AKC Breeder of Merit - Champion and Grand Champion Flat-coated retrievers.
This is truly a great read and recommendations from the AKC - look closely at what is recommended by breed and note they only list the top 40 breeds. All of our puppies contractually cannot be spayed or neutered until they are at least age 2 and their growth plates have closed.
New research has redefined the best age to spay/neuter popular dog breeds. Delaying the procedure can prevent joint disorders and certain cancers.
I am an AKC Breeder of Merit and also a member of the Flat-Coated Retriever Society of America. Both the sire and the dam on every litter we have bred have all their OFA clearances.
The Flat-Coat is primarily a family companion hunting retriever. He is keen and birdy, flushing within gun range, as well as a determined, resourceful retriever on land and water.
Are you interested in this breed? The OFA, working with the Flat-Coated Retriever Society of America, recommends the following basic health screening tests for all breeding stock:
- Hip Dysplasia (OFA)
- ACVO Eye Exam
- Patellar Luxation
Dogs meeting these basic health screening requirements are issued Canine Health Information Center (CHIC) numbers. For potential puppy buyers, CHIC certification is a good indicator the breeder responsibly factors good health into their selection criteria.

Baxter, the #1 Flat-coated Retriever in 2021, and Grayson, the current 2023 #4 bitch all systems, had a wonderful Maine rendezvous. Hopefully puppies are expected in mid December. All puppies will be black but carry liver.

August Stats are out and Grayson remains the #4 All breed Flat-coated Retriever bitch in the USA and in the Top 20 Breed and All-breed. Having shown only 8 weekends this year I am so proud to be her breeder and owner! No future shows are scheduled as she will be breeding to Baxter - GCHP Argon's The Percival Proctor Baxter ( #1 all systems Flat-coated Retriever for 2021 in the USA). WOW - Grayson continues to amaze me! This last year she finished her AKC Silver Grand Championship, won the 1st award of merit at our National (with over 450 flat-coats competing), and won Select again at the prestigious Westminster Kennel Club show, perfectly presented by the phenomenal Megan Hof. She ended 2022 as the #1 liver flat-coated retriever and in the top 20 in the USA in breed points! In limited showing in 2023 she won her first group placement at our supported entry weekend in Lakeland shown by the fabulous Billy Rodriguez Jr. and Brendan Coleman. At the end of February 2023 she was the #1 bitch in the USA in all breed points and continues so be in the top 10 in both breed and all breed points.
The previous year she finished her AKC Bronze Grand Championship, won Select at both the Westminster Kennel Club show and the prestigious Morris & Essex show held once every 5 years, and she was the #1 liver flat-coated retriever for 2021!
At barely 7 months of age she was the 2019 AKC Royal Canin Flat-coated retriever Puppy of the Year and quickly finished her AKC championship and Grand championship before her 2nd birthday.
More importantly she truly enjoys the everyday pleasures of life and absolutely adores our grandsons - Everett and Ford.

POTENTIAL OWNER: How much is the puppy?
BREEDER: $3,500.00 USD
POTENTIAL OWNER: What?? It's way too expensive!!
BREEDER: What do you think would be a good price?
POTENTIAL OWNER: No more than $1,000.00. You breeders are so over priced.
BREEDER: I am sorry you see it this way, why don't you try it yourself?
POTENTIAL OWNER: But I've never done it!
BREEDER: For FREE I can teach you how to do it, and in addition you will have the knowledge to do it again.
POTENTIAL OWNER: Perfect, thank you!
BREEDER: To start you will need a female(average minimal cost $3,500 and up). Also a male(average minimal cost $3,500 and up) or semen (average $3,000 and up). You will need to show them to their championship to show they meet the breed standard (Minimal $2,500 each with travel & fees). You will need to do genetic & health testing on them, averages about $750 per dog. Raise and provide daily care, feeding & grooming for 2 years. (So minimal $150 per month)
POTENTIAL OWNER: But I don't have that much money...
BREEDER: For $500 you can raise a litter for me and then keep one of the puppies. Obviously, you also have to pay the cost of whelping & care.
POTENTIAL OWNER: I can do that.
BREEDER: OK so I have a female due to whelp in 2 weeks. You will need to be available 24/7 around the clock for at least 8 weeks to help with delivery and care. Possibly tube or bottle feed puppies every 2-3 hours if the mom is low on milk the first couple weeks.
POTENTIAL OWNER: Eight weeks?? it's way too much time for me! I have to work.
BREEDER: You will also need the reproductive vet to do xrays($200-$500), possibly progesterone testing($75-$250) & a C-section($2,000 - $5,000) and initial vet care on pups until old enough to be placed. Pups vets exams and two sets of vaccines ($250 per puppy and up depending on how many puppies are in the litter)
Have on hand a scale, thermometer, latex gloves, sanitizer, absorbent tissues, scissors, hemostats, heating pad, whelping box, blankets, cleaning supplies, appropriate food with supplements for mothers, formula, medications & hand feeding supplies in case of emergency....
POTENTIAL OWNER: But I don't have all these things!
BREEDER: For $1,000 you can buy them.
POTENTIAL OWNER: Ummm .... You know, I think it might be better if I just buy a puppy.
BREEDER: Wise decision.
For us breeders there are no vacations or holidays, while you go to visit with family & friends we are home at our dogs side caring for them. It is a no breaks commitment.
THIS IS THE REALITY
When you choose a professional, you don't only pay for the puppy but also:
Tools, knowledge, experience, love, time, sacrifices, etc.
So please chose a preservation breeder that has shown their dogs to their championship, done all required testing, stays home with their puppies the first 8 weeks and makes you fill out an application and also sign a contract!!!!
