OK Colorado! I'm hoping someone in our network can help...Frankie the Chihuahua needs a new foster home. He's easily overwhelmed and needs a low-stress and experienced foster home. Please reach out to POSO Dog Rescue if you know someone who would be a great fit for Frankie

The art of doing nothing: something some dogs need help learning. For a big, excitable dog like Zeus, learning to settle in his own is important. Here he is practicing his behavioral down protocol. I'm not sure how that first position was comfy (yes, he's on two levels), but that's OK! 😂

Cases of poor genetic temperament aside, so much of gnarly puppy behavior is a result of being over-tired and over-stimulated. Your puppy should be getting 18-20 hours of sleep per day...that's 4-5hrs of TOTAL awake time in 24hrs! And passing out on the floor is not the same as a dedicated, quiet, undisturbed crate nap. You put your baby in a crib for a good nap because you know it's better rest than passing out in the playroom...do the same for your pup and the difference in general disposition should be noticeable.

Tired.
Your puppy is tired.
The most common call I get for puppies is that the puppy gets out of control at times, and is biting the owners. I used to laugh and think "how could a tiny puppy be such a tyrant?". But then I saw it, time and again. It's not hard to fix. Typically ignoring the puppy won't stop it, squealing OW won't stop it, holding the dog's mouth shut won't stop it, and for sure the stupid alpha roll won't stop it.
You let the puppy get far, far too tired and didn't put it up, then it gets all wound up. Puppies need 20+ hours of sleep a day. Get your puppy out of the crate or exercise pen, potty it, feed it if needed, and play with it for a bit. Then put it back in the crate. If the puppy falls asleep within 5 minutes it was tired. Let puppy sleep an hour or two then get it out again and repeat the cycle. Puppies shouldn't be left out to get all worked up, and practice pottying in out of the way places, and shred your possessions. Put the puppy up. A lot of the nipping will just go away as the puppy matures. If you're in Dallas Fort Worth area and you need a plan and help with your new puppy contact me.

A good read.

🚫 Essentially, stay away from rawhide and cheap, artificially colored/ flavored treats

🎀GOOD items: freeze dried whole animal parts (pizzle, trachea, etc) and limited ingredient treats.

Every holiday season there are many exciting looking treats and chews marketed to include our dog we love so much in our holiday celebrations. However, the majority of these cheap treats are "gifts" that are actually wrapped up veterinary bills and long term health damage.

I could type a never ending list of products and brands I would not trust for my own dogs to eat but for now we will start with my top 2 of my Naughty List!

More information on the mysterious canine respiratory illness popping up around the country.
We suggest taking precautions such as avoiding dog parks and doggy daycare, be sure your dog is up to date on vaccines, and if you need to board, please ask the facility what precautions they are taking as well. And of course, if your dog starts coughing, keep a close eye on them and contact your vet.

Scientists at the University of New Hampshire may have identified a pathogen that has sickened possibly thousands of dogs and killed some of them across the country.

HOWL-O-WEEN Safety Tip # 5: People often MISS their dog's communication of stress! 🫣

⚠️Tolerating ≠ Enjoyment

We love our pups and want them to enjoy the things we enjoy, yet we sometimes overlook subtle signs from our dogs that they may not be enjoying the activities as much as we are.

🐶Stiff body language, being extra amped up or on high alert, attempting to leave the room/area, looking "pitiful" in their costume (this is avoidance behavior), disinterest in hanging with everyone, etc... If you notice your dog acting "off", consider giving them a break from the costume and activities, and give them a safe and comfy spot to decompress. Your pup will thank you! 🐶😉

HOWL-O-WEEN Safety Tip # 4: Candy can make your dog very sick!

🍬🍫Consuming candy and/or their wrappers will give your dog a stomach ache, at a minimum.
❌Chocolate, especially semi-sweet and dark chocolate, can cause more serious GI upset, and even neurological or heart problems.
❌Xylitol, a sugar substitute (sometimes call Birch Sugar), often found in sugar-free candy and gum, is HIGHLY toxic to dogs in small amounts and can cause seizures or even death.

🐶Keep your dog safe this Halloween and keep ALL candy out of paws' reach, especially when kids are sorting through everything and have things scattered about!
