Friendly reminder we will be out of town January 24th-30th for a veterinary conference and back to normal schedule Friday January 31st. We will also be implementing our price adjustments for 2025 based on rises in inventory costs, insurance increases, etc as has everyone else. Anyone with an appointment starting in February will be with the new prices. We do still have appointments up until we leave for the conference next Friday 24th. Please let us know if you need an appointment and we'll do our best to get you seen before we leave for a few days! Thanks and stay warm! Looks like we may have another few "wintery" days next week again! Please be sure any outside pets are prepared to stay warm and dry!

For those getting monthly Librela injections for your arthritic dogs- you can now get Zoetis Petcare Rewards for these monthly injections. Save your invoice and upload within 30 days of purchase and get points and money back on your Zoetis Petcare Rewards card that you can in turn use as a "veterinary gift card" basically for purchase of veterinary products and services. SMVS clients, please remember, you can log onto our pet portal from our website and download old invoices, or we can help resend one as well. This offer is not exclusive to our patients and clients so feel free to share.

For those wondering if Librela is right for your dog, please reach out to us. This monthly injection can be very helpful for painful arthritic dogs, but is not suited for any and every dog's individual situation.

Librela helps relieve osteoarthritis pain in dogs with a monthly injection administered by your vet.

Hello SMVS Friends and Family!
I have returned from the Veterinary Leadership Conference in Chicago and had the honor of meeting and conversing with some real giants in our field. A big topic of discussion was helping our veterinary community in California right now. I have reached out to some colleagues out that way and brainstormed with some colleagues here that have even more contacts. We are working to start bringing together lists of animal rescues, shelters, vets, and other organizations that are doing everything they can to help out as the fires continue decimating so much everyday. Seems each day I'm still seeing yet another colleague out there posting about losing their home to the fires. We still have been encouraging anyone that wants to continue donating for the WNC relief as well to their state vet page as they have had teams to get together distribution centers to help get materials and funding to where it is needed based on their communication with rescues and clinics around the state. Everyone that donated and continued to donate to this was and is still greatly appreciated. Colleagues we've seen at conferences and events have passed along their gratitude and we're still open ears when and if they need help from their SC neighbors.

This list will continue to be updated as we get confirmation they are not money scams and get donations where it is needed. Because it is so far, it will be much easier to support through monetary donations or through Amazon wish lists that may be posted for direct/closer shipping. Again, we will update as we get more contacts over next few days. Thank you all and please feel free to share!

ALERT: The Los Angeles County Department of Public Health is advising residents to not feed their pets Monarch Raw Pet Food sold at several farmers markets in California due to detection of H5 bird flu virus in product samples.

Residents who fed their pets Monarch raw pet food products or other raw meat or dairy products and notice their pet is experiencing symptoms should immediately contact their veterinarian.

Additionally, residents should avoid consumption of all raw milk and raw meat products and not feed these to their pets. LA County Public Health recently confirmed H5 bird flu in four house cats from a separate household that consumed recalled raw milk and became sick and died, which is part of an ongoing investigation. We want to thank our friends at Midlands Pet Care Pet Crematory and Cemetery for another year of helping carry out final resting wishes for our dearly departed patients over this past year. Please reach out to them when the time comes after your pet passes as well for cremation and other final resting services. They are often even able to come pick up pets from your house after they have passed which is very helpful especially with larger pets. This is a family owned business here in the midlands and have been very compassionate, kind, and overall great to work with these last few years!

It's here y'all. 😣 We will do our best to keep you all as updated as quickly as possible. We got another message from the American Veterinary Medical Association (AVMA) today that they are working on a vaccine for animals to help mitigate this, but there is the risk of this becoming another pandemic...and quickly. This is being found in several species now with different strains and mutations, affecting all differently. It is even being found in poultry meats in raw cat and dog food diets with reports of some deaths already. We strongly urge our poultry clients to follow the Clemson Livestock Poultry Health page for updates and safety recommendations as well.

03/01/2025

UPDATES!

PLEASE, PLEASE, PLEASE do not feed raw diets for your dogs and cats. We have had more cases reported of pets that have died from contracting avian flu from eating a commercial raw meat diet and other cases of antibiotic-resistant bacteria contracted by owners from handling raw diets feeding their pets.

Reminder Dr. Scott will be out of town next Wednesday afternoon 1/8 through Saturday night 1/11 for a conference and back to normal schedule Monday 1/13/25. We still have a few appointment spots open for Monday 1/6 through Wednesday 1/8 afternoon of next week.

Also....on a more positive note...
We have now gotten set up with Purina Vet Direct so that we can have your Purina prescription and non-prescription diets, supplements, etc shipped to your door! We understand some of you already do so through Vetsource and every now and then they are out of something. We want to be sure we have you set up ideally not to miss a shipment and keep your pet stocked with their food and prescription diets! Please email us to help you set up your account as you will need our clinic code to connect!
Thanks and stay warm out there!

FEW END OF YEAR REMINDERS FOR OUR SMVS FAMILY AND FRIENDS:
We will resume normal schedule on Thursday Jan 2nd, 2025. We have been using these last few days for administrative catch up and preparing for the new year to start.

NEW YEARS:
Please be sure again to check if your pet needs more mild sedatives prior to the fireworks coming for New Years.
-Consider thunder shirts for dogs if they tolerate them. The gentle squeeze of the fabric helps to "hug your pet" and stimulate the parasympathetic, or the "rest and digest" nervous system.
-Keep TV or radio on inside or in barns to help drown out some outside noises.
-Keep lights on so less flashing noticed through the window or door.
-Close curtains to help block out flashing.
-Be sure microchip contact/address information is updated online. Please let us know if you need help finding your information.
-Secure fences, pens, and barns.
-Make sure pets have updated contacts on collars, harnesses, and halters should they get out!
-Check the yard the next morning for any fireworks debris before your pet tries to eat any of this!
-Keep food and drinks out of reach of pets!
-Provide safe hiding spots for pets that need to decompress!
-Cuddle up with your furry friends so they feel safe!

REMINDER OF CHANGE IN FEES:
Just like everyone else, the veterinary community is being affected by rises in prices of materials, meds, truck maintenance, card processing fees, etc as well. We have already been notified by our distributors and labs of their 2025 fee schedules and will be adjusting our prices in response to these changes as well. We will put these into effect beginning Feb 1st, 2025. All appointments scheduled on or after this day will be charged based on these new prices. We do accept cash, check, Zelle, and CareCredit, all of which do NOT have a card processing fee. We also do accept debit and credit cards, but these do have card processing fees. Old pricing will be in effect for the entire month of January. We try our best to serve our clients and patients with quality care while remaining affordable and competitive, and while not operating at a loss either as to remain sustainable as a business as well. We appreciate your understanding in this matter. Please remember we always try to remind clients of available rebates to get you money back on products when possible. THIS IS FREE MONEY BACK IN YOUR POCKET! We are more than happy to help with this if needed and will even save your login and card info to your file to help you not to lose this information and money at your request even if you lose the rebate card.

We still have availability throughout January, but do note that Dr. Scott does have two conferences this month to learn more great things to help better serve you and your pets. Please refer here to help with planning your January house call needs. Please remember we do NOT have weekend or after hours housecall appointments.

SMVS FAMILY AND FRIENDS!
We will not be running housecalls from Wed 12/25-Wed 1/1. We will be using some much needed down time with family as well as much needed admin catch up and vet truck maintenance. We will check the email and phone for some scheduling, script refills, and sending records if needed, but will not be running any house calls on these days. Please remember, you can download your pets' records from our website if needed as well. Please also refer to our website for clinics, referral centers, and in home euthanasia services around if needed while we are not running house calls.
Dr. Scott will be out of town and few days in January for two different conferences, but otherwise normal schedule starting back Thursday 1/2/25. We also will be reassessing new 2025 pricing as we have gotten price updates from our labs and distributors. These price adjustments will go into affect 2/1/25.
As 2024 winds down, please let us know of you need anything early next week before we're off, including mild sedatives prior to fireworks. Please check on scripts and be sure there's enough to get them through the holidays while pharmacies close for holiday hours as well. Be sure pets are staying warm, not sharing from the table and risking GI emergency visits, and no eating decorations!
We cannot thank everyone enough for your continued support through another great year! 2025 is gearing up for us to hit the ground running! Thank you and stay safe out there!

Happy International Day of Veterinary Medicine! I've been fortunate enough to travel to a few countries not only to help with veterinarian efforts, but also to learn from amazing veterinary experts around the world. From spaying, neutering, vaccinating, and medicating pets with VIDA in Costa Rica and Nicaragua to learning from leaders in the veterinary field at WSAVA that changes country location every year to give more countries with less veterinary resources better opportunities to attend and learn! It's amazing to see the difference in vet med from one country to the next, but to share the same compassion for animals and medicine with my colleagues from every nook and cranny of the planet!

Did y'all know Dr. Scott did some extra training to treat bees?! Beehives fall under food animal medicine because they produce a consumable product and sometimes the sick hive needs veterinary care! Our friends at Locklairs Farm Supply in Gaston, SC have hives on the property and produce their own honey to sell. This poor little girl found herself on the store floor, cold and hungry. We scooped her up and fed her a drop of honey and she was up and moving better soon after! It's so critical to our environment to save the bees! We wish this little girl well on her bzzzzzy journey back to the hive!
