Monocacy Equine Veterinary Associates Monocacy Equine is an ambulatory equine practice that offers a variety of services and ER coverage.
(4)

Monocacy Equine Veterinary Associates was started in 1983 as a one-person ambulatory practice by Dr. Richard Forfa. It has since expanded to include a clinic facility with an isolation stall, a laboratory, breeding lab, and podiatry shed. MEVA is the only equine practice in west-central Maryland with the clinic facilities to offer 24hr care for fluid therapy, wound management, eye care, and more.

We also stand and collect stallions, breed mares with frozen and cooled semen, and provide foaling services. Our on-site laboratory also allows for blood results in less than thirty minutes when we need answers fast! We have doctors on call, round the clock, everyday of the year.

Monocacy Equine would like to welcome Dr. Manrique Miranda to the practice. Dr. Miranda is a native of Costa Rica, but lived most of his life in North Carolina. He was introduced to the veterinary field while working at a horse barn in N.C. and later completed his Bachelor's and Doctor of Veterinary Medicine degrees at NC State University. During his time in vet school, Dr. Miranda was co-coordinator of the Foal Team, providing after-hours care to critical foal patients, worked in the Large Animal Hospital caring for and treating hospitalized patients, and was an anatomy teaching assistant, helping first year vet students prepare for their assessments. During his clinical year, he won the ACVIM Clinical Excellence in Internal Medicine Award. Dr. Miranda then completed an equine focused internship near Greensboro, NC. There, he developed interest in internal medicine, neonatology, and lameness. Outside of the veterinary field, he enjoys soccer, getting outside with his Siberian Husky, Juno, the Oxford Comma and the occasional chess match with his wife, Asmae.

As many of you may know I grew up in Asheville, NC. Riding along with a now retired large animal vet all over the rural mountain counties as a high schooler. I have a deep love of the place and family and friends still there. A lot of people are looking for ways to donate. Below is the link to donate to the North Carolina Veterinary Medical Association who is spearheading management of veterinary and animal care. They are working closely with the Department of Agriculture to restore veterinary care to WNC. When you donate make sure to check disaster relief. I am so thankful for all our wonderful clients wanting to be so supportive. Pictures of a mule string that has been extremely effective at reaching the hardest hit mountain hollows. - Dr. Bretz

Unfortunately our old AOL mail account has been compromised. This email will also be deactivated soon so please do not use it as a primary point of contact anymore. The correct email address should end in monocacyequine . com. We have been working to deter people away from the AOL account for about a year now. Please do not attempt to open a party invitation from us. Thank you. (All work, no parties).

The office will be closed for the 4th and 5th for Independence day. A veterinarian will be on call for any emergencies. Thank you and enjoy the long weekend!

Sadly last week was our final week with the amazing Dr. Julia Miller. We wish her well as she heads off in new directions. We all feel so fortunate to have had her help this spring and if relocation had been in the cards for her we would've kept her forever. So a sincere thanks to her for all her help this spring.

Exciting news on how we are growing coming later this summer!! In the meantime we are back to 3 of us and working hard to get everyone's needs met. We thank all you for your patience and flexibility as we work hard to serve you in a timely fashion while also attending to emergencies.

As many of you may have seen Dr. Bretz is sporting a new to us vet truck. Why the change??? Well we needed another vehicle!

We are lucky this spring to be able to have Dr. Julia Miller work with us part time. She is working in a long term relief position. A relief veterinarian is an important part of our industry. They help fill the gap when a veterinarian is sick, injured, on vacation, or additional help is just needed. This spring we thought we might need some additional hands and Dr. Miller was available. At Monocacy Equine we strive to maintain availability and quick response to emergencies. We work to grow our staff as quickly as we grow our client base. As many horse owners are aware of the process of hiring a full time equine veterinarian these days is difficult and there just aren't many to be had. We are so thankful to have Dr. Miller to help us and thankful for all the new clients and patients we have been able to welcome into our practice.

Now a bit more about Dr. Miller

Dr. Julia Miller grew up in south-eastern Pennsylvania where her love of the horse grew from an early age riding, training and showing both hunter/jumper and western pleasure horses. She earned her B.S. from Delaware Valley University in 2009, participated on the IHSA teams throughout her college years and worked at New Bolton Center as a patient care assistant prior to vet school. Dr. Miller graduated from the University of Pennsylvania’s Veterinary School in 2013 and then completed an intense year-long internship in Washington State. Over the last 10 years she has worked in both Maryland and Pennsylvania as a primary care equine veterinarian. Dr. Miller’s professional interests include performance/sport horse evaluation and lameness, dentistry, routine preventative care, and acupuncture. In her free time, Dr. Miller enjoys riding her horse Madison, hiking with her husband and dogs and spending time in Maine.

Please join us in a warm welcome for Dr. Miller.

Zodiac would like to say thank you to everyone who has donated to his boat at Sailing Through The Winter Solstice. Fourteen years ago he was brought to Days End Farm Horse Rescue Days when animal control officers found him and many other horses in critical condition at a farm in West Virginia. It took quite a few weeks to stabilize him but he survived, thanks to the wonderful care he received. Fundraising isn't always "fun" but it is rewarding, especially when helping horses. If you wish to contribute please click the link and vote for Zodiac's boat. https://secure.acceptiva.com/?cst=b30f23

Zodiac the horse is a lucky guy. In 2010 he came to Days End Farm Horse Rescue in critical condition and spent 19 days in a sling before he was able to stand on his own. He was suffering from severe neglect, was extremely underweight and had several life threatening conditions. He's now living at a wonderful farm and asks you to vote for his boat at Sailing Through The Winter Solstice to raise money for Days End Farm. Please click the link. https://secure.acceptiva.com/?cst=b30f23. Thank you!

It's Throwback Thursday and so we're going back to 1989 to tell you a little bit about how Days End Farm Horse Rescue got started. They have grown from taking in that 1st horse to caring for up to 90 horses per year and Monocacy Equine Veterinary Associates has been their veterinarian during the entire time. Please vote for our boat at Sailing Through The Winter Solstice named Zodiac after one of their most well known rescue horses. Your vote money goes to help more horses at Days End Farm Horse Rescue.
