One Starfish Rehoming Connections We are a non-profit organization offering networking and hands-on assistance to dog owners and potent
(14)

We are a very small rescue organization, but we have a BIG heart--especially when it comes to elderly and special medical needs dogs! We pride ourselves on our high ethical standards and honesty and we
value our reputation in the rescue/shelter community as well as with our growing family of adopters. Our commitment to the animals has always been--and will continue to be--our guiding light. Our r

escue and sanctuary/hospice dogs are our "children", and they live with us in our home. All the work is done by just the two of us (Marti and Jim). We have no "staff" or outside volunteers, and we spend 24 hours a day--and every extra penny of our own money--to keep our dogs healthy and happy. At any one time we have between five and eight rescue dogs available for adoption, plus fifteen or more special medical needs dogs living with us in our Sugarcandy Mountain Sanctuary. We feed all of our dogs the best quality food and they receive excellent vet care--including regular check ups, dentals, bloodwork, specialty surgeries, traditional medications (and even herbal supplements, Chinese herbs, and acupuncture!). We do not receive any government assistance, subsidies, or funding from any other sources. Our food and vet bills run between $3000 and $5000 each month, but our monthly donations--at this point in time--total just a few hundred dollars. Clearly, to be self-sustaining, One Starfish needs your financial support!

WE did it! Yesterday morning we loaded over a ton of shelter supplies (cages, crates, bowls, food, beds, etc. etc.) into the truck that Sammi had just driven all the way up from West Virginia. It took three and a half hours for the six of us to clear out two storage lockers that we had rented, before Sammi Cozart (sitting in the middle) left to pick up even MORE donations that Pamela Ann Marsh (another rescue friend living in a suburb of Chicago) had collected for various shelters and rescues in West Virginia.
As I type this, Sammi is on her way back to Taunya LaDawn Williams' rescue in Beckley West Virginia--where the work on THEIR end begins... First to unload the truck into Taunya's storage locker (and return the rented truck), Then (later this week) they will host a pick-up day where a number of surrounding shelters and rescues will come to pick and choose the supplies they need for their own struggling facilities.
A SPECIAL thank-you goes to our adopters Penny and Ross DePaola and Sam Robinson (all shown in the photo above) who graciously donated several hours of their time on Saturday morning to help us organize, re-package, label, and load all these supplies!
I modestly say that we truly are a dream team....
We thank EVERYONE who donated, drove, helped us load, or even just gave us moral support. We couldn't have done this without you!

I'm at my wit's end.....My rescue friend Elizabeth (who lives in the area of Texas that has experienced massive flooding for the past month) has still not found any charity or organization to help the pets who have been abandoned and are starving. On her behalf, I have contacted every single group that people have suggested, and NO ONE is helping these animals. (The closest help I could find was 2-1/2 hours away--in Houston. Greater Good has donated food available there, but many of the people in this flooded area have lost their cars to the flooding. And neither my friend nor I can find anyone--with a truck or van--who can drive to Houston to pick food up for them. She tells me people are moving out and leaving their pets behind, and she doesn't even have enough food for her own rescue dogs. She has started to feed them rice because it's all she has.
This makes me so angry. We see all the "feel-good" commercials on TV where HSUS and the ASPCA are helping pets in need, but....they are not willing to help THESE animals, and there are now hundreds of dogs and cats who are drowning and starving.
I started a fundraiser about a month ago, but only collected a few hundred dollars--which has all already been spent on pet food.

I have also personally sent several hundred additional dollars (out of my own pocket) to help Elizabeth's neighbors and friends and to distribute to needy pet owners and starving abandoned pets in her area. But there is nothing more I can do and I need someone to make this effort go VIRAL.
I don't have the "connections" needed, but I am thinking that SOMEONE here can come up with an idea. Do you have connections with a company whose owner would like to make a big charitable donation to help these animals? (It would be good advertising for them.)
PLEASE help me out here. I can't sleep at night worrying about these animals.

I've heard of rescues and shelters receiving pallets of donated dog and cat food but never paid much attention to how they came to be receiving this food. We are still frantically trying to collect up dog/cat food for the pets in the flooded areas of Texas north of Houston, and wondered if you had any idea who we might contact.

This doesn't have to do with Wisconsin animals, but...I need advice. One of our supporters lives in Kirbyville, Texas which is experiencing terrible flooding. She runs a small rescue herself and has friends who have pets, and so far there has been NO help forthcoming for her animals. Red Cross is there (and FEMA will be stepping in shortly, I'm sure) but she says no one is helping the animals...
I went to the USUS website and called the number they provided, but I ended up talking to someone in China(?) who didn't speak good enough English that I could understand her.

PLEASE....can someone suggest what can be done to help the animals in Texas? (My friend just found a dead cat floating down the street....and she is beside herself, worrying about the animals in her area.)

A few folks have contacted me about the dog who is paralyzed in the rear legs--expressing shock and concern that a shelter would turn her out on the streets if they can't find an adopter for her, so let me explain....
The shelter who took her in (and has her at this time) is in Nepal, and laws and animal care standards are very different in poor countries. This rescue did the best they could--by vetting the dog--but they can't keep her indefinitely because there are other starving, injured dogs that they have to help and their finances are limited.

This being said, the pet overpopulation is so problematic in this country right now that many shelters down south are telling people--who have found a stray dog--to take it back and turn it loose in the area where they found it! So, things aren't MUCH better in the US right now--thanks to lack of spay/neuter laws as well as not enforcing the laws that are already on the books. It's very sad.

Does any rescue or shelter out there need colorful bandanas (of various sizes) for their dogs' photo session?
We have a variety of different bandanas that we don't need and are looking to give them away if someone wants them.

Please e-mail me at: [email protected] if you need some cute bandanas for your dogs!

This is an emergency, and we need to have you share our plea far and wide!!!!

As a stray puppy, this little sweet dog was hit by a car and her back legs were paralyzed. Amazingly, she survived living on the streets for four years before being taken in by a rescue. The temporary rescue who has taken her in has spayed and immunized her but the foster family is no longer able to keep her. So if an adopter isn’t found in the next few weeks, she will have to be turned out onto the streets again to fend for herself! She is a very gentle 30 lb. dog who is good with people as well as other dogs and cats. She is perfectly healthy other than being paralyzed in the rear legs. She would benefit from a wheelchair so that she could run around outside, but she also does well in the house. She needs to have her bladder manually expressed (onto a p*e pad) two or three times a day but this is actually very easy to do and actually—in inclement weather—it’s more convenient than going outside. We are desperately searching for an adopter for this sweet dog. She has been through so much and having to have her turned back onto the street again would be a tragedy.

Please share her story—and this video—with your FB friends and on any groups whose members might be able to give her the happy life she deserves.

I can't believe how bad things have gotten...One of my rescue friends just posted a couple of Amish puppy mill releases. One farm has two Shih Tzus they want to 'get rid of' and the other farm has four Maltese and a Cavalier King Charles Spaniel.

I guess it's a good sign that things aren't going well for the Amish breeders, but....these dogs will be SHOT if not taken in by a rescue in the next day or two.

Back in "the day", these dogs would have been snapped up by a rescue in a second--and adopted out (after vetting) before even being posted on Petfinder.

Now, the rescues are all full, no one is adopting, and dogs like this are being shot.

What a tragedy. :-(

As a few of you may know, our good friend Tatyana is in Macedonia (visiting our rescue partner Viki) and will be returning to the US next week. She has the opportunity to bring Bertha (in the photo above) back with her so that we can find a loving adopter for her. The problem is, we need a responsible family (or individual) to temporarily foster Bertha for us. Our rescue will provide all the food and supplies, so all we need is someone to provide a safe place for Bertha to land. She is very sweet and good with other dogs, and would enjoy a large safely fenced yard and someone who is home at least part of the day. If we can't line up a foster before this weekend, Tatyana will have to leave Bertha behind, missing out on a rare opportunity to be adopted by someone here in the US. PLEASE help us.

Berta" is one of Viki's dogs in Macedonia. Viki found her as a small puppy and now she is about 6 months old. IF we can find someone to foster this sweetheart, she will be able to come into our rescue when Tatyana returns from Macedonia in March. Foster homes are so hard to find, but we're hoping for a miracle. Viki's shelter is overflowing with dogs, and we are trying to help by taking Berta into our rescue, but we can't do it without someone to foster her. Please spread the word.
(Igor adds: These dogs are found only on Macedonia and the neighboring countries and they are usually darker—mostly gray or dark gray
This lighter, almost white color is not to be found often in those dogs. This will be a very, very, very beautiful dog.)

We have been offered a large number of pillows and we are looking for someone who could put them to good use. They are regular size good quality "people pillows" that have been gently used but they have been thoroughly cleaned.
Any ideas?
