Winter is coming and we get asked often about using the Porta-Grazers outside in the snow/rain etc
YES :) All models are designed to be used anywhere, inside or outside.. They are rated to neg 30 degrees and have 15 yr UV inhibitors. All models have a drain plug which lets any rain drain out. In snow leave it untied so the horses can tip it over to knock the snow out. They will stand it back up to graze.

Here at Porta-Grazer we believe in providing your horse free choice forage.... The Porta-Grazer gives your horse the ability to size and tear each bite in a head down position same as if they were grazing on pasture... We hear "My horse will get fat" however if you regulate the calories in what you are feeding- not the volume..your horse can maintain its proper weight without having to do without the volume it needs.

Can horses share a Porta-Grazer?

When feeding in a herd setting each horse needs its own feeder. If there is only one feeder available the dominate horse will take it. Spread them out so no horse can "guard" the feeders preventing the lesser horse from eating. (Green feeders in pic are prototypes of the corner model)

Wont my horse get fat if I free feed?

Not if you feed a low calorie type forage. When free feeding you do not regulate the volume... Horses are designed to have forage 24/7 to buffer the stomach acid that runs 24/7. You want to regulate the calories IN the hay that you feed. Regulating the calories is how you control weight. Each horse has different calorie needs. Meet those needs by the type of hay you feed. A low calorie grass hay is better for the horses digestive system than to feed 2 or 3 meals of high calorie hay where the horse goes long stretches with nothing in in its gut.

How do I get the pan out?
There is a keyhole in the side of the pan.. point it at the handle with the arrow on it. IN case of the Corner model just point it at the one handle..

Feeding pellets may be required for some horses. Perhaps they can't have hay for whatever reason. Dental, age, quidding etc. However when most horses are given a feeder full of pellets they tend to take large mouthfuls. Which can lead to poorly chewed pellets lacking enough saliva. This can lead to choke or impaction colic.
The Porta-Grazer offers a pellet pan which is designed to pick up only a few pellets at a time so the horse is able to get smaller mouthful. It has 10 smaller holes that lift up a few pellets at a time when the horse rotates pan. This allows the horse to spend more time chewing, properly lubricating the pellets with saliva before swallowing which helps prevent impaction colic . The pellet pan is not available in the corner model.

Which pan should I use if I feed mixed hay?
When feeding a mix of coarse and fine type hay you will need the pan with the least hole count.. In the XL this would be the 6 hole, in the Corner model use the 8 hole..(Same hole diameter as XL - just more surface space since the feeder is larger) This allows you to feed any type of hay, any combination of hay, off any size bale. You can also soak hay with this pan.
