Bathing and grooming can be extremely stressful for dogs that are unfamiliar with the processes involved. One of the ways you can help make your dog more comfortable is with the use of a lick-mat. There are several varieties available, but ideal choose one that has suction cups to help them stick to a surface!
STEP 1:
Get your dog used to licking off the mat. Start with room temperature peanut butter and set it up for them in a room they feel comfortable in. Generally, mats will stick to plastic and glass surfaces. We’ve used them everywhere, from the dishwasher, to windows, and on the inside of plastic crates. Once they’re seeking the mat with gusto, up the ante by freezing the peanut butter on the mat.
STEP 2:
Move the peanut butter covered mat around to different rooms and locations (not the bathroom yet!).
STEP 3:
Now we’ll add the bathroom! Place the mat in the tub or shower. Once again, use room temperature peanut butter at first. Allow your dog to lick the mat clean and then go about you day.
STEP 4:
Place the mat in the tub or shower and, while your dog is licking it, turn on the water. Make sure the water does not touch them. Also do the same thing with the dryer at this time.
STEP 5:
Once your dog seem comfortable with the running water (and dryer sounds) next to them, you can begin to integrating bathing! Start easy, with small locations on your pups body that are easy to hand dry if the process becomes to stressful.
STEP 6:
Use the mat to keep your dog engage while you bathe (and dry) them!

Let's Talk About Enrichment!
Enrichment is a rather broad category that can encompass many different activities that involve working any number canine natural skills and abilities.
In this video, Llyr is worked on a flirt pole to give him an appropriate outlet for his chase drive! It's very natural for dogs to want to chase, catch, and tumble in their interactions. Llyr is encourage to chase, and occasionally to catch, the object at the end of a long pole. As with all physical activity, precautions should be taken to avoid injury - flirt pole interaction should not continue beyond 5-10 minutes at a time.
Training can also be a great source of enrichment! Join us in our upcoming classes to get started! bit.ly/roguesform

Licky mats can be great tools for husbandry challenges too. They can make bathing and the delivery of medication much easier because your dog is actively engaged in a positive activity.
Because dogs are silly, and usually have more fun with snow then we do. Enjoy your Thursday!
