Sassafras Laurel is a spunky, active, playful girl who loves attention. She loves to talk, cuddle, fetch her ball, and get head and neck scratches. and when you miss me most, remember that i have only built a house next door. a single breath away. we can whisper through the walls. and send love notes in the shape of stars and sunsets and the way that the light glistens on the water just so. and although things are hard for you now, i am not far away. i am absent only in flesh but my spirit is dancing with the heavenly ones. we will reach each other once again. i promise. just not yet. find laughter again, okay? find music and purpose and ways to feel alive. we are only separated by a glimmer of time. an interval. take comfort. i have only built a house next door.

Your loss is worthy of respect. 🤎

Lifting your gaze from your own loss is impossible sometimes. If your own loss has consumed you, it’s okay. That’s a normal human response.

Sometimes personal grief feels consumed by collective grief. And sometimes your own loss is too loud, too fresh, too... everything to pay much attention to the outside world.

There was a massive natural disaster a few months after Matt died. Normally, I’d have done whatever I could to help: donate, fundraise, educate others on the best ways to help, join relief efforts. I couldn’t do any of it. I couldn’t even watch the news. I felt like a jerk. My own trauma consumed everything. The only thing that helped me stop feeling guilty was knowing that there were others out there doing the work - showing up when I could not.

Everyone is different. Sometimes helping others helps you navigate and survive your own loss. Sometimes you can only focus on the next five minutes in front of you: breathe in, breathe out.

While it is definitely not a life-long strategy, stepping back from the pain of the world is sometimes necessary.

If your own loss consumes you, it’s ok to tend to that pain. Inside your grief, you stand in solidarity with everyone who wants their own pain acknowledged and understood.

Find that core of humanity in love and in loss - know that accepting your own grief as worthy of respect helps create a world where all losses are held as worthy.

May all grieving people everywhere be heard and companioned inside their pain. May all grieving people everywhere find love and kindness in themselves.
