For today's we thought we'd pass on our suggestion from a recent client question.
Aubrey is a senior, and her mom was looking to get a new comfortable harness with a handle, so that the humans in the house could assist Aubrey with her balance when needed. I suggested the Truelove soft padded harness with handle as an economical option, and the Ruffwear Web Master harness as a more expensive option. The Help 'Em Up Harness has dual handles for the front and back of the dog, and is made specifically for this sort of support. Do you have a favorite harness with a handle?

Adopting and Caring for Your New Rescue Dog! - Tip # 3
Go Slow

Many times, you don't know a lot about your new dog's past. They may not have worn a collar before, they may not have ever walked on a leash or a sidewalk or even gone up and down stairs. Everything is new to them.
If you have a yard, let them get used to that first. Go slow and use treats!

Today, as part of our Friday Favorites (where we talk about our favorite dog and dog training items in the world) our literary ambassadogs want to tell you about Wendy Lyons Sunshine's book. I was honored to be interviewed, along with others, by Wendy in her research for this book. The title is "Tender Paws: How Science-Based Parenting Can Transform Our Relationship with Dogs" and it is a great tool for your dog parenting toolbox!

Adopting and Caring for Your New Rescue Dog - Tip # 2 -

When you bring your new dog home, keep things low key for a little while. Let them get used to your home. Wait for family and friends to visit, and wait to go to new places. There's plenty of time for other new experiences (remember, your home is a new experience for them!).

When you first bring your newly adopted dog home, remember to give them space. You don’t need to kiss and hug them. Let them have some time in new surroundings. Even if they come to you and sniff, they still may not be ready for petting. Personal space is a great thing.

Incorporating the Five Freedoms into Dog Training

Training your dog isn't just about teaching cues—it's about ensuring their overall well-being. By incorporating the Five Freedoms, you can create a nurturing and supportive environment for your dog Here's how:

Freedom from Hunger and Thirst: Always provide fresh water and nutritious meals. Use positive reinforcement with healthy treats during training to motivate and reward.

Freedom from Discomfort: Ensure your dog has a comfortable place to rest and sleep. Avoid harsh collars or training tools that cause pain or discomfort.

Freedom from Pain, Injury, or Disease: Regular vet check-ups and a safe training environment prevent injuries. Use gentle training methods to avoid causing stress or harm.

Freedom to Express Normal Behaviour: Allow your dog to engage in natural behaviours like sniffing, exploring, and socialising. Incorporate play and mental stimulation in your training routine.

Freedom from Fear and Distress: Use positive, reward-based training techniques. Avoid punishment-based methods that can cause fear and anxiety. Create a calm, positive atmosphere for your dog's learning.

By embracing the Five Freedoms in dog training, we can help our dogs lead happier, healthier lives. Feel free to share your experiences or tips on how you incorporate the Five Freedoms into your dog's training! 🐕✨

A lot of my clients seem to be very uncomfortable with the idea of separating their dog and child for safety reasons. But I recently had an epiphany - they all assumed that separation was the same as isolation. And it's not.

Using management strategies, such as using a pen to contain a child during mealtime (or to prevent the dog from begging or stealing food), provide separation between the dog and child. But neither the dog or child is isolated. Everyone can still see each other. The parent can still interact with everyone. And with time and patience, everyone can be very comfortable and safe with such an arrangement.

So now, I am always reminding clients that "Separation is not the same as isolation." It's simply a way for parents to function and do the impossibly difficult job of raising kids and dogs together.

Share your photos of dogs or kids in pens or behind barriers please!

We must always respect the dog's fear for something. Even if we know it won't hurt them they don't. Respect, then careful introduction through skilled coaching at the dog's pace should always be our aim for a scared dog.

If your dog has no problem with fireworks, we are happy for you!
Many dogs have adverse reactions to the big boom booms and firey smells, so we will be checking in with some tips and concrete things you can do.
If you normally walk your dog when it’s dark, make a plan to walk them earlier! If they are uncomfortable or scared, they will probably be most comfortable indoors. Keep your dog feeling safe.
