Belliniās first required post for the Appalachian Trainer Face Off
Bellini is still teaching me how to learn every day and making sure I keep thinking outside of the box.
Bellini went on her first off the farm trip yesterday morning, she did great on the ride over and stayed calm in the new atmosphere.
I have loved working with this mare so far, she doesnāt have a mean bone in her body but she does get confused and frightened which can get dangerous. When being introduced to new things she has a tendency to run toward me.
Everyday is finding a balance with Bellini. She has to have equal parts of learning and play or she shuts down. I have to prove to her that she can trust me day in and day out while trying to introduce her to new things that she doesnāt trust. She craves having a leader to guide her.
Things that Bellini loves include face hugs/rubs, walks in the woods, scratches and other animals. She is so sweet to every horse I introduce her to.
While everything doesnāt look good on paper yet, Bellini has a much better mindset than when she came. We have gotten her ulcers under control after being on ulcer treatment for 4 weeks and giving her Neigh-lox supplement. She is now just on preventative maintenance for ulcers.
Itās been a great first month and Iām excited for what is to come in the next 2 1/2!
I have attached my groundwork list in the pictures to show everything that Bellini has learned and what we are still working towards.

Quinn did the groundwork prep for this one and Savanah is in the saddle!
is getting exposed to more and more as we go. Heās a more confident horse than he was a month ago! Pictures donāt do the process justice. If youāve handled troubled horses before, you know how slow the process has to be in order to make progress. Some days itās one step forward, then you show up the next day and the horse is two steps back. The troubled horses will test everything about you, and itās only fair because in order to change them for the better, we also have to test everything about them. We have to find their fears and expose them to their fears so that they learn to conquer them. Itās an intense process! The cool part is that while youāre helping the horse understand itself, itās helping you understand you.
Ba****ck on mustang Luna over the weekend! My first time sitting on this little Forrest service mustang. She was calm and relaxed with me climbing all over her. She will be starting her under saddle work this week.
With mustangs thereās 2 parts to their training, gentling and education. While Luna seems to have gone to school and gotten an education she is still worried around people and needed to be gentled more. She knew how to do basic maneuvers, but did it reluctantly and acted like she didnāt want to be anywhere near me in the beginning. I like how much this mare has opened up since sheās been here and canāt wait to see her progress under saddle!
Bellini had her first message and Bemer session with Optimal Equine & Canine Massage today! She was unsure of the bemer at first since Iāve never blanketed her but she eventually relaxed and started closing her eyes. She was sore in her back, but it improved significantly by the end of the session. She also let Brienne release some tension from her poll/TMJ, I was so impressed that she was letting someone new touch this sensitive area that she has had issues with. š„

ā¢Bellini has been trying very hard to understand this thing attached to her back. She is still pretty cinchy and doesnāt like to look at it out of her right eye, I think she thinks if she pretends itās not there that it will go away š
ā¢We have a couple of off the farm trips coming up soon, including going to our first obstacle course š¤©
ā¢She has also been getting a lot of TLC these past few days. We found a few cuts on her back right leg on Sunday after bringing her in. Still not totally sure what she got into. Sheās been a great patient to doctor after she figured out I was trying to help her. She seems to enjoy me cold hosing it and tolerates me putting medication on it. Photo of her leg in the comments from the first day to today.

Over the years I have come to hate selling horses and often worry about where they will end up if they are not with me. Unfortunately I canāt keep them all. The best ones end up leaving because I know that they have the best chance of a good life with someone else. This is one of those times that everything worked out and the sweetest mare ever found an amazing home with Anna Johnson
Daisy got to go to her first unicorn birthday party the other day and itās the sweetest thing Iāve ever seen.
Hereās to all of the wonderful ponies, I hope one day they all get to experience being treated like a unicorn.
Bellini took the weekend off, we both needed a little break. We took updated pictures today and look at that shine š¤©

7 Mustangs, 1 Forest Service Wild Horse, and 1 Appalachian Brumby on the farm! Love these feral horses ā¤ļø
Itās always a good day when excel delivers!
I have opted to switch Bellini from excels stability feed to their trifiber complete feed.
Bellini is a pretty picky eater and when given trifiber complete she couldnāt get enough of it.
I also love that itās low sugar and starch based but sheās getting all the fat and protein she needs to gain a healthy amount of weight.

Back porch thoughts.
You donāt always have to have the answers, but quitting isnāt an option.
And I donāt mean you canāt quit your job or something like that. Sure you can. Heck you may need to.
But you canāt stop chasing your dream, your real purpose.
When it gets tough you keep trying and working hard because there is no other choice.
Cause the other āchoiceā is for your dreams to die and thatās no choice at all.
And you donāt have to tell everyone or anyone what youāre doing, why youāre doing it or how itās going to happen.
Donāt be afraid to grow in silence.
Like a seed.
Push your resources deep. Know itās going to take time. Trust what God has in store for you. Understand itās going to feel lonely. Trust yourself. Focus on your purpose. Grow silently and set strong roots.
Itās not about how fast you can peak but rather if youāve built a foundation to weather the storms and last for decades to come so those that come after you cam benefit from your strength and shade.
In a loud, busy and distraction filled world, give yourself the time you need to grow in silence.

Bellini had her first chiropractor appointment this afternoon!
She did a great job, she was pretty unsure of the strange man touching all over her but she was so relaxed by the end of it that her eyes were closing and her lip was drooping.
She was out in her poll and left side of her neck which might explain why she doesnāt like to have her poll touched.
Love at first sight between brumby Bellini and mustang Dan š„°

Bellini is slowly gaining weight and feeling more comfortable in her body.
She has been a pretty picky eater so we set out a buffet for her the other day with all different types of feed to see what she would eat.
She also got upgraded to an outdoor paddock since she is easier to catch and she is so much happier now that sheās not cooped up in a stall.
More videos of her training are coming soon, we have been taking this week slow with short sessions to keep her relaxed and building her confidence.
She is still extremely cinchy and tends to shut down when she is cinched up. We are taking a few steps back to work on this.

#hopteambellini learning how to move out with a bareback pad on. My normal methods of doing this in the round pen, the arena, or even with another horse to encourage her to move did not work, she would just freeze up. While this isnāt perfect it is a big step in the right direction for her. Appalachian Trainer Face OffHeart of Phoenix Equine Rescue, INC

Day 7 and 8 of Bellini ! Her personality and sweetness are really starting to show through all of that built up fear! In the past 2 days we have worked on ā side passing on the wall away from me ā belly band ā backing off of ledges in preparation to backing out of the trailer ā packing the saddle around ā standing still at the mounting block ā jumping up and down next to her ā laying over her ā carrying the bit This pretty gal is so cool and just gets better and better! #HOPTeamBellini Appalachian Trainer Face Off Heart of Phoenix Equine Rescue, INC
Day 4, 5, and 6 with Bellini! Getting down to the nitty gritty on areas that she struggles with on the ground. She takes every obstacle and desensitization tool that I throw at her in stride but struggles with objects tightening up around her like the rope in this video. I try not to dwell on the areas that she is struggling with by mixing up our sessions with things I think she will be good at and things that she already knows. Over the past 3 days we have worked on ā seeing me above her ā having a rope around her butt ā flank rope ā leading from her feet ā sending through tight spaces and weird objects ā ropes dragging the ground near her ā rubbing all over her And a lot of work with picking up her feet. ā¢ā¢ā¢ā¢ā¢ā¢ā¢ā¢ā¢ā¢ā¢ā¢ā¢ā¢ā¢ā¢ā¢ā¢ā¢ā¢ā¢ā¢ā¢ā¢ā¢ā¢ā¢ā¢ā¢ā¢ā¢ā¢ā¢ā¢ā¢ My farrier was out today to trim other horses and gave me some good pointers to try and fix her kicking out issues. She has a lot of anxiety surrounding her legs and feet that we have been slowly working through. ā¢ā¢ā¢ā¢ā¢ā¢ā¢ā¢ā¢ā¢ā¢ā¢ā¢ā¢ā¢ā¢ā¢ā¢ā¢ā¢ā¢ā¢ā¢ā¢ā¢ā¢ā¢ā¢ā¢ā¢ā¢ā¢ā¢ā¢ā¢ Thank you to everyone following along on Belliniās journey! š„š„ #HOPTeamBellini Appalachian Trainer Face Off Heart of Phoenix Equine Rescue, INC
More foot work! more foot work! š¤£ #HOPTeamBellini telling me how she really feels about those back legs. I will continue to be completely transparent about Bellinis progress, the good and the bad are part of her story and deserve to be shared! Day 3 update will be up soonš„ Appalachian Trainer Face Off Heart of Phoenix Equine Rescue, INC
Day 2 with Bellini! She woke up on the right side of the stall today and was ready to pick up right where we left off yesterday! I always do a quick run through of the previous day to see if there were any parts she may have missed. I think day 2 is where you really see what type of horse youāll be walking into every morning for the next 3 months. Thankfully this morning was not Groundhog Day and she does retain and learn quickly! Additional things we accomplished today: ā Flyspraying everywhere ā Brushing and touching everywhere including her belly, flank and back lags (this was not possible yesterday) ā picking her back legs up with a rope and no kicks! ā switching eyes ā Short walk in the woods to explore I will probably be the first one to trim her back feet because I really like my farrier š, hopefully this weekš¤š¼ More things to work on after today: She does not like her ears and eyes touched and likes to become a girraff when I halter her. My 5ā3ā self really struggles, so we will be starting our session with that tomorrow šš„ #hopteambellini Appalachian Trainer Face Off Heart of Phoenix Equine Rescue, INC
