Foot surgeries done and healed and back to work. I can still only do torts 40 pounds or less but at least it's something. ALL rescue turtles and tortoises have been adopted! Just spending time with the sanctuary critters......

04/03/2022

Thank You Judy P. And family for your extremely generous donation!

04/03/2022

Changes for 2022.
Due to health issues of my own..... intakes will only consist of tortoises under 40 pounds. Please be honest about weight because if turtle / tortoise is not within weight limit it will be turned away.

I can and will do surrender and adoption transportation. Cost due to current gas prices will vary for each trip.

AZ Sonoran and Mojave Tortoises must go thru AZ Game and Fish Department.

If you would like to make a donation we are on Venmo or paypal.me/NPhxTortRescue. Thank you for your support!

It's been 2 weeks since I had to say goodbye to my sweet boy Scooter.... He's getting used to his Oklahoma life at Dr Sheila's Funny Farm. He's been inside under his heat lamp mostly but has come out for shell scratches with the grandkids. He's getting so much attention now that is more than just the 1 on 1 with me. I do miss him horribly but it was the right thing to do to give him a happy life. Soon spring will be here and there will be a buffet of grass, dandelion, and weeds. They are working with him to play with a ball ⚽ there is a ton of animal playmates to meet and play with as well.

Tomorrow morning at 7 a.m. Scooter will begin his journey to Dr Sheila's Funny Farm in Oklahoma and will be transported by Just A Girl Moving Dogs. I have been working with JGMD for 2 years now and they have made out of state Surrenders and Adoptions possible. All out of state adoptees have to prove and provide winter shelter with heat in order to adopt. I have adopted tortoises in 10 states. THANK YOU JGMD! Dr Sheila made a You Tube video about Scooter's treatment, adoption, and continued care. Thank You Dr. Sheila for providing a permanent home for Scooter and giving him his continued treatment.

I was very fortunate to aquire two baby Spotted Turtles. They are a fun little turtle. This is yet another species that needs to be bred in order to save the species. They are a small turtle 3 ½ - 4 ½ inches, conservation status: ENDANGERED (Population decreasing). Spotted turtles are aquatic omnivores that inhabit a variety of semi-aquatic or in other words, shallow, fresh water areas such as flooded forests, marshes, wet meadows, bogs and woodland streams in southern Ontario, Canada and the eastern US: the eastern Great Lakes and pretty much the entire Eastern Coastline. Mine are captive bred from legal stock. Here is a video of feeding time. It's crazy to see them fight over thier blood worms... Like there is not enough to go around. Let the feeding frenzy begin. Viewers digression is advised. 😆

In this case breeding is essential in order to save the species. Educated, experienced, responsible breeders should not be governed in cases of captive breding of critically endangered species.

We need everyones voice we can on this one! Please help and share, every educated comment helps. Government over reach and regulations are trying to make Egyptian tortoises illegal to sell across state lines without a permit, which they will not issue just like radiateds and Galapagos tortoises. After Egyptians, pancake tortoises will be next. This in no way helps conversation and propagation of the species.

UPDATE 3/29/23: FWS has taken final action to list the Egyptian tortoise as threatened with a 4(d) rule. The rule becomes effective 30 days after March 30, 2023. While substantive and valid comments were submitted by USARK and others regarding an exemption for open trade of domestically bred tortoises, FWS has once again taken the stance that private keepers increasing the global population of an endangered/threatened species does not qualify as conservation. Below is the only real exception provided under the 4(d) rule and it does not apply to private parties. Apparently, in the eyes of FWS, only zoos and similar institutions do any animal conservation.

snippet: “The 4(d) rule provides an exception for interstate commerce from public institutions to other public institutions, specifically museums, zoological parks, and scientific institutions that meet the definition of “public” at 50 CFR 10.12. Demand for Egyptian tortoises held at or captive-bred by these types of institutions in the United States is not substantial, nor is it likely to pose a significant threat to the wild population in the species’ range countries. As defined in our regulations, “public” museums, zoological parks, and scientific institutions refers to such as are open to the general public and are either established, maintained, and operated as a governmental service or are privately endowed and organized but not operated for profit. This exception applies unless prohibited by CITES regulations, for example if use after import is restricted under 50 CFR 23.55.”

Egyptian Tortoise ESA listing update

We have updated our alert to include sample messaging and Talking Points so that you may easily submit comments. If you missed our announcement, the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service has proposed to list the Egyptian tortoise (Testudo kleinmanni) as threatened under the Endangered Species Act (ESA). Without common-sense exceptions, this has unintended consequences that actually harm the conservation of this species. We explain this in our alert (link below) or just go to www.USARK.org and click the Egyptian tortoise alert. The comment deadline is January 10, 2022.
