A pup is never too young. It’s better to start a puppy off on the right track and start setting your boundaries starting day 1. I normally recommend to start obedience training around 12 weeks of age so they have a solid foundation and as they get older then you can teach more advanced obedience.

To some, you may say “well I just train it”. But as a dog trainer, there’s more than that. HOW TO TRAIN YOUR DOG…

1. Be consistent- don’t allow your dog to get away with bad behaviors because you’re too tired or you don’t have the necessary tools near

2. Hold your dog accountable- if I give my dog a command then I’m going to make sure that he actually does it

3. Practice- this is an easy one. Your dog isn’t going to understand the rules if you only train once a week with your trainer

4. Motivation- find what motivated your dog and use that to your advantage

There are many factors to consider when picking the right breed.

-how active are you? Of course if you’re an active individual then getting an English bulldog is probably not the right fit for you

-are you a first time dog owner? This is also a question that helps you pick the right breed. I personally would not recommend a high strung or stubborn type breed for a first time dog owner

-what’s the ideal dog size? There are larger breeds that work for apartment life but where you live and the space you have would be a factor for the type of dog you should get

-shedding vs non shedding?

It’s hard for others to not want to get a specific breed just based off of looks but do research or hire a trainer to find the right breed for you and your family

I know it’s hard to believe but us dog trainers deal with issues with our personal dogs just like you. Sure, my dogs know a lot of commands and can be obedient, but I’m constantly managing them. Do they ignore me? Of course! Do I have to repeat commands at times? Most definitely! Do they get in the trash? I’ve lost count at this point. To be successful with training your dog you have to have realistic expectations. Don’t expect that training is complete after a few lessons. You will always need to fine tune commands and maintain training throughout your dogs life.

When I have a client that tells me their dog is chewing up furniture or shredding paper while they are gone, I have a simple solution… use a crate. If taught properly, the crate is not a punishment and dogs tend to like going in. I make it positive by giving treats when they walk in, feeding their meals in the crate, and designating specific crate sessions. Think of the crate as a bedroom. My dogs run in their crates because they know they always get something and it’s also a time to rest/relax

With winter officially being here, be aware of temps and how long your dogs should stay outside. If course, there’s always exceptions based off of the breed of dog that you own. Most of the double coated breeds love being outside during this time of year. Don’t shame those who own a double coated breed. These guys love being outside and refuse to come in to the heated home. This includes Great Pyrenees and huskies
