Since we changed locations in 2011, we have placed over 48,000 animals in their forever homes. Beyond adoptions, we also have one of the largest public low cost spay/neuter and vaccination clinics in South Carolina. ☁️ On this cozy, cloudy day, Meet Pippa - your future cuddle companion! This sweet girl has been with us since November. Can you believe that? She’s a bit timid after so long spent in the shelter, but every day she opens up more and more. She would love nothing more than to find a cozy lap to curl up on, listening to the pitter-patter of raindrops outside. Pippa thrives in relaxed environments, and would do best in a home with another feline to share her snuggly moments with. Happy Thursday! Today, our animals are hunkered down from all the rain and enjoying some cozy snuggles with our staff. They’re busy smiling for the cameras, getting some long naps in, and dreaming of warmer, sunnier days (preferably in their forever homes).

Ruff week? 💔 We know Valentine’s Day can be tough. But no worries, because we’re here to help! We are extending our Love is Ruff Valentines campaign until Friday, February 21st! For a $30 donation, we will feature their name on our Wall of Exes (the old Meridian Brick building located at 300 Airport Road) before it gets demolished! All proceeds will go directly to our Love Is a Four Legged Word capital campaign in support of our monumental expansion allowing us to increase our capacity to provide essential services and save lives all over the southeast.

Hey-o! It’s your boy, Scorpio! I’m legit so excited to finally have my turn up on this social page. I’ve heard y’all are the best and that you always work your magic in getting other doggos and cattos adopted! You probably remember me. I was shot and ended up needed knee surgery – and you guys made my surgery possible! My surgery incision is now completely healed, and all of my pain is gone. They’re still making me do physical therapy here and there, but it’s totally worth it to be able to walk again and to not have to wear that terrible satellite dish every single day (e-collar).

The people here took such good care of me. They taught me how to be strong, even when I wanted to give up. They taught me that it’s ok to ask for help. That they were here for me. And they would do anything to take away all of my past pain. And as much as I couldn’t ask for anything more, I’ve honestly been dreaming of this day since I got here. And I can’t believe it’s finally here.

I would love nothing more than to meet my forever family today. Will you consider sharing my post so I can finally, finally go home?

Did you know we have an entire Behavior & Enrichment department with certified dog trainers on staff? Their team plays a vital role here at the shelter, from assessing long-term animals and establishing care plans, to providing day-to-day enrichment for all of our furry residents! Their goal is to teach positive reinforcement techniques and methods to encourage positive experiences for our dogs. They also aim to educate not only the volunteers and staff, but the public as well.

They’ve recently rolled out our first official training class: Brick House Basics! Brick House Basics is a 5-week class for our shelter residents that is led by our Certified Professional Dog Trainers and is designed to build confidence and life skills for our dogs. Shelter dogs who graduate from the Brick House Basics program will receive diplomas to take home with their new families!

With our new expansion planned along the Prisma Health Swamp Rabbit Trail and conveniently located next to our current location, our goal is to introduce opportunities like these to our community in support of keeping dogs in their loving homes. 💚

Transparency is just one of our core values, and these are numbers we’re proud to share with our community. In January alone, we spayed/neutered 950 cats and dogs. This is truly incredible. We’re slowly, but surely, chipping away at the pet overpopulation in our community, but we can’t do it without your help. Passionate about helping homeless animals and have great customer service skills? We're currently seeking a full-time Adoption Counselor to join our team! Adoption Counselors are responsible for creating fairytale endings for the animals in our care by facilitating their adoptions and helping them find forever homes. They also provide care to the animals including their daily cleaning, feeding and walking. Adoption Counselors work closely with their teammates in a fast-paced but fulfilling environment. They work to provide the best quality of life for the animals in our care. This position is perfect for those who are seeing an entry-level position into the animal welfare field.

YES! That one! Days like this make me super excited to attend. See, I may still be here at the shelter, but I have BIG dreams of finding my forever family. PUPDATE: Levi is in a foster home! 🥲💚

‘If you have adopted my best buddy and friend, it means I can no longer care for him.’

‘He was my love for 8 or 9 years.’

‘Be patient.’

‘I know you will love him. He will love you so much.’

‘He’s always been on a leash so I wouldn’t let him loose. He might go looking for me.’

Surrendered with a 4-page letter, we’re reminded why we do what we do. After spending all 9 years of his life with her, Levi’s elderly owner had to surrender him. Quickly aging, she was no longer able to care for him the way he deserved. And she wanted the best for him.

In these moments, our hearts break. But we’re reminded of the importance of compassion and understanding. We know how hard life can be. And we’ll continue to step up for those that need help in desperate moments.

We made her a promise. We promised to find Levi someone that will love him just as much as she did. And forever will. That’s a promise we intend to keep.

Levi is great with other dogs. He’s also great with kids. He was considered his elderly owner’s ‘service dog’, providing her support when her hearing wasn’t at its best. But now, he misses her. He’s sad here. We can see it in his eyes.

We want to find him a family that will be able to give him forever. That will keep in touch with us, so we can share his new photos with his previous owner. Because we know how hard these decisions can be. And we want her to know she did the right thing. That her selfless sacrifice gave him forever. We promise.
