One Starfish Rehoming Connections We are a non-profit organization offering networking and hands-on assistance to dog owners and potent

We are a very small rescue organization, but we have a BIG heart--especially when it comes to elderly and special medical needs dogs! We pride ourselves on our high ethical standards and honesty and we
value our reputation in the rescue/shelter community as well as with our growing family of adopters. Our commitment to the animals has always been--and will continue to be--our guiding light. Our r

escue and sanctuary/hospice dogs are our "children", and they live with us in our home. All the work is done by just the two of us (Marti and Jim). We have no "staff" or outside volunteers, and we spend 24 hours a day--and every extra penny of our own money--to keep our dogs healthy and happy. At any one time we have between five and eight rescue dogs available for adoption, plus fifteen or more special medical needs dogs living with us in our Sugarcandy Mountain Sanctuary. We feed all of our dogs the best quality food and they receive excellent vet care--including regular check ups, dentals, bloodwork, specialty surgeries, traditional medications (and even herbal supplements, Chinese herbs, and acupuncture!). We do not receive any government assistance, subsidies, or funding from any other sources. Our food and vet bills run between $3000 and $5000 each month, but our monthly donations--at this point in time--total just a few hundred dollars. Clearly, to be self-sustaining, One Starfish needs your financial support!

❗️ MISSY NEEDS HELP❗️
Friends, I have an urgent and pressing situation. This is Missy who, together with a few old dogs that needed care, I didn’t take to the boarding facility but brought into my own home to nurse them. Despite my illness, I simply couldn’t bring myself to take her to a boarding facility...
In recent weeks Missy has had difficulty moving, she’s not herself, but this morning her legs gave out completely. She’s probably in pain because she cries with every slightest movement. She’s also showing me her eye which is bulging and she won’t let me touch her.
Of course, without delay we rushed to the vet. Some blood tests were done, but Missy stayed at the clinic for further examination.
I wonder, why Missy? She always greeted me with joy, whether it was -15 or +40 degrees, she was happy to see me and patiently accepted the conditions in the shelter. She never showed me how lonely and sad she was... In all these years, a home was never found for her.. Neither she nor anyone deserves to suffer... I’m broken and I can’t bear her pain and helplessness...
Now that she was taken care of in a warm bed and was supposed to enjoy herself, the shelter has taken its toll... Missy is not well... Many tests need to be done and I need your help. I’m asking again 🙏 Let’s help Missy get back on her feet, to be that same old cheerful granny again.

Several days ago, Rachel Stock--a kind hearted lady in our community—posted a plea for help. A very thin stray cat had been wandering around in her neighborhood and she noticed that he had recently incurred a serious eye injury. Rachel felt sorry for him, but she wasn’t sure what she could do to help. When our special needs (dog!) rescue saw Rachel’s post, we offered to loan her a large live animal trap in hopes of catching up the kitty. (At that point, we didn’t really have a longer term plan, but our first order of business was to trap him!)
Fortunately, Rachel caught him early that next morning and she called me right away. This poor kitty’s eye was damaged beyond repair and it was infected as well. We couldn’t let him suffer (and we were pretty sure a shelter would just put him to sleep) so we agreed to take him to our veterinarian in Lodi. Of course, the vet wouldn’t handle him until he had had a rabies shot, was treated for fleas, etc. etc. One thing led to another, and we ended up agreeing to have the surgical procedure done. (There was no “saving” his eye; it was totally ruptured.) And, while he was under anesthetic, they neutered and microchipped him for us.
Well, long story short….The kitty is now home with us and is recovering well. We have a good friend (Carol) who does cat rescue and she has agreed to take “Shadow” once his eye heals.
So now…...the “only” problem is the vet bill, which came to just over $2000!
We are hoping that those of you who have followed this story might find it in your heart to PM us and donate whatever you can to help us pay the vet bill. As you know, we are a very tiny rescue so we didn’t have any “reserve” in our piggy bank for an emergency like this. (But that being said, since we are a 501c3, so any donation you make would be tax deductible.)
We plan to start a GoFundMe soon. But fundraisers like this don’t disburse funds for several months, and we are desperately broke right now!
We can send you a photo of the kitty's injured eye (but it's kind of gruesome) and also a copy of our vet bill is you're interested.
Thank you so much!

There is lots of talk about the Merck Nobivac NXT Rabies vaccine. They say it’s an RNA particle vaccine and should be avoided at all costs.

Please be sure to discuss this with your vet prior to having your pet immunized for Rabies.

There has been an important recall notification related to the rabies vaccine. Boehringer Ingelheim (BI), a leading manufacturer of rabies vaccines has issued a recall on the specific batch of rabies vaccine because the manufacturing company inadvertently labeled a small number of sterile water vials as a rabies vaccine.
All vets were supposed to have contacted the clients whose pets might have received this vaccine.)
Have you recently had your dog vaccinated for rabies? And do you know for sure that it wasn't one of these "dud" vaccine? (We just received a notce that two of our dogs received should come back for a re-vaccination (at no charge), and I'm not a happy camper.)

Also…..Boehringer Ingelheim (BI), a leading manufacturer of rabies vaccines has issued a recall on the specific batch of rabies vaccine.
The manufacturing company inadvertently labeled a small number of sterile water vials as a rabies vaccine. This diluent (sterile water) is not harmful to pets.
However, it also—clearly—is not effective in preventing rabies infection.
If your dog has received a rabies vaccine in the last couple of months, please check with your vet to be sure that it wasn’t one of the vaccines that has been recalled (or that it wasn't one of the Merck Nobivac NXT vaccines.)

A couple of weeks ago we posted, looking for an adopter for Shadow, a sweet little kitten who was found abandoned by the side of the road on a cold, winter night.
If we are able to find the right adopter for Shadow, we would be willing to pay for all of her vetting and would even waive her adoption fee.
We admit that there are SO many cats and kittens out there who need homes, so we are trying to entice a qualified adopter to adopt Shadow and give her a loving, forever home.
Please spread the word by sharing this post.
(Anyone who is interested should private message Marti Houge Thanks so much!

We've worked hard over the last couple of months, creating a promotional video for Bolt (who came to us from Amman, Jordan). It's a little long (5 minutes) but we couldn't figure out how to make it any shorter.

At any rate, we finally finished it and wanted to share it with you in hopes that you can help us find just the right home for Bolt. (We are also posting this on my personal FB page since the post can't be shared from HERE, but it can be shared from my personal page.)

Please help us spread the word, and share this video. (We are in the throes of trying to help our rescue partner Viki in Macedonia (perhaps by taking in one or two of her dogs) but first we have to find a home for Bolt.)

Bolt has recovered from his injury and he finally is available for adoption!
