Animal Relief Coalition of Iowa The Animal Relief Coalition of Iowa is a state licensed and 501(c)(3) Public Charity dedicated to providing rescue, rehab and rehome services.

After significant growth and outreach in Iowa, ARC of Iowa is not only a new name, but now a PUBLIC charity serving all of Iowa. Formerly the Raccoon Valley Animal Sanctuary & Rescue, founded in 1998, our purpose and mission have also grown which enables us to help more people and their pets stay together, rather than be surrendered into shelters. ARC of Iowa will continue to network with other sh

elters and rescues, and work individually with pet owners on all levels of animal welfare services, including assistance, behavior modification with their pets, and even helping them pick out the right companion for life!

With the high winds followed by snow and cold, tonight into tomorrow morning there is a high risk to baby tree squirrels and great-horned owlets, both of which are currently in their nests. With forecasted winds, we expect trees to break and the winds to blow whole nests down, knocking babies to the ground and putting them at risk for injury, hypothermia, and death.

WHAT SHOULD YOU DO?

Please note that hypothermic baby squirrels may be motionless and appear dead, but once they are warmed, they will begin moving again.

Place the box on a heating pad set on low or put a hot water bottle wrapped in a t-shirt in the box (refreshing the hot water bottle ever 1-2 hours as it cools). Our Wildlife Center at 9777 M Street in Omaha is open from 11AM to 7PM daily and you can walk-in during those hours. Due to the high risk of injuries, frostbite, and hypothermia, weโ€™d like all babies from this storm to come to NWR first. Once stabilized, the great-horned owlets will be transferred to Raptor Conservation Alliance (RCA). If baby squirrels are uninjured and are candidates for reunification with their mothers, we will work with you to get them home again. We will also have staff on-hand Wednesday to help facilitate reunifications.

Migration is beginning and injuries to adult birds are very common when winds are this high. Please keep an eye out for grounded and injured birds. If you can catch them, please bring them to NWR at the address above. If you have any questions, just reach out!

It takes all of us to help wildlife when storms like these strike. Thank you for your caring about Nebraskaโ€™s native wildlife!

TANGO UPDATE:

Her heart murmur was a level 2 (out of 6). She lost about .26 ounces since February so we are watching that closely.

Weight: 5.47 lbs a loss of .26 ounces since February.

Her respiratory rate was slightly elevated to about 60 but she's been holding at home to around 30, so we are hoping she was just stressed out.

We did decide to draw blood which will check on her thyroid levels, kidney's, white/red blood counts and electrolytes. We will have those results in about 2 days.

Tango's care is palliative meaning we will continue to monitor her health and provide comfort care, with minimal tests and procedures , like blood draws, fluids and meds to keep her comfortable.

Hospice care follows with managing her pain until such time we have to say goodbye!

Cats hide pain, so we can only go by her appetite, demeanor overall and food/water intake. So far, she's hanging in there....

RESCUE UPDATE:

The hardest thing about rescue is saying goodbye.

We have three cats that are nearing their final days.

All three feral strays, had dedicated caregivers who have funded and cared for them for over a decade, but now they need a little help as their health has declined and they are entering what we call palliative care.

We are asking for you to help us, help them care for these precious souls for the remainder of their days.

You can help support them in their final days by contributing monetarily at [email protected] (Paypal) or through a contribution of much needed supplies, specifically food and litter!

CHEWY:

Thank in you advance for your kindness.
