PEARLS BEFORE SWINE
Many dog breeders spend a lifetime following a dream. Those who are passionate about their breed serve an apprenticeship studying the intricacies of their individual breed and the journeys that past generations have taken to lay the foundations on which they in turn have built.
Truly dedicated breeders do not see all their geese as swans. They recognise their dogs’ failings (though they might not shout them from the rooftops) and plan their breeding programmes accordingly. When exhibiting, the real breeders know what they are showing. They can assess a class instantly, determine which dogs are their competition, acknowledge which dogs could possibly beat theirs and be confident about those who could never do so. That said, there will be occasions when they have a special dog and they know they have no real competition.
In the current climate for a variety of reasons the level of knowledge and ability on judging panels varies dramatically. The number of real breed specialists and broad-based stockman all-rounders is diminishing as the elderly pass on and systems change. The chances are, today, that many of the old-school breeder/exhibitors will frequently find themselves showing their dogs under judges whose understanding of their breed is far less than their own. They are at their mercy. They give these judges an entry as they hope to win and they themselves know what their dog deserves.
Nothing can be more frustrating than showing a dog that is a standout winner and being beaten by an inferior dog, yet it happens time and again … and there is no recourse. Stating the obvious afterwards is dismissed as “sour grapes” and heinous crimes are explained away by “a matter of opinion”, but as the late, great Nigel Aubrey Jones said “Some things are a matter of opinion, others are a matter of fact”.
