Tip of the Day: Keeping Your Pets Calm on the Fourth of July
Hi Urban Tails family, Dr. Alex here! As we celebrate the Fourth of July, it's important to remember that the festivities can be stressful for our furry friends. Here are some tips to help keep your pets calm and safe tonight:

Walk During the Day: Take your dog for a long walk during the day to help release some of their energy. A tired dog is a calmer dog, especially when the fireworks start.

Final Walk Before Fireworks: Give your dog one last walk before the fireworks start to get heavy. This will help them settle in for the evening.

Create a Safe Space: Bring your pets inside before the fireworks begin. Create a safe and comfortable space for them, whether it's a crate or a quiet room. Playing calming music can also help soothe their anxiety.

Stay Calm: Remember, your pets can sense your emotions. Stay calm and reassuring to help your dog feel safe and secure.

Consider a Pressure Vest: If your dog is particularly anxious, consider using a pressure vest. These can provide a sense of security and help reduce anxiety.

It's an American tradition to celebrate our independence with festivities and fireworks. Our furry friends enjoy it too, specially around the BBQ grill and the visitors that don't always know the house rules.

We at Urban Tails Vet wanted to take this opportunity to wish you a happy 4th of July and leave you with a few tips about pet safety.

FACT: more pets go missing over the 4th of July holiday than any other time of year because fireworks terrify them.
As a precautionary measure, all pets, even those kept indoors full-time, should always wear collars with ID tags. Indoor-only pets can become so frightened during firework displays that they may take desperate measures to escape the noise, including breaking through windows or door screens. Some people think putting cotton balls in their ears helps with the noise, just remember to remove it afterwards :)

Next is a few tips on how to keep your pets safe and avoid a visit to the ER.

1. Let them hide out in their happy place, this is specially important for cats.
2. Bust out your anti-anxiety tool kit, if you need one contact us.
3. Update your pet's ID tag and microchip information
4. Do not fall for puppy eyes at the grill. Too much human food like fatty food, can cause pancreatitis and GI issues.
5. Keep and eye out for other toxins, after all, you are living in colorful Colorado.
6. Sparklers, glow sticks, fireworks, charcoal, and kabob skewers away from curious pets.
7. Lastly remember to have fun, you party animals:)
