We are a 501 (C)(3) all volunteer, non-profit, pet rescue group. Welcome to Second Chance Habitat Facebook, a site dedicated to helping animals in harm's way. We try to make viewers aware of the dogs' and cats' plights, and whenever possible, find rescues, fosters, sponsors and adopters for the pets whose lives depend on people who respond on their behalf.

Meet Porter – Your New Best Friend!

Looking for the perfect blend of playful energy and snuggly couch potato? Here’s…Porter, a sweet, loving pup who’s ready to steal your heart! This happy-go-lucky dog absolutely loves to play fetch – just say the word, and he will be sprinting after that ball with pure joy, tail wagging. This enthusiastic pup thrives on an active lifestyle. He would be a great running companion. But once it’s over, Porter is all about sofa snuggling and cozy cuddles.

Porter is a people-lover through and through. Great with adults, children, and new friends alike. Porter loves to show off some simple commands including sit and stay. Porter would be a joy to continue basic training – quick learner and aims to please. This fellow thrives on human connection and will happily follow you from room to room just to be close. If you are looking for a furry friend who has equal parts of fun and affection, Porter might just be your perfect pal.

Important to note: Porter is very dog friendly and loves to play with other canines! Watch his video in the comments.

🐾🏠 Beautiful Raven needs a foster or forever home! 🐾🏠
Raven was rescued from the Davidson County animal shelter in Lexington, NC. The first 3 years of her life were horrible. She was kept outside and barely fed. The worst happened when she delivered puppies last winter and because they were kept outside, all her puppies froze to death. So it was really a blessing when she found herself in the shelter because at least there, she had a chance at a new life.

Naturally, she was emaciated when we pulled her from the shelter, but her personality was golden, and you won't find a sweeter dog. Raven is a beautiful cream colored husky mix who weighed only 36 pounds when she came to us but now she is a healthy 50 pounds.

Raven's foster says she is a delight in the home, and she is just amazed by Raven's good manners and polite behavior. She calls her an "angel" and she certainly lives up to that label. She is housebroken and crate trained and a perfect lady in the home. She walks well on a leash and rides well in a vehicle. She is very dog-friendly and affectionate with her humans.

Raven is fully vaccinated, spayed, chipped and has been treated for heartworms. Now she is ready to begin her new life with a loving family.

Darwin is a super cute 1 yo boy, he adores people and other dogs, he's so playful yet walks like a little gentleman on leash! This darling guy is just 36 lb, what a great size, and even though he was picked up as a stray he's loveable and happy and just needs a home of his own! You can see that he likes balls, I bet he'd love a big yard to run and play in! Please consider Darwin, he's in boarding for so long, he will be your best friend! 🐶 Meet Boston – the sweetest gentleman you’ll ever meet! 🐾
Just like his dad Cash, Boston quickly stood out at the shelter for his impeccable manners and kind heart. Out of nearly 200 dogs, the staff couldn’t stop raving about what a well-behaved, gentle soul he is—and they were eager to see him rescued!

Now in a loving foster home, Boston continues to impress. He's calm, cuddly, and house-trained. He’s great in the car, enjoys beach days, and loves going for walks with his people (especially if it includes some playtime with his dad!).

"Boston has been such a joy in his foster home! He has the kindest soul and the gentlest heart! This sweet boy is calm, house-trained, knows a few tricks and LOVES to cuddle. He has done a great job with kids and with other dogs. Boston loves his morning walks and has enjoyed a few beach adventures. Whether he is lounging at our feet or playing in the sand on a beach day, or taking a road trip in the car, he is happy as a clam when he is near his people! He is one of those truly special pups who will fill your home with love, loyalty and tail wags!"

Jacob is still waiting for his forever home — could it be yours?
This beautiful 1-year-old Dutch/German Shepherd mix came to the shelter heartbroken and withdrawn, but once he felt safe, his sweet personality began to shine. Jacob is gentle, affectionate, loyal, curious, and incredibly smart. His striking eyes and gorgeous medium-length coat just add to his charm!

Jacob can be timid at first — especially with new people or on a leash — but with a little patience and encouragement, he warms up beautifully. He walks fine once he trusts you and takes treats ever so gently. He’s still learning to build confidence and would thrive in a calm, supportive home that can help him come out of his shell.

🐶 Meet Buster — the sweet, easygoing brother to our spunky pup Buddy! 💛

Buster is 4 months old, about 28 lbs, and fully vaccinated. While his brother is full of razzle-dazzle, Buster brings the calm, cuddly vibes. He’s gentle, affectionate, and happiest lounging on the couch or napping peacefully in his crate — but don’t worry, he still loves a good backyard romp with his doggy pals!

✨ Meet Buddy – the life of the paw-ty! ✨

This four-month-old sweetheart is full of puppy charm and pure personality! Buddy came to us from Duplin County Shelter with his brother Buster, and both are listed as boxer mixes. While Buster is great, Buddy is stealing hearts left and right with his playful spirit and affectionate snuggles. 🐾💕

Buddy is the perfect mix of silly and sweet — always up for playtime, whether it’s with other dogs or any human willing to join in on the fun. He's got a little mischievous streak that’ll keep you smiling, but don’t let that fool you — he’s also incredibly loving and loves to be close to his people.

Little Toby has come to town! His owner died in NC and he was left with a relative who kept him outside, so naturally he needs a home now where he will be an indoor pet. However, Toby does love to run and play in the backyard! He loves other dogs and seems to be okay with cats, too, but one cat does not like Toby.

He's had to endure a lot of changes in his life so he will need time to decompress in any new environment. Toby does not like to go in his crate but once he's in, he seems very content. He's very quiet. His current foster has never heard him bark. He walks well on a leash and loves to go for a walk! He is also a perfect passenger in a vehicle.

Toby's physical stats: The dog scanner lists him as a combination wire-haired fox terrier and Norfolk terrier. He is 15 pounds, 2 years old, fully vaccinated, 4DX negative and will be neutered as soon as we can get him an appointment.

Toby is a great little companion. He just needs someone with time and patience to help him feel comfortable and he will warm right up. Since he was apparently not around children in his past life, we recommend an adult home for him at this point. Chase has made his case and he's looking for a home to call his own! This gorgeous brindle boy is 1.5 years old and an all around good boy . He's eager to please and enjoys learning new things in his training classes. He will impress you with his knowledge of commands and would thrive in an active home where he can practice his skills! At the top of his list of favorites are kids, doggy friends and bananas! So if you're looking for a well behaved cuddle bug and have a few spare bananas around, we have a new best friend for you.

Physical stats: Chase is about 18 months old, 60 pounds, fully vaccinated and heartworm negative. He will be neutered and chipped as soon as possible. The dog scanner lists him as a Neapolitan Mastiff, Pitbull and Plott Hound mix.
To his credit, he is housebroken and crate trained and loves to go on walks. He seems to prefer female dogs over males--he's definitely a lady's man! But his sweet personality can take him almost anywhere and he will be successful. He hails from a shelter in Onslow County, NC, where someone had abandoned him in a crate outside the shelter door.

But that's in the past. Now he has a chance at a whole new life and we want to help him find his loving home. He has so much love to give! This unbelievably handsome young yellow lab mixed boy is still waiting for his turn to have his very own family to love! Davis is everything you'd want in a companion, he's gentle and quiet, smart, funny, dignified and affectionate! Davis is also deaf but that doesn't affect him, but maybe that's why he's still waiting. Anyone who's had a deaf dog can tell you it is just like having a hearing dog, and dogs can learn sign language! He's just a young 2yo, he's a gentle 69 lbs with excellent manners and good with kids, cats, dogs! This absolutely adorable and handsome boy is still waiting! He was so depressed when he ended up in the shelter but has since opened up revealing what a funny, gentle, curious, loyal, intelligent, athletic and affectionate boy he is! We believe he's a Dutch/German Shepherd mix, beautiful medium length coat, his eyes are stunning! Jacob is approximately 1yo, he's neutered and utd on vaccinations, friendly with all dogs and cats and kids, he's just a sweetheart, plus he's housetrained. He came to the shelter with a brother who was adopted and is doing so well, Jacob was shy and overlooked. He's ready to be your awesome pet!
