Hinterland Homestead Our homestead consists of several chicken varieties, rabbits, quail and a couple turkeys. Outside is my happy place and I love growing things :)

We also have fruit trees, bushes and vines and are working on expanding our vegetable and herb garden.

Chicken Math

This all started like many chicken stories do, with a small box full of pullets from the local feed store. We brought those original 4 home with nothing more to house them in than a large plastic tote. My husband and I built our first coop over the next couple weekends and our kids named them all Baby, Sophie, Cinderella and Lulu. We managed to add 2 more pullets to the mix, Modine and Joan. These 6 grew and we started getting eggs! The novelty still hasn’t worn of and I sometimes will check for eggs 3-4 times a day.

As I read more and learned about the different color eggs I wanted to add some Black Copper Marans to our flock. The more I read about all the different breeds and looked at where to get them the more I became convinced that I could in fact raise chickens. As a Biology major I love all things science and animals and genetics. And so. with my husbands blessing, jumped in feet first and bought 40 chicks from Greenfire farm. I started with Black Copper Marans, 55 flowery Hens and Blue Isbars.

I love being outdoors and working with animals and Hinterland Homestead allows me to do all these things will being able to provide some for my family. I am grateful everyday when I look around me and see all that I have.
