Socialization doesn’t mean playing!

Well…it doesn’t mean ONLY playing. True socialization is having happy, new experiences. This could mean playtime, but it could also be exploratory time pairing new props, sounds, etc. with high-value treats.

This is a no-force activity. We allow puppies some freedom to investigate new things and enjoy yummy snacks in the process. If the puppy likes the treats, it will help them like the object by pairing them together in a gentle way.

We explore LOTS of things in my puppy kindergarten classes, because we want the babies to grow into confident adults. And you know what? It makes the class even more FUN!

Speaking of classes (here’s my shameless plug😜,) September classes start SOON . Send a DM here and we’ll get your pup registered!

This page is all about learning and support. It’s a bit more laid back and possibly a smidge more on the goofy side. 🤪 If you haven’t heard about PupTalk yet, keep reading ⬇️.

We have a new AFFORDABLE option for canine assistance - PupTalk!

PupTalk is a multidimensional service, and we’ll be rolling out different parts in stages. Our first stage is a more affordable alternative to private training that’s available to anyone in the world.

This option can be a standalone service, or it can be combined with private training (virtual or in-person) for more challenging needs. It’s also perfect for dog walkers or pet sitters who have rotating or regular clientele.

We really want to make help more affordable for everyone. Please share to help other dog parents. 🐕 (We just might offer you a launch discount code when you share in your stories.)

Hear me out! Garlic isn’t the demon we’ve been told it is. Garlic has the unfortunate luck of being related to the onion, which IS toxic. Darn family ties! 😅

The toxic component is called thiosulfate, and onions contain about 15x more than garlic. Conversely, garlic contains allicin, which is good for cardiovascular health. You’ll even see it in commercial dog foods because of this. (Have you checked your labels lately?)

Fresh garlic is ideal, and there is a recommended dosage for this. In my house, Toby would get 1 1/2 cloves, and Kado would get 2 cloves.

Are dog trainers too expensive? Yes, I’m honestly asking, and I genuinely want your opinion.

Dog training is an investment, but it’s an investment for all parties.

The dog parents invest their emotions, mental health, and time and energy in most cases. They might spend hours with a dog trainer trying to conquer a problem. They hopefully spend even more time with their dog practicing on their own. Of course, they spent the money to be with that trainer and money for treats, driving to locations, or accessories, too. There is a lot of investment for those pet parents.

The trainers not only invest their emotions, time, and energy into the sessions but also into learning. Those who are credentialed have probably invested thousands of dollars to gain the knowledge they have. Those of us who obtained college or graduate degrees have invested much more. On top of that, just because we attained the certification does not mean that we are finished. Some of those “pieces of paper” require us to do continuing education hours and renewals. Renewals can cost hundreds.

What about the dog? He’s investing time, energy, trust, etc. Dog training requires a holistic investment of all parties involved.

Still, we usually consider the investment to be cost related and often use that as our determining factor. So, I ask again…. Is dog training too expensive?

Hi, I’m Heather! It’s nice to meet you!

It’s been a while since I’ve done an introductory post, so here are a few more info snippets to get to know me better:

- I’m the lead trainer here at Atta Pup, but I sometimes will have assistants, volunteers, interns, or student trainers helping me.
- I’ve worked to obtain multiple certifications and degrees, including: MS, LBS, CPDT-KA, PMCT, FSG-1, and CGC Evaluator.
- In my past life, I was a therapeutic horsemanship instructor. I’m one of few who actually hold a bachelor’s degree for it.
- I’ve also held three positions working in mental health.
- I volunteer remotely with .assistance.dogs (a highly affordable service dog organization.)
- Dogs are cool, but they aren’t the only animals I train. My rabbit does tricks, too.
- Being outdoors makes me happy, but I’m rarely alone. Both my husky and lizard have gone kayaking with me.

What about you? Tell me about you or your pets in the comments!

I made so many mistakes! For the trainer am today, you would be surprised at what I thought was okay in the beginning of my life with Toby. Now, that doesn't mean I prescribed to everything, but I considered them to be acceptable. That means I wasn't what I should have been. I didn't meet my full potential as a dog mom. Don't believe me? Well, l'm probably the reason Toby doesn't like spray bottles.

Did believing in those other methods make me a bad guardian? No! It made me naive, uneducated, or unaware, but never a bad dog mom. It gave me room to grow!

If you're just starting out in your life with your dog, it can be really overwhelming. There are so many resources out there, but obviously some of them are no longer accurate or considered best practice. How are you supposed to know which ones to trust?

If this sounds like you, drop a comment below. I'll send you the link to my Amazon book list and help you get started on the right path.

Do you ever feel like you just aren’t good enough as a parent? Maybe your work schedule is nuts, or you just don’t have much money right now, but it doesn’t take a lot to make your dog’s life better.

Try putting the phone down for five minutes, three times a day, and do one of these activities:

- Let your dog sniff something new.
- Teach your dog an easy trick (like spin.)
- Play “find it” by tossing a treats and having your dog find each one.
- Walk in a new section of the neighborhood.
- Make an easy snack to share with your dog.
- Teach your dog to nose target (“Teach Your Dog a Dolphin Trick,” on my YouTube channel.)
- Have a cuddle session on the couch (if your dog likes cuddles.)
- Give your dog a massage.

You get the idea! Just implementing these things in short bursts throughout your day/week will level up your dog parent game!

If your dog inhales his food, this post is for you!

Inhaling food isn’t great for a dog’s digestion, but it’s also a missed enrichment opportunity! Slow them down and boost their brains at the same time by making them work for their meals. Here are a few ideas:

1) DIY food puzzles
a) Towel Wrap - spread out a towel, sprinkle food all over, roll/twist/tie in a knot, and give to the dog
b) Muffin Tin - Put food in the bottom of a muffin tin and cover up with tennis balls

2) Box searches - There are a lot of ways to do this, but you basically just hide food in one or more boxes and let your dog find it. Traditionally, you only hide food in one amidst a bunch of empty boxes.

3) Scavenger hunts - Inside or out, hide food morsels for your dog to find. Keep in mind that outside will probably be harder, and this will likely enhance their scavenging superpowers.

Pro tip: Supervise your dog at least the first few times they work for their food in a new way. Make sure you understand their method before you leave them alone.

Does your dog work for their food? What is their favorite style?

Pet tip! Big events like fireworks, thunderstorms, or eclipses may be fun and fascinating for humans, but they can be scary and confusing for our pets. It’s not like we can explain them to our pets and help them understand they will be okay. We can only do our best to prepare their environment to be a safe place.

Here are some tips to help your pet during these times:

1) Get your pet exercise earlier in the day.

2) Make sure all potty and outside playtime breaks are finished at least 15-20 BEFORE the event, just in case it starts early.

3) Prepare a safe and secure spot, such as a crate or bedroom, and review safety protocol and pet care procedures with your family or sitter. Make sure any pet tags are up-to-date and secured to your pet.

4) Give your pet something to do during the event. There are numerous enrichment examples for various species online and on our social media accounts.

5) Check on your pet throughout the event, and sit with them if they are scared. If this means you miss out, then consider yourself an A+ pet parent. (You can probably watch it online, anyway.)

Did we miss anything? Post your tips in the comments!

If you’ve been looking for a training class that isn’t after dark, we’ve got you! Daytime class starts tomorrow at 11:30a.

This will be an all ages class. Don’t worry, though! Puppies will be going over appropriate socialization practices in addition to skills. Likewise, adults will receive the same basic manners curriculum they would normally have.

While all are welcome, this class is ideal for stay-at-home-moms, retired seniors, and those who work late shifts. Here at Atta Pup!, we try to work with all schedules!

Caring for a puppy is hard, but caring for a senior dog can be just as challenging… and heart wrenching. I don’t know about you, but I struggle when our seniors start to lose abilities, they once had. I just want my dog to be back to normal.🥺

Unfortunately, that’s not the way life works. As our seniors get older, they start showing signs of age. The good news is, if you have them as a puppy, you’ve already seen some of these things before. You already know how to deal with them.

As our dogs age, we might start seeing a regression in potty training. This one isn’t so much that they don’t know what to do; they just may not be able to make it to the bathroom in time or may not be able to control what’s happening. Puppy pads or even diapers, can be your best friend... and so can washable mopheads. 😄

We also start returning to a time of increased supervision. This could be to keep them safe because things are physically more difficult, maybe they are now becoming a little bit more clingy, or perhaps we’re watching them for potty purposes.

Lastly, we may see a change in their cognitive abilities. They might start to do things that don’t make any sense. Believe it or not, doggy dementia is a real thing.

Despite these challenges, it’s our job to love them until the very last day. They gave us love for every day of their lives. It’s our job to do the same.

💩Potty Training….Oh, boy💩

Some dogmoms and dogdads really struggle with potty train their puppies. Fortunately, they’re sometimes just making simple mistakes that are easy to fix.

1️⃣ One common issue I hear is that a puppy will be outside for a long time and then come back inside and potty almost immediately on the floor. Here’s what often happens… The puppy was allowed to go outside and have too much initial freedom to sniff, explore, and play. While I am all for letting puppies enjoy their environment, they should have a structured outing first, on leash, to help them focus. Once they have done their business to your satisfaction, they can be allowed to play and romp around. It makes a great reward! If they don’t do their business within a couple minutes, no playtime. Just bring them inside and know that you will be going right back outside within a minute or two. Pro tip - use words like “potty” OR “play” when you first step out to help them learn what to expect.

2️⃣ Puppies need constant supervision when they’re inside. If we give them too much freedom, we may end up with accidents all over the house. Likewise, if we yell at them for having an accident, we may now get a puppy who still potties in the house but tries to hide it. That’s a pretty unpleasant surprise once you finally do find it. We suggest keeping the puppy in an ex-pen, a crate, dragging a leash so you can find them quickly, or clipped to your belt loop. The closer you are to your puppy, the higher likelihood you have of catching his cues that indicate he might have to go to the bathroom.

3️⃣ Puppies often need to go outside after they have been running around and playing. Enough physical activity can stimulate body systems and cause the dog to go potty. Once you’re done playing, it’s best to just assume he will have to go and get him outside before he goes in the house.

28/01/2024

Puppy teeth are SHARP. When they nip, it HURTS! But it’s normal…right? Well, yes, but that doesn’t mean we let them bite us.

If a puppy tries to go after your hands or your ankles, remove them. This might look like sitting on your hands or putting your feet up on a chair. The more a puppy can practice biting something, the more likely he is to find it gratifying and repeat the behavior later. Along these lines, the last thing we want to do is tease or play with our puppies by wiggling our fingers in front of their mouths. This only encourages “sharky face.” Pro tip - watch for your puppy’s “tell” and see if there’s a signal they give to indicate they’re about to get bitey.

It’s our job as pet parents to make sure puppies have an ample amount of appropriate chews and toys. If it helps, rotate them weekly to minimize boredom. Whenever your puppy tries to go after you, offer them something better. Likewise, try giving them their meals in supervised, interactive puzzles. This gives the puppy something else to do with those sharp puppy teeth and might make them a bit more tired for a little bit.

Lastly, if the puppy is absolutely relentless over using you as a chew toy, the crate or puppy pen can be used as a simple timeout. This should never be done in anger or as a punishment. We simply show the puppy to the crate, possibly with an appropriate chew, and release them after a couple minutes.

Save this post for the next time your puppy gets nippy.

New experiences can go two ways - fun or scary. Of course, fun is preferred, but if we don’t prepare our dogs, scary might prevail.

This is commonly thought about with puppies as socialization, but we often don’t think about it with adult dogs. Here is just a short list of things every adult dog should be conditioned to, even if the only reason would be for an emergency:

- muzzle
- crate
- gloves
- masks
- needles/pokes
- different flooring
- handling body parts
- cone of shame

Any of these could occur during an emergency. If your dog is already stressed, then adding five more stressors is a recipe for disaster.
