When you call for a price and are shocked. You have no idea. You have no idea how hard it is to be a breeder sometimes. You have no idea how much it costs for a puppy to live up to two to three months and get into a new home.

There are many who fall sideways and die because of your hands. Sometimes even after days or weeks of sleepless nights I try to do everything for this puppy, but to no avail. You have no idea how desperate it is, losing all your strength and for a moment you think it’s not worth it and you think of quitting everything for a “normal” life, but then you see yourself being watched and you keep going.

To you, who emphasizes that you have seen them cheaper. You have no idea. I don't know how much the notebook costs. Not even a before and after. Of all these years before and after mom and dad live in a row because in the house of a breeder who loves his dogs they die of old age and maybe 15 or 16. No don't compare me to tribal farm or farm because is like comparing master to conveyor.

No you can't imagine when you think it's just a business we live off of our dogs. Correcting you, we live for and for our dogs. It's 365 days, 24 hours. Not having 8 hours of work, and then you go home and forget about everything. No, they do not understand weekends, holidays and if you have a headache. Your entire life changes when you decide to become a breeder. Change your house and it will never be hairless again. Every room of the house will have dog beds and toys. There will also be dog food in your fridge. If you had a white leather sofa, forget about it, it will be covered by a fantastic blanket from Ikea. Your car will change too. If you liked cool sports cars, now you will have a van with no seats. Your electricity and water bills will increase sharply. You'll become a shareholder of brands of bleach, floor cleaners, air fresheners, and mosquito repellent, and will be seen asking for newspapers in bars and newsstands. 99% of clothes you will buy in Decathlon and your shoes will be Crocs (closed in winter and in summer with holes). You will see your family and friends less often and when you do see them, you will be the last because you had to prepare the dogs before you leave.

If you have a partner, he/she has earned his place in heaven because he/she is either a dog like you or has unlimited patience. And that's if we're lucky, because with such a life we lead, the most normal thing is to stay single. Nah, we're hard to understand. It's not easy to understand that, honestly, we put our dogs above everything else, and at some point, above everyone else.

But we love what we do, and that's why we do it because it's something you put your heart into, and you can't even imagine it any other way. No, you don't imagine that after talking to a breeder and hearing him talk about his dogs or visiting his home, you think they're just productive animals. We do not ask for extra recognition or apologies, pity or sympathy, but we ask not to destroy what we do and love.

Thank God, there are many people who appreciate our efforts, and when they bring a puppy raised by you into their lives, they appreciate all the work behind it, so that now they can enjoy the earthquake, which is pride, perhaps decades of dedication. Thanks to all those people who repeat dogs from the same breeder and recommend for all those who are asking.

Thank you because for a breeder there is nothing better than seeing your puppies happy and enjoying their new home and all the suffering, pain and defeats that often occur are forgotten when we see who we've helped to come into this world and make them happy.

Can we please stop expecting that EVERY dog wants to go to dog parks, daycares, patio parties and have birthday parties with other dogs! Nobody loves dogs more than me, but I’m here to tell you that dogs aren’t human children. They don’t want to do everything a human child does. Breed can matter when deciding what is fun for your best friend. Your Husky may have the energy to run, your Retriever may want to retrieve and your terrier may want to chase and grab. So yes, raising them with kindness is paramount, but paying attention to their needs is too. I said it.

This mentality that every dog has to be “social” with other people and dogs is keeping my shelter full, my days long and my heart broken, because I see the best dogs passed over, because they wouldn’t do well at a dog park or daycare. Not every dog needs to like your friends. I keep my dog in his room when people come over, because he isn’t comfortable around everyone, and I don’t want to set him up for failure. Love your dog enough to respect her boundaries.

Your dog doesn’t want to meet every dog. The reality show you watched about dog training and dog adoption is fake, I’ve worked in television, it’s edited to create a good story, not necessarily a real story. Let’s stop these narratives on dog ownership that are SOLD to us and based on making money. Dogs aren’t a business they are our best friends. Remember that.

Your dog can be perfectly safe and happy without overstimulating daycare or doggy birthday parties. Those things are fun for some dogs, but not for all. I want to take my dog everywhere, I want to give my dog the things I would want, but for the love of dogs in shelters everywhere, let’s ask dogs what do they REALLY want?

Dogs want more sniffs, waterlogged sticks, a quiet place to decompress, a space to stretch their legs and you to respect their body language and boundaries. They are talking to you…listen.

POTENTIAL OWNER: How much is the puppy?
BREEDER: $3,000+ dollars.

POTENTIAL OWNER: What?? It's way too expensive!!

BREEDER: What do you think would be a good price?

POTENTIAL OWNER: No more than $500. You breeders are so overpriced.

BREEDER: I am sorry you see it this way; why don't you try it yourself?

POTENTIAL OWNER: But I've never done it!

BREEDER: For FREE, I can teach you how to do it, and you will also have the knowledge of how to do it again.

POTENTIAL OWNER: Perfect, thank you!

BREEDER: To start, you will need a female(average cost $3500 and up)and a male(average cost $3500 and up) or semen (average $2000-$2500 and up). You will need to do & pass OFA Breed specific OFA health testing on them, which averages about $800+ per dog.

Let's not forget progesterone testings, inseminations, ultrasounds, x-rays, semen collections, semen analysis, potentially semen overnight shipping, and so on ($1500+).
Raise and provide daily care, feeding & grooming for two years. (minimal $250 per month) Oh, don’t forget monthly prevention, annual vet visits, and any other additional vet visits.

POTENTIAL OWNER: But I don't have that much money...

BREEDER: For $1200, you can raise a litter and then keep one of the puppies. Obviously, you will pay the cost of whelping & care.

POTENTIAL OWNER: I can do that.

BREEDER: OK, so I have a female due to whelp in 2 weeks. You will need to be available 24/7 around the clock for at least 9-12 weeks to help with delivery and care. ( a million loads of laundry) Another 4-plus weeks to monitor mom and puppies.

POTENTIAL OWNER: twelve weeks?? It's way too much time for me! I have to work.

BREEDER: Plus, You will need to be available for puppy families to call you 24/7 with a worry or concern, no matter the age. You MUST also be ready to take back the puppy/dog at any age if the family has an unforeseen emergency.

BREEDER: You will also need the reproductive vet to do progesterone testing($110/ test ), X-ray to get headcount ($100) & C-section($1000-$5000 if needed), and initial vet care on pups until old enough to be placed ($800+).
Have on hand a scale, thermometer, latex gloves, puppy pads, incubator, oxygen concentrator, nebulizer, heating lamp, whelping box, puppy pen, blankets, toys, bowls, cleaning supplies, appropriate food with supplements for mothers, formula, medications & hand feeding supplies in case of emergency...

POTENTIAL OWNER: But I don't have all these things!

BREEDER: For $5000+, you can buy them.

POTENTIAL OWNER: Ummm .... You know, I think it might be better if I just buy a puppy.

BREEDER: Wise decision.
For us, there are no vacations or holidays; while you go to visit with family & friends, we are home at our dogs' side caring for them. It is a no-break commitment.

When you choose a reputable person, you aren’t only purchasing the puppy but also knowledge, support, experience, love, time, sacrifices, etc...
**Plus the cost of lifetime support to the puppy owners…
These numbers are just the tip of the iceberg, (best-case scenario!!!) As a reputable breeder who takes on this journey full-time!
