Happy 4th!
Our annual Independence Day reminder for pet owners. Permission to share granted.
Plan ahead of time to ensure your pets remain safe throughout fireworks season. Many shelters become busy during the Independence Day season with recovered dogs that have fled their homes in panic. The time to develop a plan is before pets experience fireworks-related stress and potentially engage in blind flight attempts to escape the noise and percussion. A multi-pronged approach starting with management is recommended. Some tips that may help:
* If you live in an area where fireworks are likely to be experienced by your dog (s) or cat(s), you should identify an area of the house where the noise level can be maintained at a minimum.
*Be proactive. Consult with a trainer to learn ways to desensitize your pet to loud noises.
* Use of background noise such as radios or televisions can be utilized. It is a good idea to acclimate your pet to this area prior to Independence Day so that it is not so foreign to them. Be sure to implement appropriate measures to prevent your pet from fleeing in a panic as fear can result in very determined attempts.
* Be sure your dog is microchipped and that the microchip company's database has your accurate contact information. Also be sure your dog has appropriate identification tags and if travelling, utilize temporary tags that provide your immediate contact information.
* Use of air conditioning not only provides climate control but also helps to drown out some of the fireworks.
* As fireworks usually peak after dark, it's a good idea to get your dog fully pottied prior to getting them secured for the duration of the celebration.
* If possible and safe to do so prior to the evening hours, engage in exercise in an attempt to fatigue your dog.
* If you have to take your dog out while fireworks are active, use a leash and a properly fitted martingale collar that helps prevent the dog from slipping out of it.
* Ensure everyone who visits your home is made aware of your plans to keep your pets safe. Place reminders such as taped up signs on doors and remember that alcohol can impair the better judgement of your guests.
* If you think your pet may require medicinal help to get through the season, consult your veterinarian early, inquire how the specific medication works. Also inquire whether a trial run(s) may be advised.
Preplan now so your pet(s) can have a pleasant 4th of July.
Good idea to find out which day your town’s fireworks are taking place… please be careful and keep them safe!❤️
TIPS TO KEEP YOUR PETS SAFE DURING FIREWORKS!
Keep pets indoors: Ensure all windows and doors are closed.
Update identification: Make sure your pet’s is wearing a collar and their tags have up-to-date information. Register their microchip with correct address & phone number.
Muffle loud noises: Close windows and turn on the TV, radio, fans, or air conditioners.
Provide distractions: Keep toys and long-lasting treats (like stuffed Kong’s) available in their safe space (crate, bedroom, etc.).
Early exercise: Potty and exercise your pets on a leash early in the day when fireworks are less likely.
Use secure collars: Consider a martingale-style collar and slip leash to prevent your dog from panicking and slipping out of their collar if fireworks go off.

It’s that time of year…
The black flies are back! We get a lot of calls this time of year about strange rashes and lesions on our patients' stomach and groin region. While many people think these bites look like tick bites because of a bullseye effect, often times these welts are just black fly bites.
Black flies prefer to bite areas with less hair. The good news is that while they leave behind the tell-tale sign of a bright red circle, the bites themselves don't generally bother dogs. Also keep in mind that black flies don't carry the the same health risks as many other biting insects (mosquitos, ticks, fleas, etc).

Later in the afternoon Milly began to feel better, had a nice grooming From Hollie and felt well enough to eat a late lunch. Hoping she feels a lot better by tomorrow morning and that her laboratory results are fine.
Mildred started out the morning frisky, playing with her toys and ”helping” Jo fold laundry. Later in the morning she vomited a few times, had a fever, and had to put up with being treated like one of our patients. She had x-rays, bloodwork, and a couple of injections to help with her upset stomach. Needless to say she was a little disappointed with us. she sat on the printer and gave us some dirty looks. We were all concerned about her, And gave her lots of attention.
