Yorke Family Harvest Hi! We are the Yorke Family.

We are passionate about growing and preserving our own food, keeping honey bees, foraging, homeschooling our children, living more sustainably, and sharing what we have learned with others.

Sneaking in a rainy day hive inspection, queen bee understood the assignment! These bees they are raising now will be of winter physiology and keep the colony alive until they can forage for spring flowers.

We harvested the last of this year's honey yesterday, and today we are letting the bees clean the leftover residue off the frames. Honey is sticky stuff, but the bees do an excellent job stripping the frames!

Summer flower season! What are your favorite flowers to grow? I grew dahlias, zinnias, and bachelors buttons from seed this year. I'm also growing calendula and yarrow for their herbal benefits. The sunflowers self seed and pop up all over. I would love to add more flowers to our small homestead next year, so tell me what your favorites are! 💐🌻🌹🌼

What are you making with your garden goodies lately?

Our tomatoes are starting to come in from the garden, but we don't have enough to can yet. I know we can freeze them to can later, but my 6 year old came up with an idea to use some fresh ones for our lunch today and he successfully pulled it off with minimal help! Proud mama moment!

Featuring homegrown tomatoes, basil, and garlic from our garden and served over fettuccine noodles! It was delicious!

RIP Dumbledough. 😭

He taught me so much during his tenure in my kitchen. Unfortunately, the oven was not properly checked before preheating today, and Dumbledough met an untimely demise.

Now I'm trying to make my discard into a starter and hope for the best! Make my day better and help me name my new starter! My top contender is Gandoughlf the White, but I'm open to other suggestions!

Look at all the beautiful basil! I had fun planting several different varieties this year, and now I get to smell the enticing aroma every day when walk past.

I'm getting ready to make a big batch pesto and I also want to preserve some in salt. What are some of your favorite ways to use and preserve basil?

Our 3 year old ran in the living room tonight with a huge grin on his face.

"Mommy! I found a flower! A giant one!"

Of course I had to follow him out to the garden, and, sure enough, we saw the first sunflower of the season!

That got me thinking, did you know that sunflowers are a bit of a controversial topic in gardening?

Some people say that you shouldn't palnt sunflowers in your garden because of allelopathic properties, which means that sunflowers can surpress things growing around them by releasing certain chemicals. While science does point to this in some instances, I have not found allelopathy to be an issue in our garden. We have had sunflowers self-seed in our main garden bed for years without any perceived ill-effects. In fact, I think the benefits of sunflowers far outweigh the risks. Pollinators love them. Birds love them. Three year old love them. I love them too!

What about you? Are you team sunflower, or would you rather grow something else in their place? I'd love to hear your experience growing these happy giants!

It has been a busy week at around the homestead! 👩‍🌾🧑‍🌾

I've been harvesting, canning, and baking sourdough. 🥒🍞

Jared did a hive inspection to check mite loads. He also removed and relocated a bee swarm from a friend's tree. I wish I had a picture of him up on the ladder! 🌳🐝

We worked together to bottle the rest of the honey we have pulled. Message us if you'd like a bottle and we can arrange pickup or dropoff! 🍯💛

Some up close beekeeping!

If you look closely, you may notice a cell in the middle of the frame that is uncapped with a white pupa in it. Sometimes the bees will check on developing brood cells to see if there are any varroa mites inside. Varroa mites are a major threat to colonies since they weaken the bees over time. If no mites are found, the bees will re-cap the cell and let the pupa finish developing.

So cool to see this on a hive inspection today!

Jared stayed up late extracting last night which means we'll be bottling more honey sometime this week!

This will probably be the last honey we pull for a while due to the summer dearth. Our last batch of jars went fast, so don't wait too long if you want to try some Yorke Family Harvest honey!

Message us or comment below to set up pick up or delivery (Ft. Wayne only). Our jars hold 1 lb of raw honey and cost $10 each.

The elderflowers are blooming in our part of Indiana! While the elderberries may be more famous in the natural herbal remedy world, elderflowers have several health benefits as well. And as an added bonus, they smell amazing!

Once you know what to look for, you may spy elder bushes growing along the edges of woods. Birds love the berries and often help the bushes spread. See if you can spot one the next time you're driving in the country!

Garlic scapes are one of the most whimsical parts of the garden. Their swirly whirly loops always make me smile!

I snapped the garlic scapes off this evening to help our plants put all of their energy into the bulb instead of flowering. Now we can use the scapes to make all kinds of vibrant garlicy treats! Yum!

Thank you to everyone who tried to guess how many honey bottles came in our massive shipment!

The correct number was... 290! No one nailed the number exactly, but Sandy Jordan was the closest with her guess of 300!

If you were not the closest guess but you would like to buy some honey, send us a message!

Our new jars will hold 1 lb. of honey and will cost $10 for local (Fort Wayne area), raw, unfiltered honey!
