer there so everyone has the benefit of both Q&A.

1. GATHER YOUR TEAM:

*Teams of 3 or 4 riders. If your team has 4 we will drop the lowest score for team awards calculations

*If you don’t have a TEAM but would like to be on one we can put you together with other individual entries
to make up a team or can add you to one that has 3 members to fill it out.

* Your TEAM can be comprised of DIFFERENT LEVELS of riders and can have ONE Professional.

2. JOIN THE FUN! (suggestions below are encouraged but not required!)

*Come up with a TEAM NAME.

* Coordinating TEAM OUTFITS for your team and horses are fun and can be worn when you compete.
Please refer to the USDF rulebook Tack section if you have questions on what is/isn’t allowed.

*TEAM Stall door signs (easy to hang and removable that DO NOT cause any damage!) should be OK. Please “vet them” with show management when you check in (before you put them up).

3. DIVISIONS & SCORING:

a) Each rider enters a Division(s) that includes two tests, one ridden on Saturday and one on Sunday.
NOTE: Maximum Divisions entered per competitor is 2 for the Show.

b) Professionals and Western Dressage riders will have their own divisions (“P” and “W”).

c) INDIVIDUAL Scoring: The Division test scores for each rider will be combined to calculate results and placings for Individual competitors against their peers who are riding in the same Division.

d) TEAM Scoring: Teams will be placed into separate GROUPS (up to 6 teams per GROUP) by the Show Secretary. Teams are given a point value based on each team member's rides. No team will have an unfair advantage. The total of each Team's points will determine their placing in the GROUP for TEAM AWARDS.

4. OPEN RIDES: Open rides will be filled only after all team rides are scheduled and IF SPACE IS AVAILABLE. If you sign up for an open ride, but it cannot be scheduled, you will receive a refund for that class only. Any OPEN rides will be filled on a first come first served basis determined by the postmark on your entry, so send your entry in today!!

5. SATURDAY DINNER & ENTERTAINMENT:

* Saturday Night Dinner- Please order tickets for you, your family and friends on your entry so we know
how many to prepare for. Dinner will include chicken, pulled pork, salads, baked beans and a drink.

*There will be a STICK PONY COMPETITION before Dinner which is open to anyone who would like to join
in the fun! Please sign up in the show office for individual, pas de deux or quadrille! You and your stick
partner are welcome to ride a standard test or create your own freestyle, with or without music! Limit 1.5
minutes per entry.

6. VOLUNTEERS: We will post the Sign Up Genius link on this page on JULY 10th. Please SHARE THE LINK!
Volunteers who sign up for 2 shifts will receive a THANK YOU gift from Show Management. Those who sign up for more than 2 shifts will get an additional THANK YOU!

Great information!

This is about the problem I posted about last week that riders are increasingly ignoring. So many people commented with misinformation about the differences between striding over and jumping an obstacle, I thought I'd better deal with it in a deeper way. The top two top images show uneven takeoff, meaning both horses are jumping more off one foot than the other. Not a big deal if you are jumping low jumps in an arena with good footing and heights under three feet.

Uneven takeoffs are so common a jumping flaw today that it is becoming the standard. To eliminate this problem and to have safer jumps, you must school your horse on striding in the approach, which involves extension and collection, such that your horse squares up and takes off using the entire strength of both legs.

The set up in the lower picture is "the Box" in yellow, which is the takeoff area. Using a garden rake before each jump to smooth the box. we jump and after we examine the hoofprints to see how the horse took off. What we see in the picture is approximately a 2' 8" high jump with an 8' Box in front of it made with jump rails. This is for an average size horse. We vary the depth of the box to the jump based on the size of the horse or pony and the height of the jump. If you are a trainer or advanced rider, you can use this set up for very green horses as well.

Riding with Relaxation, Rhythm/Tempo, Straightness and Impulsion in the approach, we ride our horse into the Box. Some horses will at first read the box as a bounce, and while that is OK, we want the horse to stride into the Box. After each jump, look for the hoof prints in the Box to be together and parallel to the jump's ground pole line.

The first results will usually be uneven hoof prints. If the hoof prints are uneven, there are two choices of action. (1) Bring the horse to the jump in a steadier approach. Two strides out from the box, give a very slight half halt as a preparatory command for the last stride before the Box without destroying the rhythm. Then look to see if the takeoff hoof prints are more even than before. A light half halt should collect your horse and get him more under himself, and thus more squared up for takeoff. Don't forget to rake the box after every jump.

The other option (2) is more for greener horses, but also for what I call the "jock" horses that are not much for thinking. Instead of exploring variations of the use of the aids, the (2) option is more physical. By using physical changes to the box and to the jump, we work more with varying the context of the jump.

For example, we might make the box shorter to the jump, which tends to collect the horse as a half halt might. A smaller tighter box requires tighter movements. Another possible change is we might raise the jump height in increments to find a threshold where the horse feels the need to square up. You can also combine changing the depth of the box and the height of the jump but be careful because this is for more experienced horses. Word of caution. If a horse begins to plough into the jump knocking down rail all the time, the horse is not ready for this exercise.

All of the above is not for beginner riders or inexperienced intermediate riders. This process requires feel, something that takes time to develop in a rider. In the end, it is the rider, not the horse, that makes the decision between striding or jumping over an obstacle. We cue that choice with our seat and overall position in the approach. This requires experience.

My point is to counter the misinformation that "some horses only stride over jumps". We need to train for both. Striding over jumps adds speed. Squaring up and jumping with both hind legs adds power and precision. Good riders can train their horses to do both on command as required by circumstances.
