There's a new catch phrase out there when making trim decisions regarding toe length with our horses' feet. Are you ready for it? It's called.....

LONG TOE (cue dramatic music)

Certain trim styles are now proselytizing that 'chopping toes' is detrimental to the horse and causes P3 damage over time. They are advocating that leaving toes 'long' prevents this consequence.

So what IS a long toe? It's a completely subjective statement. What's long to one person isn't necessarily long to another. How are we, as a general horse caretaking population, determining the correct length of toe?

I've shared here 4 photos of horse's feet and I'd like some feedback as to whether these toes are considered long or not, and HOW DO YOU KNOW?

I have very specific criteria that is objective, measurable, and comparable over time to determine where I arbitrarily trim the toe length three dimensionally.

I look forward to your comments!

How well do you know all the parts of P3/Distal Phalanx/Coffin Bone? Especially on the articular surface?

I marvel how every tiny surface has a specific purpose and integration into the complex design of the foot.

What is a mentor?

“A mentor is a peer with more experience and a desire to help others on their own journey.” - Daisy Alexis Bicking

The definition of a mentor is a person who enjoys sharing their knowledge, skills, and experience with another person to help them progress.

Why a Mentor Isn't Always an Expert
In our quest for knowledge and growth, we often seek guidance from those we perceive as experts in their field. However, the idea that a mentor must be an expert can be misleading. While expertise can be a valuable asset in a mentor, it is not the sole defining factor of mentorship. In fact, a mentor's role extends beyond just possessing knowledge and skills. Here's why a mentor doesn't always mean an expert:

1. Experience Over Expertise: While expertise implies a deep understanding of a subject, experience adds another layer of richness to mentorship. An experienced individual may not be an expert in the traditional sense but can offer invaluable insights gained through practical application and real-world challenges. This experiential knowledge can be more relatable and practical for mentees facing similar situations.

2. Guidance and Support: Mentorship is not just about imparting knowledge but also about providing guidance and support. A mentor's role is to help mentees navigate their journey, offering advice, encouragement, and a different perspective. This supportive role is often more critical than being an expert in a particular field.

3. Learning Together: The mentor-mentee relationship is a two-way street. While mentors share their knowledge and experiences, they also learn from their mentees. This reciprocal learning enriches both parties.

4. Personal Development: A mentor's impact goes beyond professional development; it also influences personal growth. Mentors serve as role models, inspiring mentees to develop essential skills such as communication, leadership, and resilience, which are not solely based on expertise but on character and values.

5. Networking and Connections: Mentors can open doors to valuable networking opportunities and connections, which can be instrumental in one's career development. These connections are often based on the mentor's relationships and reputation rather than their expertise in a specific field.

6. Long-term Relationship: Unlike experts, whose role may be limited to providing specific advice or knowledge, mentors often establish long-term relationships with mentees. This enduring bond allows mentors to provide ongoing support and guidance, transcending the boundaries of expertise.

While expertise in a mentor is undoubtedly beneficial, it is not the only criterion for effective mentorship. A mentor's value lies in their ability to provide guidance, support, and wisdom gained through experience. By recognizing the broader aspects of mentorship, individuals can benefit more from these relationships and achieve greater personal and professional growth.
