🥰Our 3 furry musketeers taking in some morning light & birdsong.
😺Byron & Foxxy-Freyja haven't always gotten along, but since the day we brought him home, our only goal was neutrality. If we got more & they became "friends" great, but I know Foxxy-Freyja is not a huge fan of most dogs. (And that's normal).
🐶Since puppyhood, Byron wanted to be her buddy, but he was pushy, in her face & would try to chase if she panicked (her 1st instinct was always to run.)
☯️We've created a safe, learning space. One where Byron learns that certain signals/ body language from Foxxy-Freyja means she wants space. Sure, we could've let nature take it's course, hoping him getting scratched in the face would be all it would take, but there are multiple problems with that method:
1️⃣Foxxy-Freyja would no longer feel safe & protected in her own home by the Guardians (us) who she has come to trust.
2️⃣For a BMD, Byron has a solid prey drive & barring losing an eye, which we don't want-he wouldn't stop. In fact, without further intervention, his behavior would've escalated, causing further issues for them both.
🏡
WE humans/Guardians are responsible for each & every animal we bring into our home. That means WE are responsible for being the adult/parent & TEACHING the "kids" how to get along-at the very least-how to live together in peace and harmony.
😻Byron is now 16 mths old and for quite some time, every morning he gives Foxxy a morning nose bump/kiss until she says she's had enough. I'm always there to intervene or remind him & he gets a food reward for listening to Foxxy-Freyja's requests for space.
❓️Are you advocating for ALL of your furry companions?

🤷🏼♀️I choose Honesty over being Impressive...
🐕🐩But...sometimes you can be both!
🤗
I'm so proud of these pups & their Guardians. Although our 1st group PAWS & TAILS class was small (I only allow 6 client dogs per class,) it was the perfect size & our location was extremely busy (it never used to be this busy.) So, we stuck to the edges at first to help everyone acclimate/decompress.
🐶
@wandatherescuepup started with me about 3 years ago. Her Guardians did the responsible thing & signed up for training the second they saw they could use a guiding hand. Poor Wanda had been bumped around with her siblings from a very young age (during that #criticalsocializationperiod ), & they found her at a rescue. She was a ball of relentless energy & love, but her reactivity threshold was so low that even a dog a block away could set her into a spin/highly reactive state, which made those walks a true challenge in the city. She also has a lot of food & environmental allergies & hip issues that were contributing discomfort, keeping her threshold & tolerance for anything new quite low.
However, she loves to 'work' and please her people, so we addressed all of that & used her strengths to help her be her best self.
🎉
Her Guardians stuck to the training, give her what SHE needs to be her best self (i.e. non-allergenic diet, daily physical & mental stimulation, downtime to do nothing, guidance as needed, structure, boundaries and of course loving her for who she is.) They continue to attend our P&T because the 'training never ends & as I learn new things, I share them with clients. The learning never truly ends for us or our dogs!
🐩
Akamaru AKA Aki, & his Guardians also did an amazing job! They contacted me as soon as they thought of getting a new puppy (it was months before they found Aki.) So, we were able to start building a foundation from Day 1. Unfortunately, due to some genetics & a couple of unfortunate experiences, he began to display #fearaggre
📸Snippet from Riley's session yesterday.
She did amazing considering it was a 40-minute ride, a new place, a school behind the grassy area, & other dogs, people & cars going by.
👍🏼👍🏼
She was still too stressed to eat, even though this girl loves her food. So, we used her drive to build confidence.
🤔
Knowing HOW to help your dog through certain situations is way beyond obedience training.
🥰
It's looking at that dog WHOLISTICALLY!
It's looking at their physical, emotional & mental well-being to get to the root of the issues. That comes with nutrition, exercise, healthy enrichment, knowing where the dog should be optimally based on breed/mix, age, health, temperament.
🐾
They ALL have different needs!

🤪Younger siblings... who is the true instigator here?
Can you tell who is still an adolescent in the video?
🎥Cooper (3lb. Chihuahua) is 2 1/2 yrs. old, Byron is 14 months.
📸
In the picture, Snickers (left), & Twix (right) are getting along nicely. Twix is still learning her older sisters limits and her humans step in to advocate as needed.

Who's the instigator in your home?
Did you know it's not always who you think and they may even take turns?

Keeping your pet safe during the upcoming eclipse is important due to potential confusion and anxiety that can be caused by the unusual dimming of light. Here are some key points to keep your pets safe during the eclipse:
Keep them indoors: Keep your pets indoors during the eclipse to prevent confusion or anxiety caused by the sudden changes in light. Ensure they are in a comfortable, familiar environment with curtains drawn or blinds closed to minimize exposure to the unusual lighting conditions.
Provide distractions: To help alleviate any anxiety your pet may experience during the eclipse, provide distractions such as toys, treats, or engaging activities. Keeping them occupied can divert their attention away from the unusual event outside.
Monitor outdoor activities: If you need to take your pet outside during the eclipse, keep them on a leash and closely supervise them at all times. Pets may become disoriented or frightened by the changing light conditions, so it's essential to keep them under control to prevent them from running off or getting injured
.
Create a calm environment: Keep noise levels low and maintain a calm atmosphere inside your home during the eclipse. Loud noises or sudden movements could exacerbate your pet's anxiety, so try to create a peaceful environment to help them feel secure.
Watch for signs of distress: Monitor your pet closely for any signs of distress or discomfort during and after the eclipse. Signs may include pacing, panting, trembling, or attempts to hide. If you notice any signs of anxiety, comfort your pet and provide reassurance until the eclipse has passed and normal daylight returns.
By following these key points, you can help ensure your pet stays safe and comfortable during the unusual event of an eclipse.
😎Keeping your pet safe during the upcoming eclipse isn't just about how your pet will react, but there will be an influx of traffic & people in certain areas. Also, past eclipse have been known to cause confusion & strange behaviors from wildlife, insects & other species. Such as bees going into a frenzy before settling into their hive midday.
This is likely due to potential confusion and anxiety that can be caused by the unusual dimming of light. It can mess with their natural instinct to bed down as the sun goes down.
‼️
Here are some key points to keep your pets safe during the eclipse (especially if they're typically anxious or sensitive to changes:
✅️Keep them indoors: Keep your pets indoors during the eclipse to prevent confusion/anxiety caused by the sudden changes in light & insect behavior that could startle them. Ensure they are in a comfortable, familiar environment with curtains drawn or blinds closed to minimize exposure to the unusual lighting conditions. Those in the path are also expecting a immense influx of traffic and people that could put your pet at higher risk (if you live in a busy area.) So turn on the TV or a radio station your dog finds calming to cover excess noises.
✅️NO FIREWORKS! Let's celebrate this natural event without the added stress because fireworks are stressful for more than just pets.
✅️Provide distractions: To help alleviate any anxiety your pet may experience during the eclipse, provide distractions such as playing games, interactive toys, treats, or engaging activities. Keeping them occupied can divert their attention away from the unusual event & the excitement outside.
✅️Supervise necessary outings: If you need to take your pet outside during the eclipse, keep them on a leash and closely supervise them at all times. Pets may become nervous by the changes & influx of people, or startled by the insects acting strange. This is essential to keep them under control to prevent them from running
Do you ever just let your dog be a DOG?
🤗People often forget that most breeds (therefore mixed of those breeds,) were bred to perform certain JOBS (herding, hunting, tracking, pulling, etc.)
🐶
So many behavior issues (even those that stem from anxiety, lack of confidence & lack of proper socialization,) can be remedied by teaching your dog what their "job" is in that moment, as well as, giving them the necessary outlets to feel fulfilled as a DOG.
🦮
They don't have to be a Service Dog or Search & Rescue, in truth, most dogs are not the right candidates for those jobs. When I refer to giving your dog a "job" to clients, I mean teaching your dog what behavior is expected of them at any given moment.
➡️This could be a simple as teaching your dog to Sit when guests come, Down when cars are passing, walking loosely when the leash is on, etc.
‼️
It's equally as important to give them outlets for their specific DRIVES & NEEDS to truly feel fulfilled. Imagine how you would feel if you loved to draw. Every morning you wake and can't wait to get to the drawing board. There's an essential drive in you to complete your next masterpiece. Only you get up to find that your materials are gone.
You go to an art store and immediately feel that adrenaline and excitement arise when you look at the easel all set to go. You sit down and start drawing. The store owner & your partner start reprimanding you and ban you from the store.
How do you feel?
Incomplete?
Like something is missing?
🐶
I'm NOT suggesting you let your dog chase squirrels and other small prey, if they have a high prey drive. But simply punishing it isn't going to change how they feel deep inside. It will just cause confusion, frustration and a lack of true fulfillment.
🌟
I'm saying give them an outlet that combines fulfillment with structure, builds communication, proofs obedience training and strengthens the overall relationship.
➡️For high Prey Drive dogs, we like to use the flirt pol
😅Who Let The Dogs Out?
This could literally save your dog's life!
🤦🏼♀️
How many times have you tried to figure out who left the door open and let your dog escape?
🤔
Was it your partner, the kids, a ghost who wants to mess with you?
🫠
Ultimately, it doesn't matter if it keeps happening. Keeping your door closed is a form of managing or preventing your dog from running free whenever they please, but it doesn't TEACH them anything (other than to make running away more exciting.)
Honestly, we have made the doors to the outside even more exciting (like the forbidden fruit.) Our dogs know there's an exciting world beyond those closed doors, so why wouldn't they try to escape to "Disneyland" if the gates were wide open?
😔
Eventually, management will most likely fail, as I'm sure many of you have experienced. If you're lucky, they don't get hit by a car or don't go too far & get lost. Unfortunately, most are NOT that lucky. An open door can quickly lead to heartbreak, so take the time to TEACH your dog what to do when a door is left open.

🥰Snickers & Twix: Growing Together!
🤗
I'm always grateful for the opportunity to help a family grow together, instead of seeing a new furry family member tear them apart (emotionally.) I love being able to help guide new Pawrents & Guardians in introducing their new family members peacefully. Raising a new pup can be chaotic enough if you don't have the necessary guidance.
🐶
These pups are getting along nicely thanks to the consistent guidance of their Guardians & their ability to advocate for each dog's needs in the moment.
🎉🐾💜
I'm so proud of how much you have all grown!
