Did you know July 5th is one of the busiest days of the year at animal shelters? Terrified dogs bolt out of their yards, slip out of their collars, or yank the leash out of your hands as fireworks boom overhead. It's time to get prepared for the 4th of July! Start working on creating positive associations to the sounds of fireworks now. Play videos of fireworks at low volume. Start the sound, then give your dog a chew or toss some kibble and treats around the floor for your dog to search for. Day by day gradually increase the volume. While this is a big help, nothing can replicate the physical feel of fireworks booming. We like to play action movies to help mask the sound. Talk to your vet today if your dog will benefit from medication.

I just want to shout out our community. I was out at BearWaters Brewing in Canton tonight. There was a pair of Jack Russells, a pair of Dalmatians, a Swiss Mountain dog, a Border Collie, a black lab, a pair of Golden Retrievers and a few miscellaneous mutts like mine. Everyone was minding their business and all the dogs were minding their owners and it was great to see!

It's important to match the level of distraction to the level of reward when treat training. If the value of the reward is too high, the dog may have difficulty listening to you (too focused on the bacon). And if the value is too low, they'll have no motivation to listen to you.
