There is TicTok, and then there is the tick-tock countdown of days and hours for the clock to alarm that the day of the highly anticipated dog show of the year is upon us!
This clanging of the bell will be for the biggest dog show of the year; I am talking about the Ed Sullivan, “really big show,” canine extravaganza right up the pike from where I am pecking away at my keyboard right at this minute. This place is in my cozy Chambray Acres, Miami, Florida home.
That’s the place I have called home for 50 years now………….if you are into dogs, that other ‘must-be-destination’ for that King Kong of a dog show, well, that is the AKC Royal Canin Week of Dog Shows in O Town, Fl………..a.k.a. Orlando Magic City, Florida.
So come hellacious knee-deep water, snapping turtle cold weather, sudden-burst sky-illuminating solar flares, or melting Milky Way Bars………keep in mind that Mars also owns Royal Canin……….. we, as in Johanna, Jessi, and me, the Little Old Wine Maker, Sandy will be trekking north 250 miles as Poe’s Raven flies, till we hit Mickey’s ‘In Plain Sight Hideaway’.
Many of our Chambray and Facebook followers have been asking the hot burning bush question of ‘porque?” this canine congregation carries so much more weight than all the rest of the dog show events that have transpired throughout the year.
Well, this is where the top breeders of all breeds gather to showcase their kennel’s top-of-the-morning gems.
A Best Of Breed win here speaks tomes about a breeding program compared to the Grandfather doggie event in terms of longevity and notoriety, the Westminster offering!
That Big Apple affair is more suited for exhibitors and owners, who then revel in the following human-oriented hoopla and celebratory hootenanny for millennia to come.
So, here are some of the occurrences that may take place when our dogs enter that vaulted and revered Royal Canin ring with those dogs that will be at the leading end of the leash, with the Herzons and Team Chambray trying to keep up around the vastly ample rings…… with miles and miles before we stop on a snowy evening between the woods and frozen lake, somewhere very far away.
For us, leading the charge of the light brigade will be our champions, or better stated in dog show-like gymnastic linguistics, “our specials.”
Specials are champions that are campaigned by their breeder and or owner, perhaps with a prominent pro handler to master the ring around the Rosie against all the other similarly title-adorned champions of AKC record with their chosen handlers in tow, all going tete-a-tete for the highest bestowment from each breed ring, the coveted Golden Fleece of canine awards, the bi-colored blue, yellow oversized Best Of Breed rosettes.
The Chambray Leader of the Pack, broooom, broooom, is appropriately named and adorned with titles, Bronze Grand Ch Chambrays Emperior Maximus Ben Tank’d On The Boulevard.
He is that Chambray dog that rightfully owns that ‘specials’ designation by being the winningest Chambray dog for 2023.
Maxi is the flag bearer for all the other Chambray dogs present at this meeting of the best of the best of each breed of dog, each dog vying to be the King of the Mountain of all those top Labrador kennels/breeders that bring their prized dogs.
All hoping one of their pooches takes over the zenith spot atop that mythical higher peak……………all of them, arriving at this sacred destination from hither and yonder, domestic and foreign locations as well……………all ah-wishing and ah-hoping they end up high, sitting pretty with their dog, the owner/breeder/exhibitor/handler queenly/kingly waving down towards all those others that didn’t quite make it to the top of the canine Mt Everest with their dogs.
Joining Maxi in that merry-go-round in the special's ring of the Who’s Who of Labradors is another Chambray Grand Champion……………GrCh Chambrays You Mystify Me, also joined by a third dog, GCh Soflo Have You Ever Seen a Ghost…………he doesn’t sport the Chambray kennel name.
However, he is linked by his Rich Red Royal Blood, making him one of the dogs that are part of the ‘Chambray Hood,’ as his sire is the one and only Silver GrCh Chambrays Duke Destined For Greatness!
Those watching from the Chock Full Of Nuts seating around the vast-tundra-like rings, those seats more than likely, lined up two and three chairs deep…………….with assuredly standing room behind the third layer, will need to wait to see these earlier-mentioned specials for about two, to three hours, as there will 67 class males and class females, vying in the preliminary rounds of Winners Dog and Winners Female awards for the day.
With all those class dogs present and accounted for, it will tally up to make 5-Pt Majors wins for both the lucky Winners Dog and the Winners Female.
Here is a list of Awards and Designations from this super, duper, must-be-at canine event from the Breed Ring competition.
Starting at the top:
Best Of Breed ~ The top breed award. The winner receives one point for every Labrador that competed there that day. If all the entered Labs are there and compete, then the Breed count is 103 dogs/points for Breed Rankings.
Since Grand Champion points are also in place, BOB would receive the maximum 5-Gr Champion points for Grand Champion Points Ranks.
For All-Breed Rankings (Sporting Group Rankings), the winning BOB would carry those points into the Sporting Group competition.
If it receives ANY GROUP PLACEMENT, from Group 1 to a Group 4, it would receive beaucoup points that get added up for those breeds of dogs that it beats by having a placement over those breeds under the Labrador Retriever.
Best Of Opposite S*x (BOS) ~ This is an ‘if’ award. If a male wins BOB, then a female dog is awarded BOS, flipside, if a Female wins BOB, then a male is chosen BOS.
Whether male or female, BOS only receives points towards the Grand Champion Ranking from members of its own gender.
There is nothing for groups since only the BOB winner competes in the Group. Grand Champion points are awarded to the BOS, according to how many of the same gender that dog wins against that day.
Winners Dog ~ Winners Female ~ Here, one male and one female are chosen as the winners of the points towards their AKC champion’s title.
Those points are based on the AKC Points Schedule for 15 different Divisions that fly about the country, including Alaska, Hawaii, and Puerto Rico.
Florida is in Division 4, jumbled up with Georgia and South Carolina, and it is one of the higher ‘weighted’ divisions for achieving a Major Pointed win.
In fact, Florida in Division 4 and California in Division 9 have similar requirements for winning the first of the majors, which is a 3-Pt Major.
BEST OF WINNERS, the judge chooses between the two above dogs, the Winner's Dog and the Winner's Female, for which one is the best example of the breed. Only if the WD or a WB also wins the Best Of Breed award do they receive BOB points, and that dog may compete in the Sporting Groups for All-Breed Points.
For Grand Champion Rankings, extra dogs can be awarded GrCh Points. The judge can grant a second dog to the BOB winner as Select GrCh and an award to the dog that is second to BOS, a Select GrCh as well.
At big-to-do show/shows, such as the Royal Canin and the Friday LRC Labrador Specialty, with large entries, special awards are given to a certain number of dogs based on how many dogs are entered. The judge grants these as ‘Awards of Merits’.
For an All-Breed Dog Show, the award is added at the back end of the dog’s name as JAMS, which stands for Judges Award of Merit at Show.
On Friday, the LRC Labrador specialty, the JAMS award, will be known as a JAMSS……………the two S’s stand for Specialty Show.
The dog that wins the Best Of Breed at a Specialty also has an additional title designation, BISS, which stands for Best In Specialty Show, and that title gets to adorn the dog’s first name.
Now armed with all the preceding information, the countdown for the blastoff of the 'really big' show is on, and it won’t be long before December 12th dawns upon us for the Royal Canin spectacular celebration of dogs.
