Tis the Season....PYTHIUM SEASON!
With the wet summer and now the storms and rain on the East Coast, I am seeing a big surge in Pythium cases. I've tested over 150 samples in the last 2 weeks and 75% have been positive for Pythium, Lagenidium or Paralagenidium. Check your pets and horses every day for lesions or intestinal issues (vomiting/diarrhea).

I participated in a Pod Cast Monday evening, something new for me. The Podcast is for people with hunting dogs, especially hounds that track and tree various wild animals raccoons, Bobcats, Mountain Lions and such. The topic of the this show was Chagas Disease in dogs and all dogs are susceptible. This is a disease for which I do a lot of lab work both testing for diagnosing infection and research to develop improved diagnostic techniques. This disease is now well established in Texas and I think will continue to spread to many other states. If you are interested, check the link below. It is about an hour and a half conversation with lots of pertinent information.

PAVL is leading the effort to develop diagnostic services for Pythiosis in Horses, Dogs and other species. Veterinarians have used our Pythium blood test to diagnose Pythiosis in more than 10,000 cases. PAVL is the only lab in the world that offers blood test diagnostic services for Pythiosis and the closely related diseases Lagenidiosis and Paralagendiosis. We also offer PCR for specific organism identification for Pythium and Lagenidium from kunker and tissue samples.

PAVL’s BunnyVac Pasteurella vaccine is the only USDA approved vaccine for use in rabbits.
