“Courtesy post”.. For those who choose not to spay or neuter their pets make it difficult for everyone else😤 Case in point: In this case the owner of a female pit bull allowed her to breed, and she gave birth to seven puppies several weeks ago. Not wanting to deal with them, the owner threatened to abandon them in the woods, which seems to be the preferred method of dealing with the pet overpopulation issue..😡

PSA: Spring is here and people are putting their small dogs a pups outside alone to potty. Please stay outside with them. Fence or no fence. It’s that time of year when Dog Fighters pay young thugs for every small dog or pup the can get. These dog thieves don’t always look like thieves or thugs. They open your gate, sn**ch the dogs and they don’t latch your gate. Misleading you into believing you must have left the gate open. You didn’t. Neither did your husband, child, etc. The dog thief did. You will never see your pup again because you couldn’t stand outside while your dog/pup pottied.

Please do home checks with follow up visit or visits and get vet references so they won’t end up like these pups, (that were offered for free, or for a low rehoming fee) they are locked up in kennels all day in their living room behind their couch or tied out to a tree with no shelter, food or water because of not being paid attention to while out there, bowls get knocked over🤬 (There is another little larger pup, in that other kennel). Witnessed yesterday 2/17/23 and also a few months prior, at a house in Diamomdhead.

🐾Adopted🐾 Courtesy post….. This is a neighbors dog, and her owner just passed away and his widow is unable to care for her. Her name is Harley, she’s a 4 year old mixed breed, medium size, weighing, about 45 pounds. She is a very sweet, gentle and energetic girl. She is spayed, house broken and obeys basic commands. She is an inside/outside dog, sleeps inside. Although she has a fenced yard, she is walked daily on a leash. Harley will make a great companion for an able bodied adult with or without children, unsure how she is with cats. I can help arrange meetings with potential adopter. Home visit, fenced yard and Vet reference are required. 🐾🥰

Please secure your animals BEFORE all of the fireworks begin. Never understand why people feel so shocked and unprepared when their animals (primarily dogs) are petrified and take off when they go out to potty and fireworks suddenly go off. SAME DATE EVERY YEAR!!This is not a new holiday celebration. Stop what you are doing and make sure all of your microchip information is correct and up to date! Put a collar and tag on your pets. Don’t let them out alone or unleashed to go potty. No matter how many reminders are posted in the days and week leading up to New Years, there still will be many missing pets. Guess what? This is no one else’s fault but your own for such carelessness.

TO REPORT NEGLECT OF PETS IN HANCOCK COUNTY, MS:*

Please call CENTRAL DISPATCH at 228-255-9191 to request that an ANIMAL CONTROL OFFICER perform a "welfare check" on a pet deprived of adequate shelter, food, or water or confined in a cruel manner. Please reference SECTION 97-41-16; Section 2(a) of the MISSISSIPPI DOG & CAT PROTECTION LAW (revised 2020) listed below ⬇️ when you call Central Dispatch, or when speaking to an Animal Control officer.

Be sure to provide the specific location of the pet in jeopardy (address, owner's name, if known, and visible landmarks near the location) and the nature of your complaint. Keep a record of dates, times, and details of when the pet has been deprived of basic care. Photographs and video are very effective in proving that neglect is ongoing. However, at NO time should anyone TRESPASS on private property to attain visual evidence!!!

NOTE: Animal Control only responds Mon-Fri 8am-5pm unless the situation is deemed an emergency.

*I am so appreciative of the texts, messages, phone calls, and tags in posts of pets in iminient threat due to the elements. However, I simply cannot respond to everyone. So, I hope the information provided will be helpful. If I have omitted any pertinent details, please add in the comments section, and I'll revise my post. THANK YOU!

Please stop trapping and relocating wildlife!

Nothing good ever comes from it. And you are not solving your issue as other wildlife will move in to fill the void you just created.

Most wildlife have a small range and an established territory.
By relocating, it would be like me kidnapping you and dumping you in an unfamiliar land where you don’t know the culture, you don’t speak the language and you hold no currency. You are hungry, thirsty and the local established colonies are out to kill you.

That’s what you are doing to these animals. Most don’t survive. And their ending is terrifying and brutal.

And if you are trapping a large female, she is most likely a mama and her kits will die without her.

And if that wasn’t bad enough, by relocating - you run the risk of translocating disease such as Distemper and Parvo to unvaccinated domestic pets and other wildlife in the area you are releasing the trapped animal in to.

Please, just stop! Learn to be better stewards. We CAN co-exist peacefully if you are willing to open your mind.

We hope this tip sheet helps everyone.

Turtles Terrorizing Ducks & Geese

For quite a while now there has been a problem with Snapping turtles maiming and/or killing the ducks in the large duck pond near the Community Center. The end of September, the SPCA received a frantic phone message from a resident who was witnessing a huge snapping turtle attack one of the domestic geese at the pond. The caller was terribly distressed reporting that the goose was struggling, screeching and her children were crying. Thelma spoke with Toni Grey, Vice President, about the incident. Since Toni lives adjacent to the pond, she explained that she had been aware of the problem for years and has wanted to do something about it. This is the first time a resident has asked for our help, so Toni proceeded to find a solution to the over population of the Snapping Turtles. Toni called the POA office and was told to contact Wildlife and Fisheries because the POA does not get involved with relocating wildlife. Subsequently, she spoke with Robert Jones of the Museum of Natural Sciences in Jackson. He understood the problem completely and even told her that he has a video of a Snapping Turtle grabbing a porcupine, killing it and eating it. He explained that these turtles can grow to be 50 pounds or more and the females can lay up to 100 eggs. Mr. Jones wrote a letter to the POA office explaining the process that could be followed to reduce the population of the Snapping Turtles. He recommended a professional trapper affiliated with USM in Hattiesburg. The POA office reiterated their position regarding the relocation of wildlife. Toni felt that she needed to bring the problem to the attention of the POA Board. They invited her to speak at the POA Membership meeting on October 19. Toni began her address by reminding everyone that the pond was a beautiful and peaceful introduction to Diamondhead and that families love feeding the ducks and geese. She noted that currently there is only one duck, one little mallard, three Muscovy's, one of which is limping and six domestic geese, two of which are crippled. She explained to the residents that the turtles would not be killed....only relocated. The trapper will not remove all the turtles, just reduce the population. The S.P.C.A. agreed to pay the trapper’s fee and all she needed from the POA Board was their approval. The Board did approve the proposal with the caveat that the trapper is self-insured and that he will sign a release of liability from the POA. Unfortunately, the weather has turned too cool to trap turtles effectively now because they descend to the bottom of the pond for the winter. They will ascend in the Spring. The trapper has scheduled the job for March.
