This charming gentleman is Willie Nelson, a friend of our Richmond crew. Late last year, his owner noticed he was eating slowly, having some trouble swallowing, and had swollen lymph nodes in his neck. A Fine Needle Aspirate was performed, where a small needle is inserted into the lymph node, and the cells extracted are looked at under a microscope. In his case, this provided a diagnosis of B-Cell Lymphoma. Lymphoma is a form of cancer that arises from lymphocytes, a type of white blood cell. These cells circulate throughout the bloodstream and are also found in the bone marrow, spleen, lymph nodes, and other tissues. Many patients do not yet have symptoms at the time of diagnosis and may only have prominent swelling of their peripheral lymph nodes. Willie Nelson’s family chose to pursue a multi-agent chemotherapy protocol, L-CHOP-CCNU-MOPP. This is the current “gold standard” treatment for lymphoma. Willie Nelson always arrived at his appointments carrying an emotional support toy in his mouth, and shamelessly begging for snacks. Willie, and his supportive owners, did amazingly well throughout treatment. While Willie has now graduated and is 🎤🎵 “On the Road Again”, we will still get to see our buddy for regular monitoring, so we can catch any early signs of him coming out of remission. Congratulations Willie Nelson!

Meet our friend, Boofus! He is a 6-year-old, handsome, happy and waggy, sweetheart of a pit bull mix. We first met Boof in February after he had a mass removed from the wrist area on his front leg. Testing on the mass was suggestive of Mast Cell Cancer. Mast cells are part of the normal immune system and reside throughout the body and skin. If these cells become cancerous, they can develop discrete raised masses. These tumors contain special substances such as histamine, heparin, and serotonin, which can cause the skin or gastrointestinal tract to become red, irritated, or ulcerated. Mast cell tumors can spread to the liver, spleen, bone marrow, and lymph nodes, so we usually recommend additional diagnostics (aspirates and abdominal ultrasound) as part of the work-up. In Boofus's case, he had a grade II/low grade mast cell tumor, and despite a fantastic surgical approach, this mass was incompletely excised, meaning residual microscopic cancer cells were left behind. Dr. Kenny recommended Boofus begin treatment with an injectable chemotherapy agent called Vinblastine. Boofus recently completed his 8th Vinblastine treatment and has formally graduated from treatment! We will continue to see Boofus here at TOS Richmond for regular exams to monitor him for any signs of recurrence. Happy Graduation, Boofus!

This is Penny, our sweet friend who has a lot to celebrate! Penny first visited our Richmond location in February after surgery to remove an abdominal mass. The mass was submitted for biopsy, which returned a diagnosis of Leiomyosarcoma. These are malignant tumors of smooth muscle tissue and are the second most common intestinal tumors in dogs. Leiomyosarcomas have a moderate risk of metastasis, and when coupled with Penny’s young age, our recommendation was a chemotherapy treatment protocol with Doxorubicin. Penny had 5 doses of Doxorubicin, given 3 weeks apart, which she just completed. Penny’s follow up imaging was clear, and she will only need to visit us for monitoring. Congratulations Penny!

Congratulations to Clover and her wonderful family! Clover first came to our Richmond location in September 2023, after her owner discovered that her lymph nodes were enlarged. She was diagnosed with B-Cell Lymphoma and began a CHOP-CCNU-MOPP protocol. Clover's fuzzy face and sweet, playful personality quickly made her a favorite among the doctors and staff. We have enjoyed spending time with our "perfect" little Clover, and are so happy to be a part of her care, and see her graduate!

The month of February is dedicated to raising awareness about the importance of pet dental health! 🦷
Dentals play a crucial role in the health of your pets by not only deeply cleaning their teeth but allowing your veterinary team to perform thorough oral examinations. This helps us identify any potential problems or abnormalities early on, such as lesions or tumors!

Happy Graduation, Saya! Saya finished the last stretch in her treatment journey on Halloween! After being diagnosed with injection site sarcoma in May of this year, Saya had surgery to amputate her left hind limb. Following her surgery and biopsy report, we learned that her cancer was more aggressive than we had initially hoped; subsequently, both radiation therapy and chemotherapy were recommended to control her cancer. Saya started injectable chemotherapy with TOS Richmond immediately following surgery and also visited TOS Leesburg for several weeks to have 18 individual rounds of radiation before finishing her injectable chemotherapy treatments with TOS Richmond in late October! As you can tell, Saya and her family both had a lot of fight in them throughout the last 5 months as they powered through her numerous visits to The Oncology Service locations to complete her treatment plan. TOS Leesburg and TOS Richmond are extremely proud of her and grateful to her family for allowing us to be apart of her treatment!
Saya is pictured here with Dr. Waite, Nicki, and Angela.

Without our teams of amazing Veterinarians, Specialists, Licensed Veterinary Technicians, Veterinary Assistants, and Client Care staff, where would we be? It takes time, energy, and dedication to excel at anything, but in Oncology, it also takes 💖 HEART 💖. Our teams have that in spades and we are so grateful to get to share our days with them.

Say hello to Dr. Kenny! TOS Richmond welcomed Dr. Kenny to our staff last week, and she has hit the ground running overseeing the care of many patients that have come through our doors. She is pictured here checking the positioning of sweet little Trudy before her CT scan. Trudy is an adorable 6-year-old bulldog who was seen by Dr. Kenny for a consultation for a soft tissue sarcoma removed from her eyebrow, and a CT scan was recommended for further staging and potential surgical planning. Trudy handled the anesthesia necessary for a CT scan beautifully and cruised through the scan and recovery with no complications. Thank you Commonwealth Animal Hospital for referring such a sweet patient!

Happy National Mutt Day from some of our TOS Team members and their "mutts" ❤️!

This month, the team in Richmond made some very special new friends. Frank, a rambunctious English Bulldog with a periocular nerve sheath tumor, found the toy bin as soon as he walked in and threw Elmo to himself during his physical exam. River, a recently diagnosed Golden Retriever with lymphoma, made an immediate connection with Cassandra and demanded scritches the whole time he was here. Welcome to the TOS family, boys! 🥰
Nothing like some butt scratchies! After a splenectomy and abdominal exploratory surgery for splenic hemangiosarcoma, 11-year old Marcel is still happy as can be. Dr. Tidd and the team in Springfield were happy to hear he has been feeling well at home since his surgery. As you can see, he does a little dance when he is getting pets and we just adore him! 🕺
